*NGK has processed a refund to me before I even ship out the knife for return, I must say this level of customer service is unheard of just about anywhere online or otherwise*

The original venting:

I've purchased many Spydercos from New Graham Pharmacy in the past with no problems. This past Friday I was browsing their website and you can imagine my excitement when I saw "one" Sprint run Spyderco Shabaria for sale on their website since this Sprint run is difficult to find outside of ebay. So I promptly ordered it for full price. Well it arrived today and surprise surprise, to my dismay it appears used.

Update*** NGK is in the process of sending me a return shipping label and will process a full refund due to me, very good customer service. Although I posted this thread without waiting for a reply from NGK first, but I have repeatedly said in my posts that the knife "appears" used, and I have repeatedly said that I have no doubt that NGK will take care of the situation and that was not the purpose of my post.

However, it appears many on this forum have passed judgement on me for my expression of free speech, whatever happened to the old adage "the customer is always right"? There are even posts suggesting that I must have missed a "used" sign when ordering from NGK because of their stellar reputation, therefore I must be in the wrong.

I would like to thank all those that supported me but this thread has left a bad taste in my mouth. NGK has provided excellent customer serivce, although in this thread they failed to mention that in my email I asked first and foremost for "A REPLACEMENT", failing that I asked for the possibility of a discount or some sort of partial store credit. I have no qualms about returning the knife for a full refund.

The fact is, I bought a knife from NGK, it "APPEARS' used with pictures to prove it (what conclusion am I suppose to draw from scratches on the blade, corners of the pocket clip, LOTS OF LINT accumulation inside the frame, and a Delica label on the box?, and I did say appears used", NGK have provided excellent customer service, and I've certainly been "labeled" and lynched on this forum for "posting too early" even though the post is based on facts.

I can accept the explanation that this knife was damaged at the factory, that a Delica box was reused at the factory and labeled over, and that this sprint run of 800 knives is still for sale at a volume dealer 2 years after it was released and the knife bears all the signs of one that's seen pocket time with the lint accumulation inside the frame and worn corners on the pocket clip (i wiped off the lint on the blade when I opened the box). The knife looks MUCH WORSE in person as alot of the scratches doesn't show on the pic, maybe I should take better pics and ask Sal on the Spyderco forums how such a knife left their factory? I now feel the need to defend myself as my integrity is obviously under attack here.

But what can not be denied is the fact that I did receive this knife in this particular condition under these circumstances from NGK, and regardless of whether if I waited for their explanation or not does not change those facts. It has nothing to do with their reputation, my reputation, or people getting their panties in a bunch because their favorite knife dealer is under some kind of "unjust attack". The fact is this did occur and I don't see anything wrong with me posting a FACT.

Michael Dye, when you receive this knife back please inspect it and come back on this forum and inform us of your opinion on whether it appears used or not to you.

I emailed NGK and am waiting a reply from them. Have this ever happened to anyone? I will keep everyone updated to this situation, pictures will follow.

Personally, I would've waited on that Reply before posting here...

I would like to see pics as well. And not that I doubt you at all, but I'd like to see as well evidence of the purchase date. I have shopped/purchased from NGK many times, so this is very interesting to me. Thanks.

Yeah I agree. I think you should have let a reputable company give you an explanation before posting here! Maybe it was marked used and you overlooked it?

Here are a bunch of pics. Note in my receipt the date of purchase & price. Note on the box the yellow "delica" label beneath the Shabaria label. Note the scratches on both sides of the blade, only the vertical and corner scratches showed up, there are long horizontal scratches that does not catch light and didn't show up on the pics. Note the wearing on the corners of the pocket clip as well as a couple of light scratches. I'm just reporting a true buying experience, if they fix the situation i will accurately report the outcome, if they do not i will report that also. The fact is that they sold me an used knife. Go on their web page and look up the Shabaria, it will say out of stock. When I purchased this knife it says "1" in stock, no where on that page does it say it's a used knife. Is NGK in the business of selling used knives? That's news to me!

Yep, even if you didn't want to do them the courtesy (which you really should) think about it from a purely selfish point of view. You've posted this, dragged their name thru the mud, and now they have less of an incentive to take care of you. This forum should be a LAST resort. For example, if they didn't respond for a week or two then post here.

You make a good point sir, however it is a fact that a dissatisfied customer will be 20 times more likely to complain than a satisfied one to sing praises. I know I have lost bargaining power by posting this, but NGK can still remedy this by good customer service. If they choose not to it certainly is within their power, but if they do that then they will be doing a disservice to their own reputation.

I've spent close to $500 with them in the past few month, although not one of their big customer but definitely a regular repeat customer. I'm sure they will fix the situation for me and keep my business as I've never had a problem with them before.

The CF Shabaria is a grail knife I've been looking for, I'm sure you can all see how my excitement is crushed when I opened this package after finding it and then anxiously waiting all weekend, only to find a USED/DAMAGED knife that I paid full price for.

I'm more obviously venting and somewhat shocked by this experience, especially when it involves such an excellent company such as NGK.

I'd be really bummed out if someone posted a public complaint before they gave me a chance to respond. I can totally understand your frustration but give people a chance to make things right before going public. Just my two cents.

They will give you a refund if you aren't satisfied. What more do you want?

"Q6) What do I do if there is a problem or defect with the product I ordered?

Answer: If you are unhappy or your item(s) are defective, you may return them to us and we will refund or replace them. We do ask our customers to have respect and not abuse this policy, for example if you buy a knife and use it for 3 months or longer and then are unhappy with it, thats not really our fault, if you buy a product and use it and something happens to it, you should contact the manufacturer 1st, if you can not resolve an issue with them we will be happy to step in on your behalf. We reserve the right to make the call on this on a per incident basis.

Please contact the store to make arrangments for any returns"

I agree with the others. You should have contacted New Graham before posting here. I'm sure they have a lot of inventory and likely don't check every knife that they send out. Once derogatory comments are posted, it's too late.

an issue is still an issue. doesn't matter when OP posted about it - before or after contacting NGK. imo, forum is not a "last resort", but a place to discuss.
btw, OP asked here - "Have this ever happened to anyone?"

Well yeah, I've bought NIB knives before that had issues that required me to return them where I purchased them, that's why dealers generally have a customer satisfaction policy.

to some degree maybe you should have waited until they responded.. But still I would have been less than thrilled getting a knife in that condition.I know they have been around a forever but that should have never left the store. Being a knife collector I need to know about these things.

could it be display knife? you know, these, which buyers can hold in hand in knife shops or something.
BHQ is selling now such knives - few fixed ZT. because of minor scratches price is very nice.
