Never thought I'd...

I could see spending 300 on a carothers or a survive but that's it . I hope my tastes don't change

Another "I never thought" and the state of paradoxical "nutjobphobia":

I never thought I'd spend almost 8 Bill$ on a single fixed yet at the same time while browsing say Costco kitchen knives, I SMH and say under my lips, "I can't believe folks are paying $300 for that lot".

I reckon I have it in me to pass the $1K threshold soon. Who's in agreement with this nutjob here? ;)
I can't see myself ever passing $1000 unless I get much wealthier. But then, I never thought I'd pass $50, let alone $100. I hit $200 quite some time ago. But that seems to be where it stopped for me. There's a few $300 blades I've eyed in the last few years, but never went for it.

Never thought I'd be having my own designs being produced. Never thought I'd become an internationally known specialist of American scythes, either--that one still surprises me constantly.

you are quite a star on the Internet on your subject(s), and my source for sharpening, axe and big edged tools wisdom since year and years ago.
You really know your stuff, have a very wide and rich information and knowledge to spread and are a stand-up folk in your shop services and giving good advice.
Thumbs up for you!

And that still is helluva budget and in no way, shape or form I had wished to grandstand by throwing some larger sums out there. A lot of factors go into determining the value of something, in this instance knives. Let's just skip all the bling-bling that some makers bless their creations with and also take the rarity and collectable factors out of things which pave the way for speculation and pricing inflation in the secondary markets. In order to maintain a semblance of sanity we must all justify our own "sickness" with some sort of reference as a gauge. Personally speaking, for me that reference point was the price which I recently paid for a new Sig Sauer 9mm.

I know that some of these knives even in the 300 realm start trespassing into firearm realm but I can live with that. To me, when a special order from Sergey Shirogorov can run into $10K, if you're lucky to get one; then the space time continuum of sanity gets topsy turvy! In closing, I've made my peace with something which may run north of a Grand later on if I feel that I have really earned it, but that would be it. By "earning" I do not mean just having the purchasing power but more importantly, having gained the necessary knowledge and the the privilege of owning a fine piece that I have my eyes on. Those makers whom you've mentioned (CPK and S! in that order) make great semi-custom and very good production level knives with very good values and functionality as their underpinning

I used to be under the opinion that paying over 50 or 60 bucks for any knife was absolutely ridiculous. However, I can now say I have owned folders that have costed more than 200 dollars on different occasions.

I never thought that a single screw would cost me hundreds of dollars and dominate my conscious thought for a year and a half and counting...
I had at best a $30 Kabar knife was the top dawg in my collection from childhood, and a few other things barely worth $5-10, but it was fine for a decade. Then one fateful day, I discovered a S&W Cutting Horse CH0030 for $5 at Dollar General. I never saw a thumb stud or liner lock so I had to have it. Went the next week and got a Schrade XTimer for $4 on clearance. I used the S&W for 7 or so years, then discovering the rusting liners under the plastic scales I HAD to tear it down to clean it up. That was my super awesome nothing could beat it so I needed to get it back to 100%. Despite using proper tools and a magnet to keep the screws, one screw vanished. I looked for days. Got one that worked but was mismatched. I was sad. Then I figured I could spend $20 on a new blade. Did 2 weeks of Google Fu and ended up chasing a Sanrenmu 710 thread here on BF now I'm 40 knives ahead of where I was, and you all know how this turns out.

Never thought I'd be into autos but these came in this month...

I still like almost all the same types of knives I did many years ago...I just have more expensive, higher quality versions of them. :D

Although I did hate knives with flippers until I got a good one in hand; now, I don't mind them at all.
So I guess that's a change. :)

Never thought I would
1. Buy a "tactical" folder. Don't worry. It was only a ZT 0560 and I sold it.:p
2. Make a stock removal knife.
3. Make a FULL TANG stock removal knife from stainless steel, even simple stuff like AEB-L

Never thought I'd be that guy (at work, at my kids functions, out with my friends) but here I am rockin' it!

In all seriousness I never thought I'd see the day when I didn't carry a ~3" folder, even at first I was comfy giving up my main EDC folder for a fixed blade but I didn't think I'd ever stop carrying the [spyderco] P'Kal in my LRP, well now even that's went the way of the dodo, my EDC is either one or two fixed blades, one usually above 6" blade length.

Never thought I'd buy world class cutting tools and never actually use them as intended, well at least so far.

I haven't gotten to knife making yet, but it seems my father-in-law is vaguely interested, hmmm...

About the tacticool stuff, I'm sure almost all of us have had/still have some tactilol stuff somewhere, I know I do!
