New Buck Strider

Goose, I wonder if the blade play issue and interference between the liner lock and the blade tang are symptoms of the same problem. Maybe it's got a bad pivot bushing that's causes the blade to sit to far back and also restricts it's rotation when the Torx screw is fully tightened.

Thanks Cool Hand Luke (nice avatar BTW), Messy, Mav, El Pollo, and Jeff for your comments since my last post about my 889 SlipJoint.

Well...I decided to take it upon myself to "fix" it. Under close inspection I found there was a rough edge on the tang where the liner lock engages.
It took more than a few hard scrapes with a mico tool screwdriver to get in there and rub that pup down. Gave me something to do. The liner lock now sits flush with the tang when deployed. Wish it would engage a bit further over the tang back...but more on that in a bit.

Torxed the pivot and the blade play is reduced. But now it doesn't deploy as fast or as easy. "Choose your problem" I guess.

As for the liner lock overlap with the blade tang. There has been some discussion about the "bevel" on the tang engagement area with the liner lock with 889SBMF knives. I note that my 2005 889SBMF blade and this 2007 889LE have different geometry in that area.

The 889SBMF is finished at an angle that starts at one edge and runs to the other. The 889LE has a "cutout" in the tang where the liner lock should be engaging. Then the balance is at 90 degrees...straight across. Ya gotta look close, but it's there.

So, all in all, while disappointed in the QA that was ("wasn't") done on the 889LE I was able to get it right. Even though I plan to use this in my EDC rotation, I shouldn't have had to tweak it. C'mon...no joke, wouldn't lock outta the box after at least 50 tries (I'm a determined monkey) and the play was over 1/8" at the tip.

BTW, my 889SBMF is rock solid in all regards and I could have bougt three more of those for the 889LE.

This is gonna sound insane, but I am thinking of ordering another 889LE to display on the shelf instead of the Elvis plate. Part of the reason is for Buck redemption in that I must've gotten a rare lemon. Plus, as stated, this will be a user and I'd like one to save for whateve the reason is we save these for.

That's it for now...
Agent Orange.
Over and out.

I'm glad you gave it a tune up Goose, you shouldn't have had to though...
Does it also stay locked? Or can you spine whack it on your pinky to disengage it???
Good luck with the second one! I hope it aint a slip joint!!!!!!!!!:D

Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me Jim: it stays locked. BUT I think I should send it to Messy, Certified Blade Spine Whacker.

After viewing all posts here, I've decided...I'd rather have the Elvis plate... :)

No fooling: I want one of those hideous Elvis The Matador on black velvet wall coverings...If anyone knows where I can get one, please email me... ;)

I looked at the bushing and it's hard to say Mike. I was wondering if that was FUBAR'ed. Comparing it to my 889SBMF, it looks the same so far as width and positioning. But a litte bit of tolerance off can make a big diff.
Guess I will never know as I will be keeping this now.

EDIT: So, here is my pillockian question for Mike or anyone else that has a 889SBMF or LE. What if the pivot torx "accidently" were to come completely loose? Is it as simple as putting the two bushings back in or are there other pieces I'd have to consider to put back in operation?

Trax, sorry about all the pics in this thread. I hope all the bandwidth didn't cut into your Elvis art allotment. ;)

Answer to my own question: No, that's it. Two bushings. Cleaned off some sticky black goop on one of the bushings. Knife back together and operational.

   Not sure I'm following you here goose....is it working fine now?????

Yes...after field stripping, it is working fine now gents.

I took off the blade and worked that burr on the tang butt a bit more. This took care of the liner lock not being able to sweep across to engage with the blade butt.

Also cleaned off one of the bushings that was had a fairly thick film of black goop on it. This seemed to help fix the blade wobble significantly.

So easy, a Goose can do it.

Glad to hear you whipped that puppy back into shape Goose. Still sorry though that you had to do anything but just enjoy the knife right out of the box. After all you didn't buy a fixer-upper.
Now that it is working as advertised I hope you like it as much as I like mine.
Good luck with it.....Mike

Yeah nice to see a happy Goose..

Damn its a shame knives like that just ain't available in the UK. Yeah you can buy from E-pray. Plus you have nice forumites too... :) but its a kicker and you live in the UK and you have to ship something back. I admit with Buck its always been a pleasure... but some of the other knife manufacturer's has been a nightmare to deal with

Hey MikeSEA, I'm thinking you were dead on about the bushing. It had some gunk on it. Like a sealant or glue. It was splattered on enough that I think it was impacting the blade play. When I cleaned it up and put it back together I was able to stop the play and still have smooth operation. Couldn't do that before.

Here are the pics:

I'm sure glad that you persevered Goose. Looks like the lock tweaking was successful. Are you happy with the quality of the lock-up?

Look..... Goose... send it to me and I will make sure that its ok... trust me..

Yes, Mike, I am a happy camper now.
I almost had a "Messy Moment" last night when I was working on it though.
Guess it's a Hawai'i thing...I don't wear shoes in the house. While I was working on the fixed up knife, it fell out of my hand, point first, into the carpet as it grazed my big toe.
That would've left a mark I'm sure.

And Mav, I am hesitant to send anything WU after what happened to our brother John!!!! Thanks for the kind offer though.

First of all, I'm not patting myself on the back on how great Buck is. They are a great company...but some things fall through the cracks.
And I am one of the first to state if the emperor has no clothes. Just glad Joe wears clothes (he does a great job).

ANYWAY, I received a second 889LE. Two reasons for getting a second one.
First, I wanted one to EDC for dress up day as opposed to my 889SBMF.
Second, wanted to see if the lock is a problem on this one like my first one, or if there were other issues.

The second unit is oakie doke. More character in the ironwood. It locks and stays locked.

The one difference in the form/fit/function category is where the liner lock mates with the blade. On the first one, there is a notch, or step, for the liner lock to settle into. On the second one, there is no notch...just the same type of angled butt of the blade/tang as the 889SBMF.

Here's the post with the pic of the first one (with the notch):
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4420716&postcount=75

So, I will use the one with the notch and that I adjusted (#228) and keep the newer one (#200) as a trophy wife.

Over and Out.
