Need for Guns?

It's not ALL hoax, Lavan....

As I recall the picture of the remains did, in fact, come from yet another bear victim. There was a relatively recent incident in Canada where a grizzly killed one or more people (two, I think) in one incident. When the Forest Service folks from Canada overflew the area they found two bears feeding on the remains and tracked/killed both of those bears shortly thereafter.

This wasn't documented on the Snopes site as such, and I'm not where I can verify my recollection at the moment... but I'm reasonably sure that's close.

The pictures do make the point quite well, though, and I'm pretty sure that in the heat of the moment all bears look alike. ;)

Yes. Our Constitution applies to everyone that lives in our country legally, not just citizens. Some of us still hold our freedoms very near and dear to our hearts.

In another forum I head you needed to be a 'alien' because they changed the Visa rules after 9/11 - they didn't go into detail, anyone knows if theres any truth in this?

I carry a gun in the woods & pepper spray in the streets for the same reason why I wear a seat belt while driving.

While I know that I myself am a responsible law-abiding citizen, I have no idea what the person I'm going to meet in the woods, in the streets or on the road is capable of.

I'm not afraid of the world. But, I'm not going to disable my airbags and remove my seatbelts because I have faith in the goodness of my fellow man.

Well, four pages and I haven't seen one of my main reasons for carrying a gun or two. I don't generally do the whole "hiking" thing, but bum around our private woods whenever I get the chance. If I were to go on public property I would also be just as concerned about defense against crazies.

Guns are a given if I'm hunting, but I also bring one for fun otherwise. I love guns just as much as knives. (I'm sure many here can relate) I don't get to carry a rifle or shotgun around daily these days (like I used to) so I jump at every chance/excuse I get. I always bring along plenty of ammo so I can do some plinking or practice from field positions at various improvised targets. This keeps my skills far sharper than punching paper off a bench rest at some range. It's great being out in the woods, isn't it? The joy of being with nature is one of the main reasons I go, and bringing along a gun connects me to my heritage and adds greatly to my pleasure.

If someone thinks only paranoid militia members bring guns hiking, try looking at it from the above perspective. As a fellow knife nut here, haven't you ever been ticked off by sheeple asking "What do you need that weapon for?!" when you pull out a folder to cut some string? Same idea. If that still ain't enough, then as was already said, I want to and I can. That's enough for me.

poss,

I think the primary reason you haven't seen your "plinking" reason listed is that the open space available for legal plinking is quickly shrinking.

National Parks--with very few exceptions--are off-limits, and most State and Local parks ban shooting, period.

That leaves basically only the National Forest areas, and some other areas under the auspices of the BLM for "plinking".

I'm fortunate to have a buddy with 100 acres of prime, hilly, land (he has vineyard) who shares our love for firearms and recreational shooting.

;)

Here in northern Norway we don`t need guns for protection agains predators, four legged nor two legged as there aren`t any. The bears are so scarse that if you see one you should consider yourself lucky to actually see something very few people have seen.
But if one are hiking in areas where bears live it is wise to carry a gun. Better safe than sorry.
(On Svalbard everyone moving outside Longyear town has to carry a gun for protection against polar bears)

As for the two legged ones; people are seldom as friendly and polite as when they are in the in the woods.

We do however carry guns in the hunting season (autumn and winter). You seldom meet a person in fall without a gun. And you seldom are alone in the woods in the fall. Lots of hunters in Norway.

But I can understand (from reading the posts) that other pack a gun when out in the woods. And why not, even when its not "needed", plinking is a lot of fun :).

There's always the logic of its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Of course that is pretty much the mentality of this board so I'm preaching to the chior.

Having a gun along does not make you safe it merely makes you armed. Being safe is a whole different set of skills and behaviors. If you do choose to go armed then you have the moral obligation to be competent and SOBER while you carry. Skill with a handgun is not part of the initial purchase price it needs to be acquired over YEARS of regualar practice.

If you are really worried about bear protection and have little or no experience with handguns then by all means buy a Bear sized pepper spray. Studies show that they are just as effective or more so than firearms in stopping bear attack. Mac

I've seen some reports about illegal drug making on public hunting land, so be careful when your out there... 2 legged predators are worse than 4 legged.

Im in Australia , when I first got my shooters license , I was drunk and got it for a dare , , they guy who dared me even coughed up the $25 fee for it , I managed to get the 5 questions right on the form I was given to fill out , I asked the cop who gave me the form for the answers and I walked out 5 minutes later licensed to own and use whatever I wanted basicly ...
my boss gave me a single shot .22 with open sights for being so dumb / brave as to try it .
I camped allover for a couple year afterward with various guns along , I tell ya it revolutionised hunting for me , from stalking and stressing to point n pull , meant I could stay out for months longer than I could before because food was no not an issue , it got me thru some financialy very tight spots

when the buyback came in force , my hunting changed I bought a compound bow and went back to the old ways a lot , and I got to say I dont have the confidence I used to , to just head out and do whatever

that could be because of age tho too

but Ihave had a few encounters that if I hadve had a firearm , I reckon I would have used it , but not having had it , at most having only had a knife , I thought harder and longer and the situations ended without violence .

I can list off a sting of rapes assults home invasions etc that just wouldnt have happened if people hadve been allowed to keep their guns tho ...

I take a knife or two with me even to church , Im getting older , I have a few bulged disks and fractured vertabrae that make being so stealthy as I like for bow hunting harder , and the old point n pull of gun hunting seems so much more appealing to me now ..

just my thorts on the matter tho :)

Speaking of mountain lions I've read that there have been sightings in upstate New York. Gets pretty remote up there so it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Oh My Gosh, Yes!

I think what you're referring to is item 50 U.S.C., pp 21-24, Alien & Sedition Act of 1918.

The news reported the other day, that once again Missouri was #1 in meth lab seizures with 1700+, the no. 2 state had 600+.
I carry, most of my local camping is along the rivers on a gravel bar, and just having a firearm is usually enough to make the problem people move on.
