New Boating Knife Design. Marlin Spike??

Scott, they look pretty neat, I like the Sheepsfoot best.
On the clip thingee sliding on the suspenders, is the clip part of the sheath or a separate piece that maybe could be sewed in place once you find where you want it.
Any idea of how much they'll end up costing?
George

HOW DID I MISS THIS ONE?!?!?

Hell, and am a Mainer who grew up on the boats.
I have to say most of the good ideas are already given here. I always wore a cheapy on my oilgear, but with handle up. (afraid of losing it) :)

I'm only in Ellsworth so I'll have to find time to swing over and meet you someday.
And if your serious about needing help let me know, I'd lend a hand.

Alex.

Make it big enough to be usable.

And I want one.

I've been a 'cruiseaboard' sailor, and I've always wanted a spike and fixed blade work knife in one sheath that HOLDS the darned thing in place when the chair goes tipsy.

I've just spent the last couple of hours fascinated again by the crab fishing crews in the Bering Sea (Deadliest Catch on Discovery Channel). I watched part of it last year, but now have a greater appreciation of how they work. 1,000 lb pots going over the side, coils of thick rope following them with tether lines to bouys, all happening in a few seconds on an icy pitching deck at night. An amazing feat by tough guys. They deserve a good knife in a handy sheath.

What would the ballpark price be for one of these knives? Looking at it, I feel that it would make a perfect dive knife...As long as I make sure it is tied off to me somehow:D

Scott, I've got a question for you, though I'm pretty ignorant of what goes on when these boats are under weigh. The thing that is bothering me is that this is a 4" fixed blade, with a sheath on the arm? Is this knife going to be used during high seas or something? Because I can't imagine good things happening trying to sheath a 4" fixed blade on a bicep or center chest during rough water... as such a sheepsfoot or a hooked round point would probably be best, right?

I can see yes and no to this.

I admit to having actually put a knife in my teeth on a boat. Special circumstances. I've used neck knives (hence the special circumstance) and belt sheated knives and lanyarded folders. I think the arm sheath has something going for it since you HAVE to stop what you are doing to sheath the knife and if one arm is holding you up or even on board, it's not goiing anywhere. That's the probelm with a neck sheath, and can be a problem with a belt sheath (depending on Stuff)

Hi Guys,
Sorry I haven't answered any of your questions in a while. I was out of state visiting family, came home to a screwed up computer, and had a few Ranger Knife upgrades to finish up on.

I've been carrying the upswept model around since the day I made it. I absolutely love it. The upper serrations nicked me twice- my fault. I'm not used to carrying a double edged knife, and I got a little careless. To answer Spark's question, the upswept point is not very stabby, so I think it'll be ok, as long as you're careful. I'm making a few of my sheepsfoot models (CFBK2)too, in case a man wants the added safety. I know one is going on my PFD for kayaking. I really like Pete's idea for these scallopped type serrations on the upswept model (CFBK1). They really work great, and don't hang up on smaller line.

I don't know what is taking Texas Knifemaker's Supply so long getting my 440C steel to me. Every order I place with them takes longer and longer to deliver. The last three times something was either missing, back ordered, or both. I've called them and they just say "sorry". Once more and they'll be taking a trip over to the GBU with me. As luck would have it, I just received my Sheffield's catalog in the mail. Guess I'll give them a try next.

As far as price on these, probably around $150.00 give or take. Depends alot on the heat treat cost.

falnovice, give me a call sometime. Hell, I'm only 20 min away from you!

Hopefully the steel will show up this week and I can get a few of these up for sale soon.

Thanks,
Scott

good to hear some updates scott :D I'll be heading to training for a new job for three weeks on the tenth of april and may or may not have internet access. after that it's a couple fishing trips out of barnegat NJ, then off to my new home port of chincoteague VA. I'll keep in touch through email when I can, and I'll PM you my phone # if you want, because I am VERY interested in getting ahold of one of those babies. :D

Pete

Mr. Steven Dick, please contact me re: your email. My response keeps being returned. Thanks :)

Scott, two fold question. First, are you going to make a combo blade version and what is going to be the cost of this fine blade?
Oh, and I forgot to mention that in the Gulf of Mexico; with the oil companies we contract to; we can only have like a 3 & a half inch blade or it's consitered a weapon. Just FYI .
