NEW 4.7 Thread

Anyway, anybody still waiting on a 4.7, starter/pre-order/pre-sale/second/Betty/etc.? I think they said that all starters had shipped, October saw a big up-tick in shipping notices and November is the month that Ellie said would feature another (at least that's how I read her comment), so I am looking forward to tomorrow's "First Friday Production Update".

Still waiting for my July 2015 pre-order..........

Me too....but I think they are going to put as many of my pre-order knives as they can in a single order. Oh well.

This really gets under my skin.. I am in the same shoes as many of you - Order placed in December 2015 and no news of shipment or anything.. Why is survive taking more orders every month and shipping those knives ASAP and way before those of us that are sitting and waiting for a year?? Makes no sense.. Defend Guy all you want, but unless they start processing their pending orders first, I am done with them until they fix their business practices.. We all know the steel was ordered in 2015, and we even PAID for it in full so Guy can get a good idea what's needed.. But what does he do? sits on those orders for a year and instead works on new steel orders from people who ordered MUCH more recently..

I dunno, I've placed a lot of orders more recently than December that I haven't seen filled yet.
My suspicion is that the firsts are few and far between and that they have been requiring a lot of hand processing to get to the desired state.
The logical assumption is that Guy processed the really good blanks early on and now he has to wade through the progressively worse ones and spend increasing amounts of time on each to get them to make the grade.
That implies that his production rate would actually slow down (all things being equal) not speed up as he works his way through the orders for each model.
I'm still waiting to see what happens.

This would not surprise me. In fact, in the box that contained my 3V 4.7 Starter (that's before the pre-orders and pre-sales), there was a note from the Seiferd's to that effect - a LOT of the 4.7's didn't "make the cut" in terms of quality and ended up as "seconds" (or UBs, i guess), hence the really long delay. To those worried about December 2015 orders, this was a Starter ordered in April 2015, delivered October (11th, I think). My understanding is that S!K has successfully put out all the remaining 4.7 Starter orders ("firsts") and is working their way through to complete the Pre-order and Pre-sale "first" orders. I'll tell you my main concern: they've been selling 4.7 "seconds" as they came across them... but they haven't had any available for a while now... WHAT IF that's because so many 4.7s had problems that they actually DID have to send some back to the machinists or have had to put a LOT of hand-work into them because they realized that they weren't going to have enough "firsts" to fulfill all the orders?? That would suck, and is an argument for not selling seconds while "first" orders are still pending, but it's also not likely something that they expected after the 5.1 build went so well. *shrug*

Regarding lost e-mail confirmations, You'd probably need that to tell them which order# to cancel, but having a transaction # would probably go along way to finding that order # in their e-records. Have faith! I've yet to see them fail to fulfill an order... but WOW does it take a while sometimes :p

Also, this 4.7 is freakin' awesome. Just sayin'.

Chiral, as I recall there was a lot of consternation at the time about how long it was taking to get the 5.1 run completed.
The 5.1 knives were (with a few exceptions like my very recent Ugly order) shipped between December and April.
The 4.7 knives have been shipping since February and as you mentioned they are not completed yet.
That implies that either the 4.7 production run was much larger than the 5.1 run or that the defect rate was much higher.
Since the production order was reported to be based on the number of Starter orders (and they only recently filled all the starter orders) it seems likely that a high defect rate, or a complete revision of the in house processing techniques, or some combination of the two factors is causing the process to drag on.

The first line from the most reliable/factual/accurate production schedule in the northern hemisphere should put all our concerns to rest:
"GSO-4.7: Preorders are on schedule to ship out next week. Presales will be shipping out in the following weeks."

:p  ;) (can't think of any civilized words to put here :( )

Wow ^ that truly sucks. At least you've got leverage in the form of the other $1000 worth of orders I guess.

Also even if you can't pull up an order conf, can you at least find a transaction to show them in your financial records?

Thanks, Timichango. Good idea on the financial records. Hadn't thought of that. I think that will work. However…

The first Friday production update really eased my concerns. To know they are still working pre-orders, with pre-sales after that, I'm all good. I was starting to think they had processed through the presales, from some of the things I had been reading. Since they haven't, I'll just keep waiting. I know it is going to be worth the (frustrating) wait. The CruV 4.7 has found its way into one of my favorite blades, just on fit alone. I love that knife.

You're right.........I should stop being so cynical and try be a bit more positive!

The most ardent Survive! fans understand people's frustration with delivery times. I just think the wait is worth the heartburn. I like the 4.7 enough to have three of them and I might yet look for a stainless version. Or another with the new heat treat down the road.

Have at thee, Klean Strip!

I wonder if Grog could have asked Guy for one of the spare uncoated CFV seconds? :)
Carry on with the destruction testing, I for one am impressed!

Apologies for temporarily derailing grogimus' cerokate removal discussion, but I thought some folks might be a little interested to hear about an email I received back from SURVIVE!

The main topic of the email I originally sent was to request the cancellation of my 4.1 presale.

I also asked this person if they could ask Guy/Ellie directly when my 4.7 preorder from June 2015 would get shipped. This person then replied and said "All of the preorders for the GSO-4.7 have been built, and are being shipped as they are sharpened. Your order #60** should be shipped by the end of the year."

So I'm not that confident those of us waiting for our preorders will receive shipping notices this week as it was stated in the last 1st Friday production update.
Oh well.........I suppose waiting another month or so isn't the end of the world.

At least I no longer have almost $1,000 tied with this company :D

Hey now, I'm talking SCIENCE! Except, you know, without a test and control subject. Or anything actually scientific.

I truly hope you and everyone else who has ordered one gets your 4.7's in hand soon so you can see what all the fuss is about. It's such a minor thing it's hardly even worth mentioning but I do wish the pommel was rounded off for some woodworking stuff where it's convenient to cup the knife in the palm of your hand for pushing the point but other than that I don't know how you make a better midsized general purpose knife.

I wish they would stop giving any estimate at all since it just seems to frustrate people, but that belongs in the "concerns" thread imo.
