NASCAR ,anyone, someone.... Just me ?

How about passing the word on the Monday night racing in the days when you could identify a car?
I laugh when I see an oldie & see the O/E bumpers & doors with the driver's arm resting on the window sill. The headlights & tail lights were removed but gaping holes weren't covered. Guess at around 100 mph it really didn't matter.

Safe racing !

My how times have changed. Now-a-days every little detail to reduce drag is scrutinized...especially at Daytona and 'Dega. The least little thing that could possibly catch air is bad, bad. The Hendrick boys even went so far at Daytona this year as to paint every single decal on their cars. They evidently felt that the whole 1/64 of an inch those things stick up off the cars could make a difference. I wonder how many wind tunnel sessions at $100,000 a pop it took to figure that out.

Alan is speaking of the new Dale Jr. show...Mon nights on SPEED...called Back in the Day. It's basically a rerun of an old racing show, hosted by a guy named Bud Lindeman, highlighting Cup races from yesteryear. So far I've seen races fron the 60's and 70's. This week was the '68 and '73 races at Bristol. They've modernized it with added commentary by Jr. in the form of pop-ups and little known facts. The footage is pretty cool for those of us that wax nostalgic for the good ol' days.

Those old races reminded me of how some drivers cheated a bit. Some aluminum was used on hoods & trunk lids & a few tried using it for bumpers. A small maganet stopped it,probably the first detector used. One clever guy had his roll bars [hollow tubing ] attached to his fuel system & got about a gallon's advantage.
Gas tanks were factory & came with dimple-like indentations to strengthen & leave small recesses for sediment to collect.
They would put so much air pressure on them that the dimples would pop out & increase capacity.
Smoky Yunick revealed a trick he used on the winning Hudsons. O/E was 2 downdraft carbs but it took an agonizing lap or two to wind up that big flathead engine. He would take that extremely heavy flywheel off, remove the starter ringgear & bore a bunch of holes from the outer flywheel side in toward where it bolted to the crankshaft. By removing a substantial amount of weight, that beast would rev very quickly & boogie while the rest of the slow-winders struggled.
Some fuels were tailor made & the old blenders usually had deformed fingertips from the chemicals.
The early graphited lubriplate was used to pack wheel bearings to afford minimum rolling resistance but had to be carefully used because of the heat generated.

Think it was Gary Nelson, then crew chief for Bobby Allison, who was accused of the fuel in the roll bars deal. He also was thought to have 'invented' a device which held lead bird shot in the roll bars and at the flip of a switch it could then be jettisoned out on the track, thus making the car lighter. Ironically enough, NASCAR later hired Nelson to be their director of competition..."if you can't bet 'em"....
Here is an article that highlights some of what Alan was talking about. http://charlotte.creativeloafing.com/2003-10-08/news_cover.html
I also read another on FoxSports website listing the top 5 "cheaters" in NASCAR history:
5. Robin Pemberton
4. Ray Everenham
3. Gary Nelson
2. Junior Johnson
1. Smokey Yunick
Good stuff!

"If you ain't cheatin'...you ain't winnin'"

My memory is sooooooo bad, and I think UA set me straight on this last time, but wasn't it Smokey Yunick that built the car 1/10th smaller?
Only got busted when they parked a full size race car right next to it.

One of my favorites was when the in car cameras were first taking off.
One of the announcers noticed that, at speed, the hood would bow down near the windshield therefore increasing the amount of air that was let in.
Turns out the team removed the braces.
All the teams had them back in within 2 weeks.

DW mentioned, a good while ago, about the extra, extra, extra long fuel line that got a good bit of extra fuel on board.

