Ok I own several sharp tools from this company, good stuff (most of it from late 80s and 90's, but...), that I use almost every day in my line of work, but please try and convince me of the merit of the new Survival Edge from Cold Steel (check under new for 2012 stuff on their website)...

and looks aren't everything to me, but, gaaaaad.....looks like a Mora and an I-don't-know-what-but-I-hope-I-never-see-one had a baby...
The added fire steel is a nice touch.

(like the Lone Star Hunter-wish it was better steel- and that Jungle Machete looks handy)

Looks okay to me, the waterproof handle compartment is a nice touch to stash some tinder, fish hooks, line etc....can't see it standing up to much abuse but for a cheap, light knife it looks okay !

I don't see anything in the design that sells it to me although to others there may be some merit in that it looks like it could be made to float. I'd do better with a nylon Victorinox kitchen knife than that.

A poor solution to a problem that does not exist. Inherently weak design. Truly modest steel for blade. Double guard not my cup of tea for a tool.

At first glance, I hate it. But I do still have a soft spot for hollow handles (even though I don't own any anymore). It reminds me of one of the old Lifeknife ones that had a bulbous handle designed to float. The best knife CS ever made (IMO) was the Master Hunter in Carbon V, now there's a knife that I miss.

Hadn't seen or heard about it till I saw this thread (which needs pics):

Definitely looks like a copy of a Mora complete with the same crappy little sheath. Pricewise with the firesteel it's so close to a Mora "survival" kit that I don't know why anyone would choose this instead. First thing that comes to mind... after "looks like a Mora" is this would be a great "Boy Scout" knife. If I would've gotten one of these as a kid it would've been awesome.;)

"Mall Ninja" rep? Hmmmm............ Mallcraft?

I agree with tknife in that within the CS line the Master Hunter is a far better bit of design. In fact that is in my top few list of favourite field knives, period. That's not a fair fight though 'cos they are much more expensive. Not that I'd want one of those either but CS own Finn Bear and Pendleton Lite Hunters hunters are on a par in terms of materials and price and I'd sooner have either of those. Although I approve of the nod towards the wet with grime and slime of real world use it seems to draw too much on some sort of dive knife handle, or more harshly a Star Wars oyster shucker. Broadening out from the CS range and looking for a neo-bushcraft knife to augment a heavier cutter and I could have 10 Moras or about the same amount amount of Hultasfors for what this cost with no significant depreciation in quality. As a stand alone knife for survival and the little Magnum Camp Bowie [Becker looking thing made under license] would offer me more for less. And then there's a personal favourite in form of a Blackjack Grunt that would slaughter all this lot as a stand alone survival knife, and more.

Although it does look a little odd, I'm looking forward to seeing some actual hands on reports.
I'm especially curiuous to see how CS has built the knife to attempt to overcome the strength issue that comes from the hollow handle. Firesteel nice also.
I don't like every knife CS has put out, but I haven't heard of alot of CS knives "failing" when it comes to strength.
The double guard is not totally preferrable, but I also can see that if it's marketed as a "survival" knife, that situation is one where a cut would just make matters worse.
CS does some interesting stuff.

Cmon - you can buy a mora/frosts for like 3-5$ online, or 15 if you want to choose or visit a shop.
Cold steel survival is ugly as hell, and this handle looks extremely uncomfortable.

And NO BATTONING for you, all survival fans :D

Blade profile is straight from Mora, which I like. However that handle looks like it could be very uncomfortable if used for a long time based on what I see of the computer generated rendering of this knife. Hollow handle is nice which is waterproof as someone mentioned but did it compromise strength. Sheath mora copy as well. I only have a few early reservations about it for one the guard...I know these knives are not beater hard use but that looks to break quick! And as I mentioned the handle. Without trying this knife I need to really bit my tongue but early observations and using a ton of other knives those issues I have are valid. Depending on street price I still like my Mora 2000 and 2010 a ton, cleaning game and fish they are really good! But they do more than food...feather stick...awesome..you cant baton or chop with it but that makes up a small % of stuff I do with a knife.

Remember that $45 is the MSRP of the piece. MSRP for the Mora Bushcraft Survival is up around $70. There's a lot about this piece I don't like but something tells me it'll do just fine for the tasks it was designed to handle.

I hear ya, but my Mora 2000 and Mora 2010 where 20 bucks...pretty cheap.

Oh--I agree! I'm just saying that if you take about $10 off the price tag for the cost of the firesteel then figure what the street price will be you're talking a similar price range. I'd still take a Mora any day though.
