New Kershaw Blurs...

Hmm... blackwash is getting a lot of good press here, but I have to say the stonewash is pretty good too! Bronzeish brown color is very nice.

Hadn't bought any KAI knives in a year and a half or so and now two in two months; I'm impressed so far. Would be cool to see a Piston run in a different color and steel too. That knife doesn't get enough good press for what a good design it is.

Fetzer85, my lockbar is all the way on the blade tang but just barely so. Not sure what percentage that would be.

Thanks, I got the ok from Knifecenter to send it back so I did on Thursday. If they are able to check to make sure it's good then I just requested another one but I said if for some reason they can't ensure that it's good then I'd just prefer a refund. I hope they send a good one...I want one!

Well unfortunately a lady from Knifecenter customer service just called me to inform me that their entire stock of elmax Blurs (a little over 20) are all alike in that their lockbars just barely engage with the blade tang...so I opted for the refund.
Kudos to Knifecenter, bummer for me.

Mine engages early, but it is all the way on the lock bar. I would say about 15-20%. Maybe check with Kershaw Guy and see if his stock is any different. You never know...

Well this thread was too much. I just ordered the blackwash model from Kershawguy after doing my best to resist.

I don't have any of the elmax versions, but all 4 of my blurs are pretty early. Just flip it a bunch and let it wear in.

Oldest and the most broken in blur I have. (also my first knife)

Newest addition, which probably hasn't been flipped more than 25 times.

Lockup on mine is perfect. I got mine from Kershawguy.

That does look perfect. I would've taken even a little less perfect than that honestly...

Thanks for the advice but IMO the one I received (and seemingly the rest of KC's stock) shouldn't have passed QC. I'm really not a very picky guy but it shouldn't be that hard to get it right...

Did the lock fail?

I don't know if you've ever worked in a factory, but they can't QC every single blade. It would take entirely too much time.

They likely crank them out in batches and check one or two per batch. Its quite plausible for the tolerances to get just a touch off in the middle of a batch and it go unnoticed. It happens in every single sizeable company in any industry.

The only reason it shouldn't have passed QC is if the lock was failing. If it didn't fail then there isn't a reason it shouldn't have passed. Did it fail at all? Who knows. It could have been the little liner lock that could..... Never underestimate the underdog. ;)

Also, did you ask the lady at KC to email you a picture of one of the other one's? I doubt all 20 of theirs were like that. I'm betting they were closer to my BDZ1 blur, or the other elmax ones on here.

I think that those of you that are concerned about their lockup should just take advantage of KAI's warranty. They can tweak it for you, no problem. These are limited edition knives, so there is only so much exchanging that can be done here. Would you prefer not to do that? Of course, but as others have said, that's the reality of manufacturing today. The kind of QC you are talking about would significantly drive up the price, then you'd complain about that...

Honestly, if it were mine I'd just take it apart and bend it inward ever so slightly.

So... Any advice on sharpening these bloody things? I feel like my Lansky set isn't up for sharpening a recurve like this, and as it is, I am feeling the blade could have been shipped much sharper...

That blackwash looks especially good, I like the "antique" kind of look it gives, especially with the brown/bronze handles. Given that I bought the S30V Blur about 6 weeks ago, I (sadly) can't justify it to myself to buy another of the same knife with basically the same blade shape. Maybe they will make the S30V or Elmax in another blade shape at some point.
