Magnussen, have you had a chance to draw up the pattern for your final design on this? I was able to find a couple of blankets that I think will work well for mine. I'll get taht lanolin ordered up and get it treated too.

Did you treat the wool before or after you had it sewn up?

Thanks again,
SDS

+1 for a pattern

Well I have my first one finished. I still have a few tweaks to make on it but I like this a lot. I still need to treat it with lanolin but haven't ordered that up yet.

I handstitched it and I agree, it is a PITA. I used synthetic sinew and I kind of like the contrast with the green/grey material.

I was able to find a 55%wool, 45% blended fibers "european wool blanket" at a local army surplus store. They had some heavier blankets that I may go back to get but I wanted to try this with a less expensive material first. This blanket was 60" X 80" and cost me $15.

I am going to try it out in the woods on Sunday. I am heading out to the seasons first traditional archery shoot and the temps are supposed to be in the 40's. Should be a good test for this bush shirt.

Thank you for posting up this thread.

Sorry SDS...... I must have clicked the unsubscibe link to this thread.... I wasn't getting notifications since my last post.

I never got around to posting that pattern.... sorry I didn't hold true to my word.... I will have to post it later cause I'm getting ready to head up north tomorrow....

No sweat. I was able to cobble one together. I still have some things I will likely change on it but I think for just bumming around on a day hike it will suit me just fine for now.

Thanks for posting this thread up. I doubt I'd have done this if I hadn't seen yours.

Well I got to try out my bush shirt today. The weather warmed up to around 50 so by the time we were finished shooting I was getting pretty warm.

I was in south central Oklahoma and earlier this morning we went out for the season's first traditional archery shoot. The wind was light to moderate and the morning temps were around 40.

The shirt worked great. I wore an armguard so the sleeve length was not an issue. I liked the 3/4 length sleeves as they were long enough to keep me warm but not get in the way. I wore a long sleeve t-shirt and a fleece pullover under the bush shirt and I wsa plenty warm all morning.

I made the circumference a little too large so I will have to take it up a little. Overall I'm very happy with this and will likely either modify this one or build another one.

Thanks for posting this up Magnussen.

C'mon SDS, Where are the pictures?

My Italian surplus blankets just came in the mail. I have a pattern coming in the mail and then I am going to start my own WWA (Winter Wool Anorak.)

It would be helpful to see pictures of your work. Thanks in advance.

I had every intention of taking my camera today but I left the house at 5:00 this morning.........I'm just glad the camera was about the only thing I forgot. I'll try to get a picture of the shirt at least.

Sorry,
SDS

I understand SDS.

I would appreciate it if you could just post a few pictures of the anorak for reference.

How did you shoot today? I have my first 3d shoot coming up in a few weeks.

Here is mine. While I was looking it over for the pictures I noticed that the material was beginning to fray a little bit around the stitching. I think a machine stitched seam would hold up better. I will also add a small triangle of leather to the base of the neck opening to prevent the material from pulling apart there. I think by stitching the leather in place there it will help reinforce the material.

I made this one way too wide. I am going to reduce the girth by 2-3 inches on each side. I was trying to ake sure that this was big enough to wear other clothing under it. I accomplished that in spades.

Sorrry Valcas1, I forgot about the archery shoot. I shot better than I expected but I still have a long ways to go to get back to where I was. Still trying to nurse a bum shoulder back to full strength but it sure was fun to get out and bum around a bit. This shirt was great for the weather too. Rough enough that I didn't worry about getting hung up in any brush and comfortable.

Well.... I just got back from some Winter Survival training and the Anorak performed well. The other two guys on the course made their own Anoraks prior to leaving, too....

I'm the ray of sunshine on the left...

Hey Rick,

Good pictures!

You'll have to define what 'ray of sunshine' means to you. I'm having trouble trying to reconcile what the usual meaning is with what I see in that picture.

Tell me something, are anoraks to winter survival, what belts are to martial arts? And you all try to work your way towards the coveted gray anorak, that only Alan wears at the moment?

Any new goodies to share?

:DDoc:D

Perhaps I'm using "Ray of Sunshine" out of context here, Doc...... I'm afraid to know what it means to you.... lol. I was just poking fun at my "sour-face" expression that seems to be present in every photo of me.... ha ha....

Yes, I have much to learn before I can test for my "grey anorak".

Many new goodies to share, my friend......... mostly lessons in humility..... more to follow in another thread....

I SO want me one of these but I couldn't sew a button on anything, let alone make something like this.

I started poking around to see if I could find a commercial pattern but I need to find one big enough.

It looks AWESOME Rick!

Thanks for sharing!

Rick,

Off topic... How do you like the aviator mittens and are those the ones with the wool lining? I have been looking at them and they look real nice. Just wanted to get you opinion.

Thanks

Paul

Sorry to dig up an old thread but it's getting close to the cold season again.

I love this design but I have no skills. Has anyone seen a good commercial pattern available close to this wonderful design?

Rick, this is still awesome!

Thanks for bringing this back up. I'm hoping to put one of these together this year myself.

A couple of you have made mention to a waterproof outer layer.....

The anorak fits perfectly inside an army poncho so if it is a wet snow I can throw that overtop. I do like the Idea of an oiled canvas outer shell as it would breath a little better than the poncho.... I'll be thinking on that one for sure.

Very nice  I recently ordered a bulk shipment of Italian wool blankets and was considering make a capote but I might just go with an anorak after seeing yours. There's something about anoraks that just works.

The Conovers in Maine advocate Egyptian cotton shells over wool - they make anoraks and I think the idea is that the cotton anorak not only blocks wind but also acts like a bellows and pushes moist air out of the garment as you're moving around and perspiring. I think they have anorak plans in their book SnowWalker's Companion but beside their detail-stitching and pockets, it's just a basic anorak.

from: http://www.wintersnowtrails.org/winter_camping_2.htm

The Conovers also use the traditional cotton canvas anorak shell and pants favored by northern dwellers for many years before the introduction of nylon and other synthetic fabrics. Extremely durable, and very water/snow resistant, while being far more breathable than so-called “waterproof-breathable” materials, used as a shell over wool or fleece, they keep the winter traveler warm and dry.
