New EDC (first post edit for more info)

I also have a Kershaw Cyclone that I like, but don't EDC because the M16 takes the precedent for me.

The one thing I do like about both of these knives, is the easy to open factor. They both have a knob on the back side that you use your pointer finger to open

There's a reason why the Buck 110 is a classic. Or if you want something else of good quality but low cost (and much lighter) you could do worse than one of the Ka-Bar Dozier folders.

Does it have to lock? If not, how about a nice SAK?

Benchmade, Spyderco, and Kershaw (including Zero Tolerance) are like the holy trinity of sub-$200 production folders. it's hard to go wrong with anything from those three. my vote goes to a Spyderco Para-Military 1 (since they can be found for cheaper now, and the para 2 is above your length requirement). if you want to go near 4", I recommend the Spyderco Military.

Spyderco Delica. Or maybe Spyderco Salt.

Delica: slightly heavier than the Salt because of the steel liners, VG-10 steel which is a great all round steel.

Spyderco Salt: corrosion is not going to be a problem because of the H1 steel (but edge retention is not as good as with VG-10 steel). Not a very sharp tip.

Both are excellent knives and a good choice for EDC.

I don't like the styling of the Spyderco knives. Right now I am thinking of these

-Kershaw Leek
-Kershaw Zing (Tanto Point)
-Benchmade 580 Barrage
-Benchmade 551 Griptilian

Spyderco Manix2 (actual size)

If you want something super tough that's not hard to sharpen try the Cold Steel triad lock knives.
New 2010 Recon has about a 4" blade
the new 2010 ak47 has about a 3 1/2" blade as does the american lawman
I believe that the Mini-ak47 and mini american lawman have 2 1/2-3" blades.
The Triad lock is being touted as the strongest lock ever built. Just make sure that the knife your buying is the new model with the Triad lock.

The cold steel knives have caught my eye, but they look super bulky.

I like the 2010 Recon1, as it moved the clip towards the top of the knife.
Anyone have personal experience with Cold Steel?

I own the new Recon 1 tanto. Its one hell of a knife for sure. I also prefer tip down carry, but I am dealing with tip up for the time being. (I may relocate the clip, but i need to figure out the size bit I will need)
How do I like it? I have plans to order the AK47, Lawman and another Recon 1. That should tell you something.
If you'd prefer a smaller knife try one of the mini's or the American lawman.

Sounds like you're looking for a slim knife? Try a Boker Trance or Hyper. Excellent quality for $30, both solid frame locks. To what you said about how you don't like the Spyderco styling, I know exactly what you mean. The first time I saw a Delica I thought it was the ugliest knife of all time. Now I own one and love it. It's incredibly ergonomic and light, although I do prefer thumbstuds to the Spyder hole.

Exactly.

Slim, no so much, as nothing else usually goes in my knife pocket.

My specs are as such:
-quality feel
-$100 or less
-locking
-strong when opened
-3"-4" blade
-hold an edge well
-ambidextrous thumb studs
-pocket clip

Preferred(but not mandatory)
-tip down carry.
-assisted opening
-flipper

People hate on SOG all the time, but this is my favorite knife that I own:

SOG-Vulcan-Mini-VL-02-600x510.jpg

The SOG Mini Vulcan. Sick looking recurve on the blade, VG-10 steel, highly textured and decently thick Zytel handles, Arc lock with flipper opening, deep carry pocket clip, and it opens smooth and fast with the thumbstuds, flipper, or Arc lock. Check it out.

Benchmade Griptillian all the way.

Basically indestructable

Lots of steel options

2 size options

multiple color options

Axis lock!

lotta knife for the money!
