Don't worry guys everything is fine!!! Thank you all for everything, I really appreciate it. - Sirusly!

STD :D you will love the 889 and the 420HC :D

I have the ATS-34 version but it is partially serrated. :( That plain edge looks real nice.

Yeah I admit I do prefer the PE. But my Dads 882 has plenty of PE cutting surface. And the serrated part does really work well.

Nice to see ya back Jim

I wouldn't mind serrations so much if I could sharpen them. I suck at sharpening even with the Lansky.

Oh yeah I agree. The 882 is great to sharpen up but I dont touch the serrated part. Mind you its such a mother of a knife.. the serrations are still like razors

Well......

The lock failed on me today. The finger chol (spelling?) saved my fingers.

I'm not happy.

It is going back to Buck Tuesday.

I was goofing around stabbing some cardboard when I felt the blade choil touch my finger. I looked down and the blade was unlocked.

I locked it up again and did a LIGHT spine whack and it failed again.

It pisses me off because this is the first knife I've ever bought where I researched it and actually went to a mall knife store to handle it. I paid retail for it and the darn thing can't even stay locked.

Now I get to see how good Buck's customer service is.

Jehosephat! All these reports of lock failure on this knife are getting to me. I haven't seen a knife I liked as much as this in a coon's age. I gotta buy it mail order so I can't test one in the store, and since I live in Canada, messing about with having to send it to Buck for warranty should the occasion arise does not thrill me. Why'n heck won't Buck fix this problem? How many sales have they lost because of it? I bet if this situation was fixed, the 889 would go on to become the new 110 in popularity.

I have 4 of them, without any problems, thank goodness.
I am unsure really, as to how "big" this problem is.
The part I highlighted in red is a pretty bold statement! LOL
I wonder if that will ever happen with any knife!
I guess its worth a shot ;)

The 889 is one of my favorites w/o question and I've recommended it more than once. That said, I am starting to think there is something to the lock-up issues that get reported here with distressing regularity.

I currently have three. My first was perfect, an awesome user IMO. 2nd and 3rd were OK, not at the same level. One has a liner that doesn't take very much pressure at all to disengage, and both have a little more liner travel than I would like (center of blade to slightly past). When open all three are very solid, no play. A fourth went back to the dealer last week. It was an ironwood LE and when open the blade would rock back and forth (spine-to-edge direction) with no effort. It would rattle with a slight hand shake. That one shook my confidence a little.

I must say I haven't had any failures or close calls yet in-use and one is almost always with me, but my reluctant conclusion is they are too inconsistent, especially with this type of lock. I really think there's something here that should be addressed.

Know what I would like to see? This thing redesigned as a lockback. Sign me up for that one.:)

Hey Blue Sky...

I "was" thinking of getting one of those (889LE).
Then I looked around and see that it isn't an upgraded steel :(
Is that correct?

Seems like a lot of bucks for a Buck with 4xx steel. Maybe it's the ironwood?
I have never seen an ironwood knife IRL so I don't know, is it that good to bump up the price by over 100%?

Gooser, its also a mirror polished blade and a LE Box :D
Only 1000 made :D
Iron wood is beautiful but I dont think its too expensive!

Here's a couple pics of some ironwood for you Goose, this will help sway- er I mean, help you make up your mind :D

I got my 889LE strictly as a display piece and a saver. My 882 Tarani is my user.

The 889 only has a 420HC mirror polished blade but it really looks great against that ironwood. I think its one of the nicer Custom Shop LE models that I own.

I tried to get a closeup, this is the best I could manage.

That is a beauty!!! Very nice grain in that wood!!
Well Goose, better get one on order!! :D

Serial number on the blade Blue Sky?

Jim...I'm looking at changing my diet from McDonald's Double Cheeseburgers to Taco Bell.

I don't remember the number, I wish I had written it down darn it.:grumpy: I vaguely recall it was somewhere around the 220's.

I went back and forth a long time about buying it, since it was quite pricey all things considered and hard to justify, but finally I just did it. The knife itself was beautiful, the ironwood was great. I really intended it to be a user for those times where a black or green tactical-type knife was not appropriate. Sadly, it ranks as one my greater disappointments knife-wise since I had thinking about it for so long.
