New Cold Steel "Survival" knife

I like it as a "star wars oyster knife," but not for bushcraft, or mallcraft. It screams Made in China. Might as well have a fortune cookie handle.

If they made this thing full tand and made the sheath with a waterproof compartment I would be impressed. ( WOW that is a good idea.) As is I don't see any real use for this toy. I might buy one for my 8 year old girl and let her play with it after I dull the edge and point, Maybe, NO probably not.

I dunno it doesn't look much worse than a Mora, 4116 Krupp ain't great but it's no worse than 420HC,12C27 or X55CrMoV15, it comes with a flint for fire starting which a Mora does not and it seems like it's fairly light to carry, I may pick one up

I generally agree with you. I'm reserving final judgment until I actually see one in person, but I'm cautiously optimistic about this knife. This coming from a guy who doesn't care for double guards or hollow handles. Or even firesteels attached to sheaths.

Honestly I've always considered it fishy they call it Krupp 4116 instead of simply 1.4116 which it is. AFAIK it's considered a 440A analog.
Anyway I rate 12C27 quite high.

That said yeah, steel type is not the whole story.

Why is everybody so quick to judge an item that probably isn't even in production yet. Might be nicer than a mora, could have an industructable plastic handle that will take being ran over with a truck we don't know yet. Hell we havent even see real pictures of the thing those are computer renderings of the knife. If it doesn't measure up it might be cancelled like a few other past Cold Steel items that the factorys couldnt get right. If it's junk we tend to find out here first and I'm sure it will be hammered and ran over and batoned and reported when it comes out so don't worry about it.

Agreed. And it's actually kind of nice seeing a hollow handle being used on a knife that invites light use rather than hammering and prying etc. This one is more likely to be used like a large Mora, which folks tend to be, if anything, overly cautious with.

Cmon - you can buy a mora/frosts for like 3-5$ online, or 15 if you want to choose or visit a shop.
Cold steel survival is ugly as hell, and this handle looks extremely uncomfortable.

And NO BATTONING for you, all survival fans :D

though he was being pretty careful, it is still batoning.
personally I would rather have a 1095 machete
or 2 mora's for $25

I actually got a couple in back when they were released to see if I would like 'em. I didn't. They're a poor value in my opinion. They could have been good but the translation of concept to product is poor. Sharp edges on the plastic, floppy polymer on the sheath...blade wasn't really that sharp either. Not impressed at all and I refuse to offer them in my shop as a result. I had high hopes but totally got let down on this one.

I gave up on having "high hopes" for anything with the Cold Steel name on it a long time ago. They have their niche, but when I buy a knife these days, the fact that it's inexpensive is not on my short list of criteria. And that's not because I have a lot of money laying around (far from it, actually), but simply because I've learned the hard way that it's almost always cheaper in the long run to spend more upfront and buy quality.

As an aside, I have to say that the "cheap survival knife" phenomenon cracks me up. True "survival" isn't camping, or bushcrafting or farting around in the woods. It's finding yourself in a life or death situation. That's not the time to find out that you saved a couple bucks and unfortunately "got what you paid for." Buy the best, most reliable knife you can possibly afford. Sure there are some examples of inexpensive knives that are surprisingly functional, and there are some really expensive knives that are a joke, but in general, if survival is what I'm really preparing for, I'm not thinking about staking my life on a "bargain."

Yeah the term "survival" was definitely only a marketing buzzword in this case. But it could have been a nice li'll bushcrafting/woods bumming blade at a fair price if they hadn't botched it with some of the design elements and execution. I can say, however, that the new sheaths for the Bushman knives are pretty impressive and I like 'em so far.
