New Goddard

I really like the blade shape but the blade:handle ratio looks a bit low to me i.e. big handle, not so much blade...

That combined with the liner-less FRN might mean that I hold fire on this one.

Ben

Thanks for the heads up about the no liner. I was thinking about driving to my LKS. Saves me from a 30 min drive. Hmmmm what spydie to get next? Trans blue manix2?

For me this is closer to the classic Endura- same blade thickness, same FRN scales but the Endura packs slightly more blade into a slightly shorter, slimmer handle.

ZDP version probably next on my list...

Ben

I'm sure a snazzier set of scales would have made the price twice as snazzy, making it a potential deal breaker for a lot of people. The volcano grip texture is a functional masterpiece of a work knife.

I'm sorry, but I don't buy into that nicer scales means beaucoup upcharge. If that was the case, then all those G-10 versions of the Endura and Delica would be readily available for purchase. Folks are spending upwards of $75 and up for the upgraded G-10 Manbug without batting an eye. In my opinion, this new Goddard deserves a nicer set of scales, and if it means spending an extra street price of $30.00 or so for an upgraded model, I don't think many will protest. So far, on this forum and on a couple of others, I've heard the same story about the Delica G-10, the Rookie, and a host of other discontinued models....that they didn't sell. I'll believe that when I can find all those discontinued poor sellers readily available on the market.

You can believe whatever you like, the owner of Spyderco himself indicated such. I'd take Sal's word over internet speculation regarding his own products any day of the week. I don't disagree that some nicer handle materials would be in order, especially for a sprint, but it is what it isn't (in this case, it isn't g10).

If this had liners, it would be my perfect carry knife. On paper anyway. I have a UKPK and the lack of liners has not given me any problems. I cut cardboard, thick plastic zipties, and plastic straps. However, I always try to put the force on the sharpened edge and not on the side or spine of the blade. Hmmm, what to do?

NB Squashfan, that there is a big difference in the flex of the G10 vs FRN. FRN is significantly less rigid...

Just sayin'!

I think everyone worries a bit too much on the lack of liners in FRN knives. My first Spyderco was an Endura III that I beat the tar out of at work. I'm in the Nursery and Landscape field and it got to cut just about any type of strap, rope and tie down that you could think of. I don't use my folder to pry or baton and it did everything I could ask of it. The same goes for the Delica III that I carried alternatively and then the Native lightweight that I carried after that. I'm one of the ones that prefer the lighter feel and better grip texture of the FRN knives over other scale materials so I am biased but I just wanted to point out that they will hold up just fine under hard regular use.

Does the new one have liners? A knife that big, I would want liners for sure.

The new one is similar to the previous FRN sprints - no liners. The original micarta Goddard was constructed basically the same way - no liners and no washers. The construction is very solid and very lightweight for such a large knife. However, I would not chose this knife if I wanted to punch holes in the side of car doors or baton through rock maple...

Having said that - I love the series, in all three sizes and various handle materials.

I was able to hold one of these at the SFO this last weekend. ^ The above is what struck me. I was amazed how lightweight it was and how good it felt in hand.

that pic makes it look alot bigger than it really is. sometimes knives look huge in pics other times tiny its wierd. but its not as big as it looks in that pic especially the butt.

still a good knife without the liners but they should have put even partial ones nested in the FRN when you get longer with the FRN I think it is less stiff which is why it works linerless on smaller knifes but above Delica size they should be there.

My UKPK is the standard handle drop point model. Spyderco list it as having maroon FRN handles.

OK, guys, I need your help. Should I get this knife? I don't want it to be gone but am unsure about the toughness. Should I let the lack of liners be a deal breaker? I am not hard on my knives; I just use them to cut things.

I think you know the answer...

...of course you should get one! Given your uses & the overall high quality of Spydies I'm confident you'll love it.

Worst case scenario - you'll likely be able to move it on at very limited loss.

Let us know...

Ben

The Goddard will work just fine without liners. It's a cutting tool, and it's not made for prying or chopping. Treat it right, and it will most likely last you a lifetime.

yeah just get it. it will stand up to normal use and it is light as a feather. And hey ya know what? There are things i would personally change on a number of Spydies but i still carry them and love them as they are. Actually thats a lie I changed out the clip on my Millie to an STR and its great !!! :)
