New Cold Steel "Survival" knife

Cmon - you can buy a mora/frosts for like 3-5$ online, or 15 if you want to choose or visit a shop.
Cold steel survival is ugly as hell, and this handle looks extremely uncomfortable.

And NO BATTONING for you, all survival fans :D

Are you sure you are talking about Moras and not frost cutlery? I can't find Moras for $5 or less anywhere online...

Hadn't seen or heard about it till I saw this thread (which needs pics):

Definitely looks like a copy of a Mora complete with the same crappy little sheath. Pricewise with the firesteel it's so close to a Mora "survival" kit that I don't know why anyone would choose this instead. First thing that comes to mind... after "looks like a Mora" is this would be a great "Boy Scout" knife. If I would've gotten one of these as a kid it would've been awesome.;)

Eli

"Mall Ninja" rep? Hmmmm............ Mallcraft?

Mallcraft? Ha ha! Yes Folks, we heard it here 1st - the new moniker for inexpensive, clam-shell 'sold-in-malls' Bushcraft knives - "Mallcraft"

It looks like the handle would snap off right at the guard with the least bit of twisting..... No thanks - at *any* price (even free!). I certainly wouldn't give one to my children or a Scout. Imagine it breaking at the very moment of need... No thanks!

My guess is that the handle is solid from the guard up to the first O ring. In which case it probably has a tang the same size as a Mora 760.

Any difference in real use? Similar if not the same steel, scandi grind, plastic handle, crappy sheath :D
In Poland you can get great Mora 711 for 9$, Frosts and Futfors sometimes for less than 3$. And $ means here more than in US :D

Yes, there is a large difference. I wouldn't trust a Frost Cutlery blade, and I trust Mora. I've seen several Frost Cutlery knives break with barely any use, and I have beaten a mora and it hasn't as much as chipped yet. I can get Moras for $9, but no where for $5.

If the blade attachment is at all decent, it is not a bad piece. The price listed won't be the actual price though, it will be cheaper in reality.

Add in the fire steel, and I think it might be a decent "value" at 20 or so.

Their bushman is a much more solid piece of survival knife for sure! Though the handle is not water tight, and you would have to make your own plug. It is a tough carbon steel, near impossible to break construction.

If I was buying for one of my scouts, I would get them one of the all steel bushman.

I'm just surprised that they didn't just mold over a Bushman-style tang. That would have made for a rock-solid knife.

Reading the description you are probably right, I doubt they are as delicate as people think.

"Survival Edge
Cold Steel has been determined to bring an economical hollow handle survival knife to market for years. Most knives of this kind (that are currently available) have proven, in our own tests, to be too weak and fragile to be of any real use—and expensive too! In short, we thought we could do better.

Many years of experience with super-tough plastics and injection molding have given Cold Steel an edge over our competition's clumsy offerings. Our Survival Edge is butterfly light and strong as an ox and features a German 4116 Stainless Steel blade that is a full 1" wide and 5" long and terminates in a strong clip point that's versatile enough to meet the demands of ANY survival situation.

The handle is made from the highest-grade Polypropylene available, and has an integral double quillon guard that serves to protect the fingers as well as making it possible to lash the handle to a stick to make an improvised spear. The surface is carefully textured and encircled by 5 rubber "O" rings to improve traction when your hands are wet or slippery and to resist rolling or turning during intense use. Plus, a twist of the waterproof cap at the hollow handle's end reveals a large expanse that will accept a variety of survival aids or tinder.

The Secure-Ex sheath is designed to fit on most belts or be slung on a lanyard around one's neck. It's light, tough, and weatherproof. Additionally, it includes a Ferrocerium fire steel. A swift strike using the blade's spine will produce a shower of white-hot sparks and start a campfire roaring in no time at all. "

I think he is talking about Frosts of Sweden

I just got Frost Cutlery because of the $3-5 thing. Maybe he is talking about Frosts of Sweden, although I haven't heard that in 2-3 years. (The name, that is)

Frosts of Sweden merged with K.J. Eriksson to form Mora of Sweden. So that's why. :)

I wouldn't hesitate to buy one for $20. But i'd guess they will go for $40+.
How does the 4116 compare to the 12C27? And how thick is the blade?

It looks cool to me. Not really my style, but it looks fully functional. My guess is that it is as tough as any short tang Mora. I like the idea of the hollow handle...something that has always been cool with me. This is not a sharpened crowbar, and I bet its not gonna survive that kind of use, just like my Mora's wouldn't.

Pretty much my thoughts. Use like you would a Mora and it's going to be fine. Essentially a Mora with a hollow handle and a firesteel. Actually looks like it'll be a fair value, though only time will tell. I'll probably get one just to mess around with and see if it's worth carrying or not. I don't like everything about it and I'm not enamored with hollow handled knives, but this particular knife seems mostly ok to me.

Ha, it's more or less a copy of the old Lifeknife model that came out in the 80's. Nice sheath, though.
