New Fire Kit concept

I think you can get a scraper, a couple of condoms, a bottle of Viagra and two shots of Scotch in it!

What are condoms for? and I require at least -three- shots of scotch.

Some guy just posted on Facebook that our old kit was ugly. And as I responded, ugly is what Mike and I do best. Just look at us.

Has he seen your knives?

What is the point of the ferro rod? I understand that they are great for starting fires and are waterproof, but what makes them superior to a lighter?

Lighters aren't bombproof. They're plan A. Ferro rods are more work, but they're going to work every. single. time.

Just think of all the women you would attract though

Dear god this is a good thing?

I like the design. I'm going to have to go grease up a rod or two and see if they still work covered in vasoline. I'm pretty sure I was looking to preorder these before I even loaded the thread :)

Only downside I see in the design, is the lanyard hole becomes internal when you flip the rod. Not a huge deal, but it limits options. It'd require either a small lanyard to clip to something, or stuffing a long lanyard into the storage area. As I generally soak my tinder in jelly, that'd be out for me. Also doesn't let you neck the kit with it exposed and assembled. I'd make the cap on the compass end a little fatter, and mill the hole into that.

Also, I know right now I'm going to piggyback 2 kits, looks like the compass would let you do that. Could have one tube with the rod, and some dry jute or what not. Then remove the other rod, close with the second compass over all the PJCB's.

Do random color anno runs. You'll have idiots like TTD and myself buying every other week.

A really great survival item. I really like the non-exposed rod storage. Great thinking guys:thumbup:
I'll score a couple of these for sure.

Sounds like Keith Richards bathroom kit! BTW this is a great tool that will be going into my EDC/BOB .......

This will be in prouduction this Spring by Rowen. This is NOT replacing the old fire kit. It is simply a new product designed by Tom and ESEE.

Looks like a great idea. Look forward to getting them!

Looks really good. I agree with Dizwolf in that I think it'd be better if the lanyard attachment was on the outside of the ferro rod end as well as the compass for increased lanyard attachment options. More attachment points means less chance of losing the components.
Also, it's hard to see from the pic but will this version have the tips that were printed on the original?

How is the grip on the side? Just thinking if it get wet or your hand is big how one needs to hold on to it.
Ie is there going to be diamond pattern crosscutting on the two larger ridges toward center...just a suggestion.
Beyond that seems pretty cool looking foreword to dimensions.

I propose new tips

"if you knew how to read, you wouldn't be lost"
"what do you mean you didn't pack a cell phone?"
"This compass doesn't point north. but we're not trying to find north. we're trying to find cricketdave's hideout!"
"place left hand on right ear. place right hand on left ear. Pull hard and kiss your ass goodbye"

There looks to be more body room on this. I'd assume the real tips would fit just fine.

I bet this was already covered (sorry) but any chance of a clip or slight polygonal edging to keep it from rolling around?

oddly enough i was thinking about the existing firekit and thought of everything that the new kit has.

if youre worried about the ferro rod inside my idea was to wrap some jute around it. jute can be made into simple cordage or used as a tinder.

i didnt notice any rubber o-rings but im sure it will be water tight...i hope.

my guess on the dims are 1" diameter, ~4" long, ferro ~2"

i think its quite a good design...the current fire kit is a tad bit too small for my taste :o ...i might have to pick this one up! good job RAT team!

Hey I was going to make one of those on a lathe, but bills destoryed that idea.

Excellent, I will take two.....

I'm kinda confused...

What's the purpose of having the ferro rod screw into the container? The rod itself is waterproof...But it would only make it marginally smaller in your pack. Plus you couldn't really store anything in it with the ferro rod inside.

I like the idea, but it just looks like a bigger "container" version of the already made firesteel. I like it, and will buy one. Just throwing that out there. :)

I'm pretty sure that the idea behind this rod is that you wouldn't rip up stuff inside your pack with it and lower the chance of breaking a rather thin or heavy used rod. There were stories of small diameter rods that got caught in some stuff and just broke accidentally... The external rod of the old FireKit f.e. can loosen up in the housing over the time when you use it to attach the kit by rubber/ranger bands.

With this modular system YOU can decide which way to go :D
