NEW 4.7 Thread

Well, yeah, I guess. I guess I was more thinking along the lines of usability, edge holding, and reliability. Not specifically composition. Also, I've found more of my latest Busses having much better edge geometry. I'll concede that the straight RMD edges tend to be ridiculously thick.

I might be splitting hairs, but these were just my observations and me airing some frustration at the blade geo. All good knives and great steels.

You and I are on the same page w.r.t. thick edges. S!K's edges are the best, by far.

While wandering through the Survive website I noticed an update to the CFV status.

"UPDATE: Turns out our Cerakote applicator won a lottery and manage to get a moose tag this season. Great news for him, however, this has caused a delay in getting the last of the Cru Forge V blades finished up. As soon as he gets his moose and we have those blades back in our workshop we will be getting them processed through the last steps. Existing orders will ship in December. We apologize for the inconvenience."

I find this amusing. :) I used to work with a person from Pennsylvania and they considered deer season to be a state holiday. It seems like Idaho has a similar attitude. Frying pan, meet fire. Or, knife culture just doesn't form in a vacuum.

The production schedule says existing cruforge orders are in their final steps and this update is just on the cruforge ordering page, so those with current orders won't be affected, right?

This is some very specific communication. Baby steps.

Why are they shipping cru orders from mid-2016 before many 3v 2015 orders?

We know different models get fit in the grinding schedule little by little. I meant to compare current cruforge orders with future orders.

My best guess is that they ship knives when all the parts are sitting there in the shop ready to fill an order.
The corollary to that guess is that they don't ship knives when they don't have all the parts sitting there to fill an order.
If you want to know exactly why your order can't be filled today that is a different question.
They have published pictures of all the blanks sitting in their shop, and I don't personally expect an explanation for why mine hasn't been shipped.
You do of course have the option of contacting Survive to inquire, but I don't know if the answer that you receive is going to satisfy you.

My order in late September is among the affected. I received an email similar to the above after asking why it didn't ship next month per the lead time quote.

It is with great delight that I announce that I've just received a shipping notice for my 4.7 preorder (from June last year) :D :D

Sorry to hear this. I know it doesn't help with your order arriving sooner, but at least there's no mystery about it.

Yes! Which steel? I know they have a ways to go, but this is progress!

CPM3V. I've been wanting you ask you something SN. Has your 4.7 replaced your 5.0, or do you treasure them both equally??

Yip, this is progress (slowly but surely). I'll therefore stop my whining in those other threads, and if/when Survive improves their production and delivery times, I'll certainly buy directly from them again.

Ahh!!! Very tough question. My short answer is that I like the 4.7 better................ because of the improved heat treat and handle ergonomics. I don't really prefer one finish over the other. I like the rounder spine and taller blade height of the 5 AND the 5 is still an amazing knife on its own. I love the dimensions and handle and heft and geometry. The 4.7 just has the updates and improvements.

I appreciate your comparison! I was curious to know because I don't have a big collection of mid-size knives with which I can compare the 4.7 to yet.
The most similar knife in my inventory is a Jeff White phantom. It's very pleasing to eyes, BUT the handle ergonomics are terrible and convex edge way too steep for most slicing/whittling tasks. So I know straight away that the 4.7 will blow it out of the water.

Whilst waiting impatiently for the 4.7 shipping notice, I came very close to pulling the trigger on a Lionsteel M5 but was put off by various opinions of the Sleipner tool steel.
CPM3V all the way.......

The mystery that was cleared up for me was whether the Production Schedule page is a useful way to assess order status. For me it is not since "final steps" includes profiled blanks being at a sub for coating with no valid date for completion. Return, handle assembly, sharpening, inspection, kitting and packaging having yet to be completed. The pace of order fulfillment has long suggested the page was not useful but this is more definitive.
