Damn Horn Dog...do you know who your neighbor is the spitting image of? An old friend of mine.

I bet you thought he had died or was living in Paraquay. Old soldiers live here. :D He does look a lot like your friend.

Great review HD, glad this one was flawless :D

Me too. I had been waiting on the HEST folder for months, and there had been delays. Getting one I could barely open was most distressing. But using a good one has set my mind at ease. It was worth the wait. I'm glad DPx has a good warranty.

I carried the HEST/F around today, showing it to several people who like knives. All were impressed. One young lady wants to buy one. She liked the idea of a bottle opener and glass breaker. She usually packs an automatic folder, so the price did not scare her at all. But then, she is a knife nut.

Question:
Does anyone know if the surface of the Ti framelock contacting the tang is hardened to reduce wear? Or is that not possible?

Looks cool. Not so crazy bout the blade coating but like the rest.

Cool beans HD, this is what I was hoping to hear. I have been edc-ing the fixed for some time, and I prefer small fixed to folders most of the time... but I really like the idea of a folding version for some things

I accidentally cut thru the paracord belt loop on my HEST fixed blade sheath and lost it for a few hours. I thought I had put it the blade back in the sheath, but did not. Fortunately, a friend found it and knew it was mine. Now I just carry it in my deep hiking pants pocket or strapped to a water bottle carrier. The folder is almost exactly the same knife, only it folds for easy pocket carry.

I remember that, it's one of the reasons I am hesitant to use the paracord belt loop on my new 4. I use a boot clip for an ESEE-3 on my HEST and wear it inside the belt. It rides high and out of sight so I am more likely to stick it in my side than lose it, but looking at that side by side comparison and the dimensions on the folder I am really liking the idea of it a lot.

Just got my HEST folder today and I am totally pleased with it, it's a great knife! I especially love the rotolock feature. The only thing I might change is to make the pocket clip a little closer to the handle, ie less space under it. It would be more comfortable to hold that way, but that's a nitpick. Overall it's a great hard use folder! Thanks for the great review.

HD thanks for the follow up. Good to to hear you just had a jacked up knife to begin with and this one is better. Thanks for the heads up.

Glad this HEST Folder works better Horn Dog. Thanks for the updated review.

Very nice of Jeff to send it.

Mine has a dodgy lock, here's the video i said i do in the other thread. I've heard back from DPX gear now, and my knife is on it's way back to them for repair or replacement. So that's all good...

The second half of the video is about a weird little issue I haven't seen mentioned yet...I managed to cut myself with the knife closed...

How about a HEST folder that is a slipjoint, of course, with a hard back spring, somewhat like a french Laguiole, two handed opening at first glance.
It could have a similar external locking pin like the extrema ratio Rao backup lock, that could also be used as a removable thumb stud for one hand opening, but i wouldn't mind just the two handed opening design, because with some practice it can be opened also one handed, and there is the bottle opener wave option too...
with the pin in the blade hole, it can be opened one hand, and with the pin in handle, it locks just like a fixed blade
plus, without locking with the pin, batoning freaks and reviewers can safely hit the spine of the blade, the slipjoint nature alowing it to move with no damage
I think that would be legal quite almost everywhere
the blade would remain the same, maybe could be a bit shorter (still for legality), but of equal thickness to the original
just an idea anyway, I was curious of the opinions here also, so there it is

Yes, if mine comes back working this good or if the replacement is this good, I will be 100% pleased. Maybe I should send the new one to Jeff and keep his. I scratched the coating a bit with that light batonning I did. And you know what he thinks about folks doing that with a folder. Darned baton twirlers! :D

Update: Linda at DPx Gear customer service has informed me that my replacement HEST folder has shipped. That's great.

You do know you could have had it in the mail in less time it took to make the video right :)) I want to have a look at that before I head out again

Cheers

I just took still pictures, RYP. I review lots of knives. It's a shame I got one so stiff. It's the detent. Also, sometimes it locks up so tight, I have to pry the lock off the blade tang. But customer service is a big deal to me, and I very much appreciate yours. I absolutely love the one I am using now. I wanted a folding version of the HEST, and this is it.

I think any review, positive or negtaive, should always be made public and I applaud HD for his work in the past. All of it.

My hest/f had the same problem only it never completely failed like yours. I took mine apart and bent the lock bar slightly and now it locks up like a bank vault. Thats probably what Dpx will do to yours. I also noticed that you can cut yourself with the knife closed, but I've been using mine for almost two weeks and I have been safe. I think you would have to really try as you did
to cut yourself with it closed. Just my 2 cents
