New Case Swayback

Got the Bermuda Green Swayback from the post-office just now. Overall, very well-finished indeed as is usual with CASE (in my exp)

PROS

It's a Barehead model and I'm partial to this kind of knife.
Scale colour is very nice indeed although not quite as good as the pocket worn Slimline Trapper I have.
Very good price on e-bay 40 dollars.
Good spring, very good fit&finish no gaps or wobble,no rough edges, feels excellent in the hand.
Tin is worthwhile too.
Good to see a new pattern.
Wharncliffe!

CONS

It IS smaller than I imagined and slimmer(that's no bad thing) I thought it would be Mini Trapper size&weight. Kind of mega Peanut. The larger hand won't fancy this knife too much, so Yetis steer clear
I can't see any swedge on this knife! The blade slims down and tapers like all blades, but swedge? Not under my magnifying glass.....

CV model? Yes probably.

My Green Swayback arrived today, it is very nice. Flush spring at all three positions on both blades, came hair popping sharp (though I still gave it a few strokes ona very fine ceramic rod, just on general principle!), the bolster to scale fit is perfect, grinds are very even. The size is perfect for my uses, bigger than my peanut, smaller than my copperhead. Handle shape is very comfortable. The blade pattern (wharncliff main, spear small) is really perfect for me.

The only cons are the dye job on the scales is pretty uneven (one side is a deep even green, the other is splotchy and totally white in spots) and a barely noticable swedge.

While I am in for a CV stag (or whatever it is offered in) swayback, I actually like Case's stainless. It is easy to sharpen to a very keen edge.

Overall, a great knife destined for EDC use. It is actually sucha great size, that it could push my peanut aside on weekdays as an office knife.

I just received an e-mail reply from Case Customer relations:

"Currently there are no plans for a CV Swayback jack, but who knows in the future."

Hi Wintermute,

From what I understand, there is talk of doing the swayback in CV next year, but that's as far as it has gone to date.

As for the SFO swayback in CV, there's a meeting coming up between the dealer and Case where this will be explored. I'll let everyone know more when I know more.

Mike, are you free to mention the dealer? I'd love to get my hands on a well-built production swayback in CV enough that the color wouldn't even matter to me. Bone or stag would be nice though. This is a pattern you don't see every day in a production folder.

Just got my Bermuda Green Swayback today. This one has swedges on both blades. The blades are sharp and well centered, no hot edges.

One of the nicest production Case slipjoints I've owned, call me pleased :)

Has anyone got a Case Sway Back Gent knife yet? If so, do you like it?
Your post is the first I've heard of it, but by looking at the ones at Shepherd Hills it looks like the pattern as being discussed here, minus the pen blade. This would make it little thinner overall (single spring width), and the Rogers bone they're offering looks pretty good in the pictures.

Still, $65 for a small (and in this case, single blade) Case knife just seems high to me. I suppose I'm still a little torqued over my $100 stag version not having blade swedges, but I expect more for my money from Case.

So the word is that Case likes to wait a year after a pattern has come out before doing a special factory order for one of its dealers. Looks like we'll have at least a year wait for a SFO swayback in CV.

Nothing new to add on whether Case will be doing its own run of CV swaybacks.

The usual myopia. There was talk of making the CV version part of the standard inventory but now nobody seems to know anything about it.

Well, I for one love the Case knives in my collection, both old and new, but I won't sit on my butt waiting around for them to make what I (we) want.

If they won't supply 'em, others will, both production and custom.

There's nothing special about the blade, is there? They can't just take a standard production CV blade and put it in the swayback pattern? Doesn't sound like rocket science to me. I would buy either the gent's or the 2-blade jack version. I'm not picky about the version, I just like the pattern and CV steel.

I can certainly understand everyone's frustration to some degree, but the swayback jack came out in June and the gent's knife came out last week, so I don't think we can expect Case to drop everything to make us either in CV right away. :) I'm sure Case would like to get the most out of its current runs.

The plus side, at least for me, is that Case hasn't said no to either a SFO swayback in CV or as a production run. I know people at Case drop by BF on occasion, so maybe we'll still get either at some point.

Mikey...such a diplomat. Quick, let me go find a chair before I faint. ;)

(Your points are well taken, of course.)

I'm not sure that particular size Wharncliff is used on anything else at this time.

Another aspect is that Case is on record as saying they "cannot" make a CV Wharncliff blade for the Seahorse Whittler, something people have been clamoring for for years. If they "can't" make that one in CV then what bizarre forces are at work in the universe that will allow them to make the smaller one for the Sway Back?
