Quote from latest Speedway Scene ;

" A tougher Jeff Gordon? While he didn'tgo purse swinging,he did keep his helmet on when he pounded Kenseth in the chest with a two-palmed thrust. Picture the two of them squaring off for a boxing match. The Thriller Of Vanilla !"

Almost wet my knickers over this !

Safe racing !

Whooooeee ! Only 2 veteran drivers in the top 10 today. Martin is 3rd & Bobby Labonte 10th. Hopefully he can get the Petty bunch back on top. The Texas track'll take a pounding with all the big dogs trying to get off the porch & up front !

Safe racing !

Don't know where you've been Shogun, but this is where the mods have deemed racing threads appropriate.

Alan,
Maybe that's because all the Cup regulars are focusing on the Busch race. Might as well be 'Cup Lite'...first 5 places or so = Buschwackers...

Scot, any explaination for the way replies are displayed now ? It sure is hard to continue a dialog in this fashion.

Uncle Alan, I suspect you accidentally reset your options (or the Net Demons did it. Sometimes people's preferences get reset with no apparent cause. Is there really any such thing as Net Demons? They are said to hate unbelievers....)

Go to your User Control Panel, Edit Options, scroll down to Thread Display Mode, and choose Linear - Oldest First. (That's the default. You might like one of the other options, but you're more likely to find them confusing.) When you're done choosing your options scroll down to the bottom and click Save Changes. Until you do that nothing will change.

While you're there you might want to look at Forum Skins and choose BFC Large Print if your eyes are not as young as they used to be.

Isn't it strange how debris magically appears when a race is strung out near the end ?
Lot of contenders by the wayside today too.

Florida considering a # 3 memorial license plate ! The state has about 60 vanity plates that carry a large surcharge. An awful lot of money is made on them. If this comes to pass,it'll probably be the best seller ever.

On a much smaller scale we just finished our www.rallynewyork.com. Where else do you have to sweep bears off the course [as we did in Nov ] and pull a car out of the pond [as we did this time ] and deal with belligerent locals that have their roads blocked for the race ??? Real racing !!

Seems everything went to suit you . They make vanilla, strawberry & chocolate milkshakes so almost everyone's taste is covered.

We Southerners prefer to see everything up close & personal & on a weekly basis.

I don't know Uncle Alan, I used to be glued to the tele for the NASCAR races. Now it'll be on and I'll be on the 'net (read: here) or I'll be in and out and sit down for the last 20 or 30 laps.
I don't know if it is because all my favorite drivers are retiring or 'cause it is getting too much like the WWF.
Even DW is getting a bit hackneyed.
Boogity, boogity humbug.

Like you,my heroes are going/gone. Now I watch the start, pick up a book & leave the sound on barely above mute. If something spectacular occurs the increasing volume alerts me. It is starting to seem is if somewehere there is a puppeteer & at the end the winner's remarks are canned & sanitized.

Oh,well,I'm both spoiled with a good memory & jaded from too much B/S.

I was told this morning that in our rally someone filmed the car going into the pond .If it's posted on a website I'll let you know !! ....NASCAR also started out small and it's taken 50 years to get to where they are today......For photos of the rally and our "water hazard" - www.onalimbracing.com go to Gallery - 2006 Rally NY

Years ago when NASCAR was unheard of,the South teemed with short dirt tracks. A couple of them had sculpted turns WITHOUT a fence. Realize the momentum & g-forces going into a turn flat-out ! If you ran out of track ,just drive over the banking & drive back up onto the track at full throttle.
This produced some interesting wrecks & the also-rans [ aka back markers ] took home much larger purses !

Lord, I sure miss those un-orchestrated days !

Alan and I'm sure other long time NASCAR fans remember the days when all many of the tracks had were those little-bitty outside retaining walls and metal guard rails. I remember watching a race when I was a kid...at Talladega I believe...where a driver I cannot recall flew completely off the track and out of the speedway. Also, If I remember correctly, one of the NASCAR legends lost his life in that very manner...Lund, Roberts or Lorenzen...can't remember...Alan...HELP!
There was also a driver who for years dreaded racing at Daytona as he was scared to death of wrecking and winding up in Lake Lloyd, which is located in the infield of the track, still strapped into his car.

Pocono has been infamous over the years for competitors other than the four-wheeled variety taking stroll on the track...during a race! Several deer and one obviously very inebriated human being come to mind.

Finally, speaking of debris cautions, Reed Sorenson mysteriously had a peice of roll-bar padding fly out of his window during the Busch race Saturday. Interestingly enough, this happened shortly after radioing his pits about a bad vibration or some other impending calamity. The boys in the big red (or is it now yellow?) hauler evidently didn't find it so mysterious and black flagged him for a one lap penalty shortly there after.

Tiny Lund lost his life like that.He was tire-testing in California . Most folks forget that Tiny is the man that pulled Fireball Roberts from his burning car at Charlotte. Fireball lingered & died from severe burns.
" Fireball " was put on Robert's because of his fastball pitching in highschool . Nothing to do with his driving but it carried over onto the track.

How about passing the word on the Monday night racing in the days when you could identify a car?
I laugh when I see an oldie & see the O/E bumpers & doors with the driver's arm resting on the window sill. The headlights & tail lights were removed but gaping holes weren't covered. Guess at around 100 mph it really didn't matter.

Tiny Lund died in a wreck during the race at Talladega in 1975. You must be thinking about someone else who died while testing in California. I wish I could come up with a name but it doesn't ring a bell for me.

Lund was a regular at our local track, Old Dominion Speedway in Mannasas VA, back in those days and was at the track a day or two before he died at 'Dega.

You're right about Lund. He pulled Marvin Panch out of a burning car & Panch got Lund to sub until he recovered. He won once or twice as a sub.

Now, I heard [word of mouth, newspapers had very little to do with racing then] that Lund pulled Fireball out at Charlotte. Boy ! I'm not trying to do a myth/legend thing but his obit fails to reveal that.

Oh well, better a fogging memory than none at all.
