New & Improved: DPx HEST/F

Glad you got yourself a good one HD. It would appear that some of the early ones are having problems. Not uncommon with a brand new product to market. As to whether the glitches are ironed out eventually to everyone's satisfaction, only time will tell. Personally I have learned to avoid being an early adopter for these very reasons...

Got mine today. I'm pretty happy with it so far, but haven't had much time to play with it. There were a couple minor imperfections, but I'm not really worried about any of them.

Lockup is about 40%.
Blade is not exactly centered when closed. Probably 60/40.
I can touch the blade when the knife is closed, but I really have to try.
There is a tiny bit of blade play.
Blade coating came with a couple small scratches.
I haven't tried the spine wack test.

My hest/f had the same problem only it never completely failed like yours. I took mine apart and bent the lock bar slightly and now it locks up like a bank vault. Thats probably what Dpx will do to yours. I also noticed that you can cut yourself with the knife closed, but I've been using mine for almost two weeks and I have been safe. I think you would have to really try as you did
to cut yourself with it closed. Just my 2 cents

Perhaps. I don't understand enough about frame lock engagement to want to attempt that sort of thing on a knife n this price range.

The thing with the blade edge being touchable...not something that will keep me from carrying, or recommending, the knife. But while arguably minor it does seem like a design flaw to me. As I said in the video I don't think it should even be POSSIBLE to cut yourself on a closed folding knife...that seems to be the whole idea behind making them fold in the first place. It might be worth seeing if they can tweak it in the next production run. it would only take a few centimeters to keep it from happening at all.

millimeters you mean :D, or a backspacer
But I have no problems with that aspect, it will go down in time anyway due to sharpening

I am hopeful that all the little problems with the HEST/F will be taken care of in future releases. Gianni seems to be a craftsman who takes pride in his work. The "good one" I have now belongs to Jeff Randall. My replacement should be arriving soon.

I carried the HEST/F around today, showing it to several people who like knives. All were impressed. One young lady wants to buy one. She liked the idea of a bottle opener and glass breaker. She usually packs an automatic folder, so the price did not scare her at all. But then, she is a knife nut.

Hi Horn Dog -

Interesting.

I have the LE version. I also have a very nice (IMO) assortment of other very fine folding knives from various manufacturers, which I always show to my wife.

Of all the knives I have, she seems to like the Mr. DP DPx HEST/F more than any of the others. She say's it just stands out from the rest.

I have been carrying the LE almost exclusively since I received it and I still am liking the knife.

The lockbar issue seems to have subsided with some use, as I cannot get the lockbar to "wiggle off" of the tang anymore.

Thanks for your second review.

best regards -

Mine has a dodgy lock, here's the video i said i do in the other thread. I've heard back from DPX gear now, and my knife is on it's way back to them for repair or replacement. So that's all good...

The second half of the video is about a weird little issue I haven't seen mentioned yet...I managed to cut myself with the knife closed...

Hi Joben -

I mentioned the closed-blade issue in my first picture / initial review.

Nice video - thanks for posting.

I get it bro. I am sure Dpx will return yours as close to perfect as possible. It really is a fun knife to use and carry. Good luck.

DPx Customer Service came thru. My replacement HEST folder arrived today. It is flawless, like the loaner I have been using. Lockup is solid. It opens easily. It's sharp. The blade is centered in the handle. I will send this unused one to Jeff, as I scatched his up a little using it. I suppose if I tried real hard I could get part of one of my fat fingers inside the handle to cut myself. Or I could just take a pointed stick and shove it in my eye. One is as likely as the other.

Thank you for your excellent customer service, Mr. Pelton.

Damn it. You guys are a bunch of jerks and are costing me too much money!

I had cancelled my order for a production and then started reading this thread. I all ready have a sterile LE that I think is great but a little off. I was just going to sell it and have some extra money for myself. After reading through this thread I ordered one of the production versions from KSF and it arrived today. So now instead of having the $250.00 back in my pocket, I now have 2 DPX folding knives. The production version is awesome. Fit, finish and lock up are outstanding. So as much as I want to be pissed, I believe I found my new EDC.

I will be sending my LE back to RYP to get tuned up, I think it will help as just a few things were off on it. I have not complained about it because I was one of the first to sand down my stop pin. Did a pretty crappy job of it too. My crappy work on the stop pin has been my problem with the knife, Not the knife itself. Horn dog and others, thanks for the post and updates, they do make a difference. KSF thank you for the quick delivery.

I'm glad things worked out good
...that one was really funny :D still laughing

The real fix was sanding the contact point on the blade, a smaller pin would needed to be very different in shape,
the way I see it, the thick part of the pin goes through the scale with the G-10, so the hole in the scale matches the diameter of the pin,and the small side of the pin goes through the a smaller hole in G-10, similar to the hole on the other scale.
the pin does have a slight movement side to side, and so, sometimes it stick a bit out on the G-10 side
I think this is because it was meant to move and rotate for equal wear, but i could be wrong
It would have stayed firmly in place if the thick part was just a bit longer, and the pin side a bit shorter, so it wouldn't move inside the thinner titanium scale, if that makes any sense, somewhat like in the picture below
now if a thinner pin would be installed, it would have a gap in the hole of the scale, and will rest only in the hole in the G-10
for the pin to rest on the scale too and not only on the G-10, it would have to be thicker at that side, and thinner only where the blade sits, or a washer of equal thickness to the thinner scale would have to be installed in the scale hole, and the thick part of the pin would be shorter

hope this makes sense :D

that and my concern with the pin was that it would cause the blade to open farther giving you a poorer fit for the lock to mate up with. thats why i sanded on the blade itself where it contacted the pin at closeup

take it easy

that is what I'm going to to on mine, or send it to DPX for a quick fix, if it ever gets to be a real problem that is :D, and I don't see that happening very soon

Does it have any issues with lockup? Because ive heard some horror stories about a few hest folders that closed w/o even engaging the framelock:/

Hey HD, I followed your first review of the folder since I was having the exact same issue. Damn thing was hard as sin to open...I followed all of the advise that was tossed your way and not much of a change with mine. I just took a picture of it because I noticed some rubbing on G10 side of the blade. Does this look like it's suppose to be this way or do I need to ship it out and get it replaced?

Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread or anything

If I were you, I'd send it in. It seems that a few of them may have this problem.
