Native 5, I have to apologize to you

I hadn’t thought of that. I’d be curious how much you can take off before you lose tension on the back spring.

I really like this knife, but have one gripe about it.

Don’t y’all feel like the tip is too close to being exposed? It seems that after 10-20 sharpenings you’d have to grind the spine down to drop it below the handle again. Maybe it wouldn’t bother “you” but it did enough for me to sell mine.
Outdoor55 recently did a video complaining about that exact issue. 🤨

Never sharpened a spyderco enough to have that issue myself. There are tons of people who have carried VG-10 knives for decades and still have safe functional knives. For modern super steels, with regular use, I wouldn't think you would ever get that far up the blade. Your behind the edge thickness would also be significantly higher than original. Design is a balancing act and Sal does a great job meeting my needs and preferences. Do you have pics of the knife with a tip sticking up past the liner I would be curious to know more about the question you are posing.

Take very little off at a time. My experience with slipjoints in the past, (only a couple of times), was that a little goes a long way.

You can do it carefully by pulling along reasonably coarse quality sandpaper and test frequently.

Thanks Blues Blues , I will have to try this out.

I am not trying to poopoo this knife. I really liked it when owned it. Like I said I sold it because this was enough of an issue for me.
Good to know that if I end up getting another I’ll have a way to alleviate this.

I haven't tried it on anything but a slipjoint, so no promises. Might be worth trying on something less dear to experiment with. But hope it does help.

I really like the Native 5, no issues here. Got it in Spydercos proprietary steel, CPM-Spy27. It has become a favorite steel in my collection of users. Like the size of the piece too, my kind of pocketknife. I did get am aftermarket clip for this one not shown here.

Liked the steel so much that I added another Dragonfly in Spy27 for my ultralight hiking kit. With the half and half choil I can get a full four fingers on this amazing no nonsense cutting tool. Got this one from DLT, zero blade play, zero lock rock, just perfect. I like a lot of their models and am a real FRN junkie, strong, weather resistant, very good grip and makes the folders very lightweight which is a must for my preferences. I would definitely buy Dragonflies in other steels if and when. My K390 model is superb. Still like the Spy27 for this the best.

Always love the Native 5, but no way in hell can i use a sub 7 inch knife. Almost every blade i own is over 8 , so this would feel like a keychain.

I tried to love the Native 5 for a long time, but the FRN models just really don't do it for me (I love Seki FRN though. And the new PM2 in FRN is about as perfect a knife as has ever been made).

I had an older G10 version with the full liners that I liked just OK. Then one day, by chance, I decided to make my own FrankenNative, and it has become one of my favorite EDC users.

I took an S35VN Spyderedge blade and lockbar with DLC off of a LW with a beat up handle and put them into my linered G10 handle. Now I have a G10 DLC Spyderedge Native 5. As far as I know, this version was never produced by Spyderco, but it definitely should have been.

That's pretty cool. I like the contrast of the lockbar & liners.

If anyone is interested, here are a couple pics of my Spyderco Native collection that I posted elsewhere on BF some time ago & that has not changed since then:

The native feels great in hand and looks great, until you actually need some cutting surface length and then it kinda falls on its face. I liked the one I tried but could never love it since where I live there are little to no knife laws so it doesn't make since to not just carry a Millie or police.

I know how you feel. Where I live, any knife you carry is subject to the cop's opinion on if it's a weapon or not, which generally boils down to "were you doing something else criminal" when you got stopped. I'm carrying a military 2 crucarta and this native.
I tend to carry two knives anyways, with one being smaller for general little stuff and the larger one for food and things a longer blade is good for. That way I reduce how often I have to sharpen the larger knife as it's more time intensive, and I have an option when there are karens and other "erghmawgawd that's a big knife!!!" types around.

I used to only carry one folder, but as I get busier and older, I have less time for my own interests and hobbies and any time and way I can reduce ongoing/revolving needs and being able to shift them to when I have more time for me, I take those opportunities.

Y'all are awful, just terrible enablers! ;) After reading this thread, I could no longer contain myself. I went and ordered my second Native 5 (which I realize pales by comparison to some of y'all). I don't have it yet, but I'm looking forward to getting my Native 5 Salt in Magnacut!

Yes, the Tuf-Glide seems to have eliminated a good deal, or pretty much all of the grittiness thus far. It's still a little tight compared to the Leaf Jumper, but not to the point where it detracts from anything, if that makes sense.
