So, I've noticed that NU-Bs come in here not knowing how things work, and PEOPLE (even behind your keyboard, that's what you are) bust their b@lls right off the bat. They ask questions like "the best steel", etc.

I think you see where I'm going with this. I hope some MODs check in on this. COUGAR? ESAV?

I have to say that the General Knife Discussion forum has been compromised.

Now we have a lot of junk and 15 different "What do you think of it?" threads.

Needless to say I've stopped coming in here because of all the un-knowledgeable people voicing their opinions instead of real facts.

Read my response. Post #18

so youre saying that you knew everything about knives when you first got into them? that sights like this didnt help you gain the knowledge you hold today? i feel like thats a pretty ignorant statement considering that people come to this sight to learn all that they can about knives and everything that goes along with them...people ask questions because they obviously dont know the answer themselves...hence the purpose of a forum. and if you really knew everything there would be no reason for you to visit this site anyways...so why knock the people who are trying to gain knowledge of their new hobby?

My wording may have been wrong; I was trying to stick up for the NU-B's that get shat upon for asking a question.

i understood your original post, my mistake for not pointing out that i was responding to the first gem that responded to it...and thanks for stickin up for us new guys

Why don't you tell us exactly what your thinking? from observing this and your other thread you seem to have a bug somewhere it should't be....

I don't see it. I think the newbies get helped alot unless they act like morons. I'm still a newbie and I catch crap once in awhile but for the most part 99% of the folks here are more than willing to share information.

Of course it does get tiring reading 15 "Recommend a folder for me" threads without feeling the desire to just tell the guy to look around, read and figure it out for himself.

I think what happens when a forum grows to this size, is that new comers ask questions that have been asked a thousand times over. Over time the more experienced memebers are tired of seeing/hearing about it so the responses become less and less friendly and welcoming over time?

Just to Edit/Comment on my above response, thats just what I would assume, I havent experienced that myself but generally find myself in select areas of the forum.

And as far as the mods go, Esav has beaned me twice (for acting like a moron of course) but I've seen that he is actually one of the most impartial and fair people around.

Stick around, you guys will figure it all out.

You are right on. Over the internet people can make all the SA comments they want. Many people are still new to this form of communication (believe it or not), but some a$$holes don't realize this. I admit, I have ridiculed on occasion for dumb shizznit here-or-there.:)

Who cares, the internet is an imaginary gym class, where the picked on kids do some e-bullying and everyone has a plus one Sebenza of coolness.

we need to encourage the new blood as much as possible. attrition will take enough of us as it is . the only way any group continues to survive is the addition of new contributors.

On every forum I've been on, older members get tired of the same threads repeatedly being posted, especially when the info the threadstarter asks for is just a search away. I can see where that would get tiring, but there are probably more polite ways to tell people who start those threads to search for the info.

Just a few points to keep in mind:

-We were ALL new once. Nothing wrong with that. Encouragement will get you better results than cold criticism.
-No one knows it all. We have a few that come close, but not by a long shot. There is always something to learn and someone to teach.
-Trolling gets you no where quick here. Thankfully we have dedicated staff that do their due diligence and take out the trash when necessary.

Knife knowledge is about experience and not opinions. I did not know sh1t when I was looking for knives. Reading helped, but opinions on this particular forum has ruined the point. This forum has too many new comers giving opinions and asking "ignorant" questions such as "Best knife steel" and "What about this knife?"

Comments such as "I think it's really good and I've had it for 3days" are less than significant to note or read.

If you ever look at Knife reviews.com, you'll see people typing up "Good knife, 10/10" on every knife they have. What you don't see very often is a real user who has put the knife to real use, not opening mail or cutting a piece if fruit for a week. Look up a few of my Reviews. I use Anon as my name on that site. Every rating and review with over 150 words donates $.25 to KnifeRights.com

I'm not here to knock people. But as your response tells me, you're part of the new-comers group.

The best you can do is read. We do not need your "experience" because you're a new comer and as you've admitted, you have no knowledge and you're here to learn. Read a lot, read more and when you've handled a dozen quality folders, speak about your experiences.

Your first knife purchase advised by forum members may be your greatest knife, but it won't be the best in the world. You need a basis to judge anything. They don't post signs to invite people to become CourtRoom judges, you need to earn your degree.

1. Checking in. (Cougar's not a mod.)

2. Moving from General Knife to FEEDBACK.

3. Big forum, hundreds of members active at a time. Some old, some new, some experienced and others just curious. Most of us welcome newbies. Some newbies, just like some old-timers, are harder to take. One guy posted over 20 quickie questions in General Knife the other day. Too much.

If you're the new kid on the block, look around, smile at everyone, read what's already been written lately, read the rules. A lot of questions get answered so often, a current thread may be on the first page of the subforum.

Personally, if some new guy asks a question I've read too often lately, I'll say hello and leave it to someone else to answer: if you don't have something nice to say, just move on.

But with so many people, some are less accomodating than others. Illegitimis non carborundum.
