New A.G. Russell Barlow Lockback anyone like this one?

I really like thong holes, but while I love the great hollow grind on that blade (it makes opening the blade with one hand so easy.) and the fit and finish is really great, I should not have put that thong hole in place. I crowded the handle with so much blade that there was not really room for the hole at the end and I put it too close and too small. I feel like I did not do as well here as I should have.

I appreciate your honesty. It still looks good to me!
I am going to order a yellow delrin version and see what I think.

Then on the other hand, there is the utility value of the lanyard hole. I have come to appreciate that more after buying a knife that actually had a lanyard attached at the factory. With a short lanyard, I can hook it onto my belt with a small hook and that makes it much easier to get to, and absolutely painless when wearing work gloves. No fishing around in my pocket for my knife. Grab the lanyard and pull the knife out of my pocket and ready to go.

I will admit that it does look a bit cramped on the butt of the knife, but I am glad the hole is there. Especially since this knife is just begging to be put to work!

Count me in for one. While the thong hole may appear to crowd the handle, I welcome the addition of it.
Gonna be me fathers day purchase :)

I have my yellow Barlow in-hand and I am very happy with it. The knife is finished extremely well and locks up tight with no play. Factory edge was good, but not as good as my Rancher. No problem, b/c I usually sharpen a new knife anyway. I like this blade steel - very easy to sharpen to a fine edge. Blade grind is excellent and a nice thin edge. Boxes, envelopes, and some fruits & vegetables were a pleasure to cut.

It has some heft to it! Probably the steel construction, which I think is really nice. The steel bolsters look really good; they have a nice finish and are one of my favorite features of this knife. The relatively thick, boxy construction gives a lot of security when using the knife. The long-pull is shallow, but perfectly sufficient b/c the blade is easy to open due to the lockback mechanism. Easily pinch-able also. One hand opening is possible, but probably not something I am likely to do very often.

This knife packs a lot of blade (I measure just over 2.5" cutting edge) into a 3.5" frame. The blade will not hit the backspring due to a stop-pin in the frame. The blade tip is safely buried within the handle when closed (a nearly-exposed tip is a pet-peeve of mine). I like the blade shape a lot - both pointy enough and enough belly for my tastes, and the swedge looks good.

A very nice addition to the recent AGR traditional releases, and my favorite of the bunch.

Thanks for the review! I still need to wait a bit before purchasing, but it is great to see some feedback from someone that actually has one in their hand.

As a side note, I am surprised as well at just how much blade Mr. Russell can get into the handle. I have this one in the white bone wharncliffe -

and when opened it doesn't look like the blade will fit in the handle. Fits fine, though. And like your new acquisition, the fit and finish are excellent.

I just got my Barlow yesterday in ebony Rucarta. It's just as nice as all the other AG designed knives. This one has the coil spring to release the lock and the blade stop inside the frame.

It might me a little too heavy to carry in the pocket of dress pants , but no problem with jeans, it's a lot of knife in a small package.

Thanks for the reviews and comments. I like the looks of this one, and from the pics I sure thought it had a flat ground blade. But A.G. says hollow grind in his post above.

I'd be interested if I could get one to Europe. Looks robust, practical and well-made at a reasonable cost.

You can order them from A.G. Russell no problem. I've so far ordered 3 packages from them. Mind you, the shipping is a touch on the high side and you might get hit with import duties....I have every time so far.

Yes, I found the shipping too high for my taste. I accept they have the right to charge as they see fit though.

I like it too. Especially the yeller one.

Anybody notice that he opened the blade with one hand? Looks like there is only a long pull. No thumbstud or hole. Was the knife designed for one hand opening or is this guy just good?

Thank you Rick!...I thought exactly the same thing , and I rewound it and played that a few times to watch his technique...it seems as though the knife would be a pull of 3 or 4 out of 10, so just the side pressure of his thumb was enough to open it...it looked pretty well done the way he did it.
I really like A.G Russels knives, extremely well made.

Thanks Duncan. A.G. commented on it as well a few posts back.

The last policy on overseas shipping I knew of was that the customer was charged the exact cost of shipping only.

I have learned that they add a $5 charge to the shipping cost.

This is like the Large Folding Hunter (2009 Tx Ranger) designed so that right handed persons can open it with one hand.. It takes a thicker than normal blade to make it possible for both right and left can do that.

A.G., this Barlow is a good lookin' knife. I usually prefer flat ground to hollow, though, for the reasons set out in Joe Talmadge's short article on your website: http://www.agrussell.com/Articles/a/105/

So, if you're still checking in on this thread, let me ask---why hollow on this one?

Thanks,

Andrew

I almost always prefer flat myself, but I cannot always do the same thing everytime. I have never seen a hollow ground Barlow and that, like the lock was enough.

Thanks for your reply and comments, A.G.

BTW, I had sent in a question to AGR, asking if the barlow grind was flat or hollow, and today received two separate replies---one saying hollow and one flat! At least I wasn't the only one confused.

I should add that your customer service folks are all topnotch and always very responsive and helpful.

Finally, I have one of the Curved Regular Jacks (Zulu spear), whose quality is very impressive. If the barlow is from the same factory, I imagine it is a real winner as well.

HOLLOW NOT FLAT I think that now every body at our place now knows which. The Barlow is from our number one factory the curved regular jack is from our number 2 makers of traditional knives

Other than the 8cr13mov, I love it!
(no, it wouldn't stop me from buying it. Just not preferred. It seems like all of my 8cr13mov steels get rust-dots fairly quick)
