New Council Pack-Axe series, Woodcraft line of axes

Eh--the Swedish makers are drop-forging as well, they're just using open-die forging instead of closed-die.

I'm not commenting so much on the manufacturing process or even which is a better tool. I have no standing to make such a judgement. I'm commenting more on the look and feel.

Oh I got what you were getting at. I was just disentangling the aesthetic aspect from the manufacturing method. :)

Sales of the Pack Axes has been steady... I'd like to think that people appreciate the performance of the axe and what they can do with it, more so than how it looks....although,form often follows function, and every design element of the Pack Axe has a purpose.... There are plenty of videos on-line that show it in action... I'd encourage anyone who is curious about it should get a hold of one and see what it can do "under load" ...

Peace, Rooster

Id like to get one to do a grinding torture video test to reproduce 10 - 15 years of regular use and see how the edge geometry turn out. Dont have that kind of money to blow unfortunatly.

Am I missing something? After 10-15 years of regular use wouldn't any axe need to be thinned? I'm not grinding away 1/2" on any blade I've ever seen without some sort of regrind of the primary.

Rooster, It is such a treat to see the axes being used. Great job! I used a 2 1/4 lb boys axe with a 19" haft for about 55 years of log building and timber framing. Your axe is very similar. Keep the pictures and videos coming.

The axe was designed to do many tasks, but not to be the best at any of them...it's an all-around... that's one of the reasons that it is offered on two different handle lengths... just by adding a few more inches in haft, it acts, feels and performs as if they are two completely different axes... the 25 deg. flat grind allows for some nice carving and shaving tasks, the cheeks and phantom bevels help with felling larger trees or limbing heavy branches where a blade will get stuck on the first few swings to open the notch...

Peace, Rooster

Rooster, does it come with a Scandi grind, or a Flat grind? Also, don't you tend to re-profile your edges to convex?

EDITED: I am "House of Horst" over on BCUSA.

It's both haha.

If you freehand sharpen it convexs the bevel naturally over time
