New Knife Existential Dread

The benefit of buying cheap is that you can buy more than one.

One to keep, one to store, and maybe one or two more. :p

Yeah I get the new knife jitters too. It's like dipping your toes in cold water while trying to work up the courage to jump in. You know that every moment you wait is just prolonging your suffering.

Supposedly there's this thing in the cycling community where they pay people to scratch up their new rides. It's pretty strange, but in a way it kinda makes sense.

Use it. It's a recent production knife. A very nice production knife, but a production knife nonetheless.

One thing to keep in mind is that your kids will eventually sell all your knives at a garage sale for a quarter each, used or not.

You mean you don’t buy three of the same CRKs or Rocksteads? Unbelievable.

Kidding haha.

That cycling trivia sounds rather absurd. Why have someone else scratch up your ride? Make your own scratches with memories attached to them.

I've got a 20 year old bike that I just had tuned up, with significant bike mechanic envy regarding the bike's look and condition. It's a good ride.

The only knives I don’t use are the ones (3 total) that have sentimental value. I’ve worn out a bunch that I don’t use often, but they are stashed in places for use, like the garage or kitchen. I have unused knives that are backups and they will eventually replace the one that’s in use. As for safe queens, I don’t have any, but my dad has two large displays hanging on the wall of old Case knives that have never been used. When I end up with them, they will continue to hang on a wall unused. I say enjoy them how you want to, but I’ll never buy a knife that I’m not going to use. But, that doesn’t mean I won’t own knives that I’ll never use. If they are too pretty to use them I say display them instead of keeping them stored away.

I just scored a GEC and now I find myself afraid to use the knife. Do any of you guys suffer the same thing? Should I shelve the GEC or throw it in my pocket and use it? It's just so damn pretty!

I pretty much know if a knife will be a user or collectable when I buy it. But occasionally I change my mind.

There is a lot of wisdom in this thread already.

My opinion FWIW, don’t carry cheap low quality knives, buy good quality knives to use.

With that being said if you are collecting knives it makes sense to keep them pristine, especially if you already have a good solid user that fills the same roll.

For example I’m not going to use this one,

I already have a standard one I use. Some people would not even use the standard one. Which would be a shame.
