New EDC and I'm lost

Another vote for Native 5! My favorite spydie by far. Carry it almost every day. G-10 variant if you can find it, but there's also a LW FRN version that has the same steel and easier to come by.

What draws me to the sage is the size and the carbon fiber handles. I think what drives me away from the delica is the handles.

I've now experienced two different locks when it comes to the more intricate folders. The axis lock and frame lock. I don't know that I prefer one more than the other. I've carried some keychain Case knives also but the end up in a drawer because they take up too much space on my keychain.

There are a lot of gun and knife shows that go on where I live. Probably my best bet. I've checked out a few gun stores with very limited success. But I'll try to see what I can find in the coming days/weeks.

I like the look of the caly3 also. I do wish I could hold all of these options. I'm probably stressing over this too much, a lot of good perspective in this thread. I appreciate what I've read this far.

It's all been a mix of this forum, Amazon, youtube, wash and repeat.

...I think....at least not sure whether I'm on the right track.

About two years ago I lost my Benchmade mini-grip. I enjoyed that knife a lot, but had chipped the tip of the blade so I thought if I was going to spend 80 and lose it....try something cheaper but easily recommended. That led me to the Kershaw Leek. I got it for around $40 and it's been a decent knife now for almost two years. Well the clip has deteriorated and I've been rough with it, I've been updating a lot of my EDC gear and I'm thinking about buying a new knife.

So here I am.

I feel like I'm doing it right this time. I've joined this site, watched a ton of videos, read up on what's good, steel, edge retention, ergonomics, design....that brought me to spyderco. At first I was thinking the delica was my best bet, but I kept thinking that perhaps I should splurge a little. I've kept my leek without issue, maybe I need something worth that $100-120 price tag.

At this moment, the sure bet seems to be the paramilitary 2. But it almost looks too big. On top of that - I can't find it anywhere. When does spyderco usually release their new year supply? Then I found myself looking at the manix 2 but I believe that will be a bit heavy. Then I found the sage1 and other than the Taiwan build, it really catches my eye. Good for office carry but good for every other EDC scenario without end of the world connotations.

I'm looking for a push in the right direction. I'm not a collector. I buy it to use it. I don't want a choice. I want the "one" that I can carry all day every day without worry.

My apologies if this is one of those "here we go again" threads. Some boards eat it up, others would rather you just search. I enjoy the interaction so hopefully I'm in the right place.

Thanks,

JD

The Sage 1 makes an excellent EDC knife. Yes, it's made in Taiwan. Yes, it's a linerlock. And you will be amazed at the quality. Flawless fit and finish. Perfect size for everyday carry, scalpel sharp S30V steel, solid construction and lockup. Again, flawless. Spydercos coming out of the Taichung factory are top notch, and I can guarantee you will not regret getting a Sage 1.

I've got several nice folders from ZT spyderco and benchmade, and I will tell you the fit and finish on the sage is top notch. It makes a great EDC and very nice for office carry as well. Now, with all that being said, there is one downside to the sage. It was the knife that got me started down a slippery of buying /wanting more knives. You have been warned.

I say Native 5. For me it's the perfect EDC folder. I have the G10 version which can be hard to come by, but you can find the FRN model easily and for under $100. The S35VN seems to be good stuff, too. Mine has seen a good bit of use lately and just a few swipes on my DMT steel and a few minutes of stropping has it back to hair whittling sharp.

If you've been carrying a mini grip and leek, the PM2 is going to feel too big, for sure.

The Native 5 G10, FRN Delica, Caly 3 CF, and Sage 1 would all be excellent choices. Given that you seem to be rough with your knives, the Native 5 would probably the best choice. That said, you NEED a delica, so plan to buy one of those too ; )

That's what I'm saying. Totally agree.
Might throw a Dice out there as well, especially if you like the flipper on your Kershaw.

What kind of knife laws do you have to contend with?
I love the PM2 but it is a bit big for happy daily carry. I also have the Delica and I love the ergos and the size of the knife. It is simply right. The Endura is a great choice for a larger knife and still inexpensive. The Native 5 Light Weight is also a great knife.

I live in Indiana. Most knives I can carry.

Or he will suddenly realize the knives he has been carrying are a bit too small. That's actually exactly what happened to me when I moved from carrying a mini grip to pm2 and endura.

-if the pm2 is really too big then I would second all of your other choices...I just wouldn't rule out the pm2 because it's slightly larger than what the op has been carrying.

--to the op: If you can wait and hit one of those gun/knife shows and actually handle some of the different models discussed here then that would be the best option by far. :)

A great carry knife is the Dragonfly 2 in H1, It disappears in the change pocket of a pair of Levis, and you'll forget it even there. It''s almost like that little change pocket was made for it.

I believe when researching things, guns, knives, car stereos, you name it - I find something that catches my eye or the initial list of must haves and then I research anything that I don't like about the item until I've vetted every aspect. When I find a con - I generally go back to square one.

So far the Sage 1 has lasted the longest in this process. The photo you posted shows the beauty of that knife perfectly.

Can to buy the sage anywhere for less than $100? Amazon has it for $97. Does it dip any lower than that?

Para 2 is a bit big for EDC. Delica or Sage 1 "carbon" fiber. Amazon.com. If you don't like it send it back without questions. The Sage is a nice piece with S30V steel, same as the Para 2.

Amazon was where I bought my Sage from. I haven't seen it lower than $97 anywhere else. As long as the knife is being sold and shipped by Amazon and not a third party on Amazon, you're good to go. Amazon's return policy is simple and easy should you not be happy with the knife for whatever reason. Like I said, I bought my Sage 1 from Amazon and have no regrets. The knife came sealed and in pristine condition. In fact, I haven't seen another knife in such flawless condition right out of the box since I got my Chris Reeve Sebenza.

Well I did it.

Perhaps I'll find out this spyderco bites me and I end up with a whole drawer full of spyderco knives. We will see.

Sage 1 cost me $87 after using some Amazon reward points.

Good choice. Of course there weren't really any bad choices to make on the list you were looking at. ;)
