The camera has a tough time picking all of them up... but here's a pic. Black speckles are on both sides of the blade.

As opposed to this 5160 119 I bought several years ago which was flawless. .

I imagine that since Buck was using stuff up that was sitting around to do these build outs, I bet a lot of the 5160 stock has these speckles.

I used "Simichrome Polish" - and an old white tshirt. A little paste goes a long way. The key is to cut up the shirt into small pieces (whatever size you are comfortable working with) - Constantly use a new piece / side. Pieces will turn black right away as you polish (don't keep using a grey/black piece of cloth). Took me 20 minutes or so (maybe could still use another 20 to completely remove all traces of the marks).

Careful to not cut yourself. The polish will fade/take off most text (text that is not stamped) - so be careful if the text is important to you.

If the marks are not pitted, then polishing time and effort should remove the marks. Or send it back to buck to fix - Call, photos, free return label.

Thanks for the info... sounds like I just need to spend more time with it, I used the same stuff. And you're 100% correct in needing to be careful about not getting cut in the process, these knives came seriously sharp.

Most of the marks on my 119 blade are up front along what I call the false edge, on both sides of the blade. My 117 has the flecks scattered about the blade.

if i was gonna display it or only collect it...........
I might care, but if I was gonna use it I wouldn't

ya might try using a pencil eraser to remove those black marks. might be too deep, but if just surface they may come off. I do this to remove rust spots without affecting the blade finish from using polishes.

5160 is a great user. I have that blem 5160 I got from Mike couple years ago. one of my favorites.

For reference - those "speckles", all over the blade, would bother me more than my two "spots" - which were twice the size (at least) of your specks. If your knives are going to be collectibles - I would think about sending them back (postage paid by Buck) to Buck to be cleaned (for free). I guess it depends on how much time / energy / patience you have to do the cleaning yourself.

As a User - scratches, spots, discoloration, I would go so far as a small chip in the edge - would not bother me. But where to draw the line with quality control - shouldn't a New knife be NEW (especially at a certain price point / collectible / limited edition) ?

I bought my two "limited Edition" 119's (Ironwood & 5160) to add to my collection of 119 variants and, yes... I think its shameful for Buck to send these knives out like that.

Whether or not the knife is going to be a user or display knife, either way, the knife should be up to the task for either case from the start, especially when a premium is paid for a "limited edition" knife.

Add this to the overheated burnt tips on the D2 Heritage 105's that some people here received (including myself), this feels like a not so welcomed trend developing from Buck. I probably wouldn't be so irritated with this had I not just gone through the hassles of getting the 105 replaced under warranty

It's certainly going to make me think twice, when the next "Limited Edition" run pops up for sale.

so what are the black specs? corrosion or something else?

Wow, thatnks for all the photos folks! I think it's great that Buck puts out these limited editions every now and then, a little something for everyone right. That said, I don't get many of them, often high prices or not my cup of tea being offered. I don't like buying any of the LE/SO sight unseen as it's always a grab bag deal (you never know what your going to get) some of them are to die for, some just nice, and some that should have been in the blem pile IMHO.

My Ironwood 119 came in, yeah. I'm a collector first and formost, that makes me have certian expectations as to how a LE knife should look new out of the box. I did not get one of the to die for examples. However, I did get a nice one like most of you guys got. My only complaint is one side has a blemish in the wood a natural void, I know some of you would call it character but the critical collector in me sees it as a defect that draws my eye right to it!!! I love Ironwood, any of you who got one of these, take it outside into direct sunlight to see what this wood is all about as its incredable.

Click on the photo and it will open to my photobucket account and you can scroll the rest of the photos

Does anyone know how many of the Ironwood 119's they produced? It's no longer on the website.

The critical collector in me sees a chip in the wood (but, I would have to see the knife in hand to make the final decision if I felt it was a chip in the wood or a natural depression/void). Just my 2 cents. Other than that, the knife looks great !

My black spots were more like discoloration (that took a fair amount of elbow grease to polish away). No pitting. I guess corrosion on its way to pitting if left untreated ?
Same here, reminds me very much of rust bluing on guns, where red oxide rust is allowed to form and then is converted to black oxide, leaving a dark coloration. The specks on mine are a consistent shape... Looks like black paint overspray.

After an extra week with the F_d_x bunch, these finally arrived.

The heft on the 119 is incredible. Love the character in the Ironwood. The 212 Rangers have grown on me as a nice little hiking knife and I'm looking forward to purchasing some sheaths from Mike, if and when he's back in action.