So tell me about tire soaking.
How does that work?

nascar is realy pointless. the only realon most people watch is for the crashes which arent that spectacular. whats more they elbow out more sereous racing for TV time. a good example is SPEED's two wheel tuesday. tuesday used to show motorcycle roadracing all day and had a 1 hour show called TWT. this show was droped to 30 min(ad content suffered) and the racing cut two only a few races in the morning. They used to show BSB WSB formula extreme and moto GP among ama motocross super cross and arena cross. now your lucky to get a moto gp race and maby some formula extreme. Nascar does not need that much coverage, after all its just a big circle. I think nascar fans would benifit from a look outside nascar. try forlula one that is some real racing. and if you want to see a fight betwen racers Moto GP's max biaggi and valentino rossi have fought on and off the track. rossy was elbowed out of a turn at 100+ only to give biaggi the finger passing him in the next turn. they fought after the race for real. its kinda funny watching someone in full racing leathers try to back kick someone.

I think you are missing something. There is a world of difference between racing on banked tracks and racing on a flat tracks. There is a world of difference racing on concrete and asphalt. There is a world of difference between racing on road tracks and racing on ovals. There is a world of difference between racing on 2 1/2 mile superspeedways and racing on 1/2 mile ovals. There is a world of difference between restrictor plate racing and open carb racing. There is a world of difference between racing at 200 mph and racing at 100 mph.

It is precisely because of the incredible variety of track conditions, vehicle setups, and strategies that I enjoy watching NASCAR.

trash/trash/trash,
Perhaps it is pointless to you, but certainly not to the people who are fans and the Fortune 500 companies who spend millions of dollars in it year after year. Why don't you start a thread on the type of racing you like and not trash one about one that isn't.
There is a reason NASCAR gets so much coverage...it's the 2nd most popular spectator sport in the country...trailing only the NFL. Hence the maximum exposure.
Your thread seems to self-imply the same close mindedness you accuse NASCAR fans of harboring. To each their own. When it comes to racing, I am first and formost a NASCAR fan. However, contrary to your post, I enjoy all types of motorsports and speed. I've attended drag racing, powerboat, motocross, sportscar and even airplane racing events. Had a blast at them all and watch them all on television.
Your statement about other forms of racing being more serious is ridiculous. Don't you really mean those that you prefer. I actually don't care for the crashes much at all...they slow down the racing and take away some of the strategy and decision making as well. Try telling any of the stock car guys that their racing isn't serious...more specifically Dale Earnhardt, Adam Petty or Ernie Irvan. Oops sorry Dale and Adam are dead and Ernie has suffered some serious disabilities...yeah, not serious.
Have an open and reasonable mind man.

OK, why is this thread in the Gadgets and Gear forum? Shouldn't there be some sort of logic behind the decision to allow this thread in Gadgets and Gear instead of the Community forum?

Sometimes racing threads can get a bit technical or can focus on the cars rather than the sport or the drivers, so it's just sort of by convention and agreement with the moderators that all racing threads go in G & G.

Finally got the speeds for our recent rally - average 85 mph. Not bad for country roads, pot holes, curves and one good straight away [140 + ].

Chaos,
Too funny...Smoke fan here too, but shop at Lowes as the Depot always seems to piss me off when I go in there.

Was watching an episode of Past Champions on SPEED and it was Cale who flew over the wall and out of the track...amazing footage of that...an eight story plummet down the dirt bank on the outside of the track. He just climbed right back up it and hopped back over the wall. I'd also forgotten that when Ford pulled out of stock car racing for a few years, Cale drove Indy cars...around '68-72 or so...

Bloodthirsty fans ?

Wrecks can be exciting but deaths are not.

Wilson,N.C. area late '60's . Demolition derby night. Kid has no seatbelts & wraps chain across himself & loops it through 2 holes in the floorboard,is flipped, other cars bumper catches chain underneath & severs body.

Carolina Beach,N.C. late '60's. New car, well prepared '55 Chevvy. New young driver qualified well & after several aborted starts unhooks seatbelt to pull wrap fron dirty windshield . Unexpected green & failure to hook back up to keep position ---wreck in first turn,is hurled out his windor & thundering herd grinds kid into small pieces. Nephew of Richard Brickhouse, winner of first Talladega race. He faded into poverty & obscurity.

These are just 2 horrible deaths in remote areas but they were someone's son, brother, cousin, best friend.....
