I'm a newbie to the forum and just finished building my grinder. Just wanted to show it off. I still need to make a stand for it and make room for it in my small shop. Direct drive 1 1/2 HP DC motor off eBay and free scrap steel. I had to buy the aluminum for the 8" drive wheel but most of the stuff was scrounged. Of course the attachment is from Beaumont Metal Works. I really enjoy all the information everyone shares here.

Thanks

Darrell

<-- jelous. If only my first post contained something as nice as that =D

Welcome, from another newbie to the forum

Man, this is one of the nicest home made grinders I have seen.

I like the simplistic design of it.

Looks like it should serve you well. Congrats on a job well done.

Nice design! My only concern, not knowing what I am doing, is the electrical connection. Is there any concern with stray metal particles getting inside? Steven

Hi Kelly,

I like things simple. I studied a number of grinders and this seemed like the way to go. No belts or pullies and I had the steel that fit the design. It's a quiet machine.

I'm not quite done with the motor controller yet. It is just set up for testing right now. I have had it running but will not be using it with wires hanging loose.

Darrell:)

Wow! how much did it cost you to build it? Looks very neat:thumbup:

Aluminum $50
Paint $5
Steel $0
Motor $125 (eBay)
Motor Controller $45 (eBay)
Springs, nuts, bolts, threaded rod, locking handle, etc. - all scrounged
Bearings for idler around $15
Attachment from Beaumont $420 (optional) You can make your own attachments.

I did the machining, welding and cutting myself.

Great Job! One suggestion would be to place the tension handle vertically. That way you will have better leverage in compressing the spring.
Nice work.

Fantastic:thumbup:! I wish I could have one like this myself! How long did it take you to put it all together?

Nice.......and let us know what you think of the rotary setup you have pictured.
