New EDC and I'm lost

The Sage was my very first higher quality EDC knife. it got me into collecting Spyderco knives specifically the Carbon fiber style ones. You will not be disappointed with this purchase.

Booom! Got it in the mail tonight. This knife is awesome. Bigger than I thought it would be.

Well I logged in just to tell you that IMO (and many others), Taiwan - made spydercos are there best as far as fit and finish. Then I was going to tell you to get a Sage 1. When I clicked to the 3rd page of this thread I saw you already chose wisely! Enjoy the sage.

I just picked up a native 5 and it has kicked all my benchmades out of my pocket

I think you need at least 2 folders to rotate.

Also, is your Leek assisted opening? If it is and you are used to that or like that, many popular Spydercos in that size range are back/mid locks and will not open as quickly (but I wouldn't let this deter you honestly).

That said, if backlock is not a preference issue for you and you want to remain similar size to leek, go for a Caly 3 in my opinion. Will have so much more blade control than the leek. I just love the finger positioning. The deep carry wire clip is nice too. Super Blue is the way to go, but they are near impossible to find now.

Sage will be a good recommendation as well, just have to decide which version/lock is for you. Wish they had one with a compression lock.

Just be warned, the Delica is one that grows on you. Many are underwhelmed by them if they are new to them. I EDC a Super Blue Delica with WilkinsGrip, but that puts it way out of your ideal budget.

I love my PM2's, but not for EDC in my situation where I work indoors and often wear khakis.
Manix is same story. I have not used a Lightweight though, but my g10 version is quite heavy.

Can we see that knife? :D

All great suggestions. If you like the delica but want something more attractive have you looked at the titanium delica? You can find them for a little more then your 110 but talk about a great looking, functional edc! I am leaning towards it for my next Spyderco. I love the Military I have but some days I want something smaller. I usually pair it with a slip joint most days to cover all my bases.

Sure here's a quick pic of it with a BM555hg.

I kind of want another Super Blue Delica with a OD green or Coyote Tan Wilkins Grip, but the SB's are so damn expensive now to add the cost of another Wilkins...
I personally don't like metal grips quite as much, especially for EDC in the winter here, lol...

I don't know if you read the whole thread though, but he picked up a Sage already...

I ALWAYS have my Native in the back pocket. It is a wonderful, wonderful knife. Problem is I rarely end up pulling out my primary carry 'cause the N5 does it all.

My Sage 1 has been seeing more pocket time lately. Excellent choice. As alot of people have mentioned, PM2 and Delica 4 are other excellent choices. Then there's the Dragonfly 2, Ladybug 3, Stretch, Gayle Bradley, Chaparral, Endura 4, Manix 2...Spyderco how I love thee!

I don't have the extensive experience that many of the guys here will bring to the discussion, but my two cents would be:

1. The PM2 is everything it's hyped up to be, but it's a bigger knife. If you don't mind the size increase, you'll do well.

2. The Native is my personal favorite, because it combines everything that makes Spyderco so good. The blade is a perfect EDC size (3 inches, 2.5-ish cutting edge), the ergos are amazing (I fondle mine all the time), the lockup is crazy solid, and the steel is excellent. You can get it in LW for under $100. The G10 is harder to find, but one pops up on the exchange here about every day.

Honestly, I'd find a dealer and fondle them if you can. Really the only true way to know if you like the way a knife feels/handles.

^This!
At some point you need to get your hands on a PM2 though. The compression lock is the best lock for edc in my opinion.
If you go the PM2 route and find the blade a bit long you could always shorten it by dropping the spine, making more a leaf shaped blade like the manix 2.

This one is shortened to 3"

I actually prefer the original blade shape but not the length. I hope someday Spyderco will make a smaller version of the Paramilitary 2. Until then this is as close to perfection as it get for me.

*One more note; if you haven't experienced the 50/50 finger choil on an edc knife then you need to give it a try. I didn't know what they were early on and now they are a requirement for my edc.

Another plug for the Native 5. I love my PM2, but it really is bigger than I need for daily use. I have the G10 Native and it is just about perfect.

I was in the exact same boat a couple years ago as the OP. Had some beater knives (Gerbers) and then somehow was introduced to the fact that there are different steels (seriously, I did not really know that there was anything other that "stainless" and "non-stainless" steel) and EDC'ing. I figured I would do my research and buy "the one" perfect knife for me that I would use all the time ... and bought a blacked-out PM 2 in S30V.

Absolutely love the knife, but learned a hard lesson in knife addiction (and Spyderco addiction in particular). I now have 5 Spydies and the 6th is on the way as I write this ... as folks have noted, the perfect knife changes based on the perfect use. My EDC knife size has continually dropped over time, from the PM2, to the Domino, and now the Chaparral. Who knows where it will go from there? Congrats on the Sage purchase ... it's making me want one.

I think I could live happily with "only" my CF Chaparral......absolutely love the little guy.

Bigger or wider? The length is fine for me, but the classic Spyderco leaf shape requires quite a bit of real estate to incorporate the Spyderhole. Having said that, I love the Sage series and consider Sages to be some of the best bang-for-the-buck knives available. You made a wise decision.

Pretty much wider and longer compared to my Kershaw Leek. After having it now for a few days, I'm accustomed to the size of the knife. It carries well. I carry a wallet, flashlight and keys with the knife in one pocket. No issues doing that. One thing I was hoping would make a difference was the feel of the textured carbon fiber. It is excellent.

I'm very impressed with this knife.

Funny thing is, the Sage 1 is only 1/8" longer than the Leek. It's the width and thickness of the Sage that's fooling you. Put them side by side and you'll see.

If you're looking for a good spyderco to edc, I really think the spyderco paramilitary 2. I'm actually about to buy It. And you can find them on Amazon or eBay, and usually you want to be weary about buying quality knives online (unless directly off the site) but honestly, no one is going to fake a para 2. They fake higher end knives like lionspy.

Anyways, I've heard nothing bad about the para 2. And my friend let me hold his and mess around with it. I love it. I don't think it's too big at all. In my opinion I'd consider it a full size edc. Not a oversized edc like some of the others have mentioned.

But I would also look into the native, And delica 4. They're better for edc.

But honestly, if you want a beater edc, meaning you want to use it and abuse it, I'd go for The spyderco tenacious. Yes it's made overseas, but the quality control is there. When it comes to spyderco, the China origin does not equal poor quality or construction. Also, it uses 8cr13mov, which is China's version of aus 8 which is an average run of the mill steel.

But it's great to learn how to sharpen correctly, And you can get it hair shaving sharp. Its got g10 handles which is extremely durable, and has great grip even when wet. The jimping on the thumb ramp (jimping is a pattern in the steel to increase grip And prevent your thumb from slipping) and there's some jimping on the liner lock which doesn't really help grip, but it makes disengaging the lock a tad easier.

Its about $40 and is a great knife. Check YouTube. WeAllJuggleWithKnives, nutnfancy, blade hq, and even preparedmind101 have great videos and are very well known YouTube channels.

But if you'd rather spend more, of course the para 2 is a go to for many.
