New GEC #14 Boys Knife

IMG_4111.jpg

Postman woke me up at 8am to bring me this (and a 15 Stainless in that wonderful Orange Winterbottom type bone)

Quick review. the build quality on this and the 15 is peerless, for an ordinary production knife it is truly remarkable. I can find no faults in either knife. Tight construction no gaps, flush springs in open/shut, great snap, no play, centred blade, the pin work is excellent all domed no horrible sink-hole. Many GECs have one pin that's a sink hole eyesore and for me this detracts from the quality feel. Not so with these and I've noticed the Barlow 14s all have fine domed pins too, hurrah! Backspring construction and bolster work both excellent.

Yet, I find the 14 too small for my personal tastes and I have small hands. It's the overall dimensions that count here, in terms of length it's OK and the blade/handle ratio is impressive nice long blade no undersized effort. But the width/breadth of the knife is too narrow and this makes for a pencil like feel to my mind. Glad I did not get a 14 Barlow as it would not have suited me at all. The 15 and 77 are the right size for the pattern, but I know a lot of people are pleased with theirs, good. Absolutely no doubting the quality here, simply wonderful, but the 15 is the right frame.

Thanks, Will

Those of you who got a natural canvas micarta...is the micarta just bare/plain, or is there some sort of finish on it? Hard to tell from the pics I've seen.

I would think it has a finish on it, otherwise it seems like it would stain easy. And anyone else thinks the two blade versions have the pen blade on the wrong side? The only two bladed knife I have is a Barlow with both nail nicks on the same side and blades opposite of the way the two bladed 14's have them.

If this was already posted here, my apologies, but let me please confirm: the steel of the bolsters, liners, and pins on the #14s is 1095 carbon?

Thanks,

Andrew

Got mine today, it came super dull but other than that a very nice knife

Looks good !
1 of the 2 I received wasn't very sharp either but didn't need to put it on my edge pro . All I did was hit it with some green compound on my leather strop and it was hair popping sharp .

Oh mine needed a full sharpening job the edges didn't even touch.

I believe the spring and I know the blade is 1095 (hardened and tempered differently). The bolsters and liners are mild steel (probably 1008). The bolsters/liners, spring, and blade will all scratch and patina at different rates. I love seeing the age occur differently in these ways!

Macchina,

Thanks for your reply. I had likewise thought the bolsters, liners, and pins on the #14 are carbon. Then I read on a dealer's website that they are stainless. I e-mailed Chris at GEC and she confirmed that the bolsters, liners, and pins are indeed stainless.

Maybe we were both thinking of the original #15s---weren't the bolsters, liners, and pins on those carbon, or is my memory even worse than I thought? :o

Andrew

This knife is just perfect! Love the weight of the two blade. Came very sharp with easy pulls. Thanks Barry!
