A heads up....
attachment.php

I've been eyeballing these at horrible fright, so when they went on sale I used a 20 off coupon and picked one up for 23 bucks. Came with five belts. Squared up a couple knife spines, did some shaping on handle slabs and some reprofiling on a hatchet. I'm pretty impressed with it. If I can locate some half by eighteen belts in low micron grits, it would be tits for polishing. I'm actually surprised by it. Tracks good and everything. The Milwaukee is $200.
Wow, sure can't beat the price.

So I saw trades post and got the itch, picked this up for 40 today. Learned I need rubber gloves and rubber soled shoes while working with cheap machinery, lol. Question tho, and I feel like a dumbass for having to ask, but blade toward or away from the direction of the rotation? I would think toward for sharpness but I got the thinking that may cut the belt...

What the hell would you know about leather? :D

You're right; absolutely nothing. ;)

Hey guys if you haven't already check out my web page. I just added a bunch of extra things on it like a forum, a blog, and a couple external links to it. If you guys have any ideas to links you think would be good to have let me know. :)

That looks like a better little 1x42 than my old craftsman. MAKE SURE IT'S GROUNDED!
And PLEASE wear specs and a dust mask.

for grinding bevels, you face the edge into the oncoming belt, but sharpening is different. You WILL cut the belt if you face the edge up. I won't tell you know I know that...

The little grinders are very useful. You can even make an entire knife with one with patience. Order belts online, there is a MUCH better selection than at Home Despot or Lowers. There are entire companies that specialize in abrasives, not to mention full-on industrial supply houses like Grainger or McMaster (my fav) that will sell to you directly as well.

BTW, a belt grinder particularly with a fine grit WILL heat up a hardened blade fast, especially the very thin edge. It's even worse with a dull or loaded belt. Don't temper the knife outta yer knife.

1095/O1 is 'too hot' past 400-450deg (I think 1095 tolerates less heat than O1, but Kabar's is probably similar to O1). The knife might be merely warm in your hand while the temp at the all-important edge is through the roof.

Thanks! I've been practicing with old knives and all I have right now is a 120 grit belt. 220, 400, 600, 15micron, and a leather belt with compound is on its way. Can't wait!

Cool. Unless the knife has NO edge bevel at all, I think you'll be starting at 400grit at the coarsest.
It doesn't take much. I've taken to putting masking tape on the non-edge part of the blade to reduce the impact of an oops while hand-sharpening. I'm not sure that's advisable with a belt whizzing past.

and by 'hand-sharpening' I mean putting an edge bevel onto a new knife where it previously had none at all. for touch-up there's already an index and it usually takes only a swipe or two on each side.

most will find that a polished edge will glance off while cutting, it takes a lot to bite...

once you get use to it you may find yourself using only a 220 belt and jumping right to the strop.. this way you've achieved sharp with bite, the strop is merely to de-burr, and refine edge.. doesn't take a lot..

have fun and stay sharp :)

Picked up a few goodies tonight. Nothing big. A Brunton compass, w/thermometer, Nite-Ize S-Biners, and a Gerber Artifact. My OD enhanced butt pack also came in the mail today. Nice little pack.
