From his last pic He means cutting up limes for his beer while sitting by the beach watching the rollerbladers

Please be careful down there :)

Yeah like London. You can't even take a locking blade of any size into that country. Only thing allowed are slip joints.

Well I am an Emerson guy. And Emerson people practice their WAVED knives all day long . They open every single time. So no worries about a folder not being opened under duress.
Under duress fine motor skills are gone. Muscle memory is what you will be depending on and that is less than 100%.

It’s a cool stilleto like knife, but with no wave for quick deployment a folder is not appropriate for self defense imho.

Because a knife without a wave feature just can't be considered a serious knife for defensive purposes.

Tell you who should fear the wave most... microbrews sans twist tops. :D

The stiletto shape is awesome, don't get me wrong. I simply love my ProTech Godson for all its pointy goodness.

But it doesn't make a good EDC for me, so I never carry it.

I would say that in most cases where you see the threat coming early enough to draw your folder and thumb it open; you would have been better served just running away.

The reason why I feel waved folders are the only ones viable for SD use is because they draw in the open position with a gross motor movement.

Even autos or assisteds are too fidgety for what I would want in those kinds of scenarios.

And that's fine.... for you. I wear shorts most of the time, or pack my knife in a coat pocket. Both of these carry methods render a wave feature useless. Believe me, I've carried an Emerson CQC7 with a wave, and it was never "waved" open the entire time I owned it. I honestly consider it more of a gimmick on knives than anything.

But I realize there are folks that swear by it, and that's just fine. But I don't think it's an end-all-be-all requirement for SD folders.

Sorry to get off track

The OP did ask about folders not fixed blades so here are a few of my favorites

DISKIN FIRE

COMPOUND GRIND

Max blade to handle ratio

DISKIN FLIPPER

New DISKIN DA

My favorite

Durand

Look at the spine and blade transition

Handle shape is awesome

Marfione custom Combat Troodan

When blade is retracted makes an awesome impact weapon and does open quickly if need be

So the point would be to extract the knife when there is a threat and keep closed to use as an impact weapon that can be deployed if need be quickly

For a prouduction piece the old Spyderco Szabofly

Kizer John Grey Pocket Brute pimped by John

Last but not least my favorite factory waved folder and I have a bunch of Emerson’s .....the cold steel Talwar :)

But even this can be improved on in a fixed blade :)

It’s no more of a gimmick than thumbstuds are. It definitely isn’t 100% necessary for SD with a folder hut I think it is a huge advantage to be able to draw a folder as fast as a fixed blade.

Infact depending on what I’m wearing I can sometimes draw my waved knives faster than a fixed blade. This is because to get at my fixed blade which I wear IWB I have to lift my shirt out of the way. Even worse if I’m wearing a sweater and worse yet a heavy jacket.

About 12x per day

Jeez dude, at that rate I'd be more worried about heart attacks than muggings. Once more I am happy that self defense, home defense or anything of that nature crosses my mind once a year at best. (And I am not being sarcastic or ragging on you, it's just hard to imagine for somebody from a safe, pretty much crime free city to live like that. Our local police station has office hours twice a week because nothing happens, the closest "busy" one is about 10 miles away and they speed over if need be for traffic accidents and such.)

I love my Spyderco Szabo. That thing is badass. One day I may have to grind the Spydie hole into a wave.

Btw Kizer just releases a production version of the Diskin flipper they are calling the Kizer Toro.

Ps: love that fixed blade Talwar.

 Wave opening is much less a fine motor skill than any other method besides an inertial opening maybe ? Or did you mean compared to a fixed blade ?

Besides , if you train seriously in SD part of it is to get stressed enough in training to mitigate the adrenaline shakes in a real situation . That's the theory anyway . Luckily ,I usually only get the shakes AFTER . Nerves of steel !

Kizer is doing a great job

I saw the proto of the DISKIN Flipper awhile back ....Matt had one ......it’s a winner

The Mirabile Tsunami is an insane piece

Really good point you made here.

IMO if you are worried about self defense/edc buy a good edc knife the pm2 or manix are both great! But then save up a little more and buy a gun... Im not an expert on knife fighting at all but its my understanding that if you plan on carrying a blade self defense, you need to at least look into some training. I have always said that no one wins in a knife fight, more than likely both are cutting to get cut up pretty good unless you know what you are doing, and if they have a bat or wearing thick clothing you might be SOL unless you are carrying a pocket sword.
I REALY hope that im not sounding like a know it all, I am just wanting to get that part out of the way first before I give any recommendations, I just feel some get an inflated idea of how using a knife for self defense will be.
But anyway! lol I would say anything long, sharp, easy to open, and with great grip will fill the roll nicely. PM2, manix, even better a full size military if you want a bigger knife. If you even just stick some one with a little spyderco dragonfly, they are definitely going to feel it.
My recodmendations would be the PM2 or a manix for are $130 then save up a little more and get a decent pistol.

when thinking about using a knife for self defense i always thought the scene in the departed would be the most likely scenario, you would have to use it to get the surprise on a person you thought was about to attack you, in this scene matt damon accidentally stabs a delivery guy with his kershaw whirlwind thinking it was someone after him

I have a few of Bens and I do believe they are the finest Hartsfield adaptations out there and since Phill is gone and his go for large amounts on the secondary market Ben is the way to go
Really want one of those Tendick blades.

You are an enabler:D

"but this goes back to if your that unaware of your surroundings that you need to be speed drawing your already in big trouble and than I would reall want a fixed blade"

I could not agree more.
