My top five questions I ask myself before choosing a knife

1) do I need it

2) do i like it

3) track record

4) who makes it

5) do I have something that fills that role

1. What are the top 3 types of of lock ups on the market?

2. What are the top 3 steels on the market?

3. What are the top 3 one hand deployment and closures on market(no matter what hand you use)?

4. Can my knife be used effectly for all three areas of carry.. EDC, Hunting, and Tactical if truly needed? Not some pretty knife you put on a shelf or case!

5. What are the 3 best warranty companies for knife makers if something happens to my knife?

If a knife can be the answer within all five of these questions I can trust the knife. If it reaches the top one or two positions in each question then it's a great knife.
Let's see, late to the game here, but
1 - What do you mean by top 3? Popular? Strongest? Not a huge concern of mine, as long as it is effective
2 - There are far more than 3 good steels. Of course if the steel doesn't have a good heat treatment, it hardly matters. For some uses like skinning or boning, some people prefer a steel that sharpens easily instead of having good wear resistance. Having a good steel that does the job with a decent heat treatment that fits the price might be better here.
3 - Again, why 'top 3' all the time? A knife can have a poor implementation of a popular method and just ruin the experience here. Then again, a knife doesn't need to have on handed open. Many excellent knives do not.
4 - I don't need a knife to do everything. I need a knife to do its intended purpose.

A knife can actually meet the first four criteria and be a bad knife.

1. Is it a Benchmade?
2. Can I afford it?
3. Is it a Benchmade?
4. Do I like it?
5. Is it a Benchmade?
6......

Great Abe Vigoda's ghost...

Makes me wonder if a checklist is involved to go take a leak.

  1. find a bathroom or suitable plant
  2. unzip pants
  3. pee
  4. shake
  5. zip back up
If excessively drunk...
  1. pee
I have a really interesting story from college when a floor mate peed into the large floor fan in our dorm room. Apparently, this looks like a urinal after many beers...

1) Does its steel have at least 3 letters in its name?
2) Does it have a cool name with words spelled awesomely cool like "Psyko Monkee" or "RebL Kleevah"?
3) Have I seen at least 10 pics of of people in their backyards holding it with the point towards themselves on IG?
4) Have Youtube reviewers taken it out of a box and opened it?
5) Is the blade really thick?

"Yes" on all five or I'm not buying the worthless piece of junk.

This is cool and one heck of a feat but Don't let it distract you from the fact that in 1966, Al Bundy scored four touchdowns in a single game while playing for the Polk High School Panthers in the 1966 City Championship game vs. Andrew Johnson High School, including the game winning touchdown in the final seconds against his old nemesis, Bubba "Spare Tire' Dixon

If I don't like the way it looks - Meh
If it uses plastic, surgical steel, or thumb studs - Meh
If the blade has holes in it that catch bits of chorizo if I cut off a slice - Meh
If I can't clamp the blade in my sharpener properly - Meh
If it's overpriced for what I think it's worth - Meh
If I can only find a fixed price, instead of a "You save" price - Meh
If I have to pay to much for shipping and taxes - Meh

Whatever is remaining after that is fair game
