Sal and I have been talking about introducing a Spyderco version of my Microstar, basically a smaller version of the Starmate which I have been making for several years now. We're in the early stages of re-designing the Microstar to include the opening blade hole at the moment but during the process ,Sal asked me what I thought of bringing back the Starmate with possibly different handle materials.
Apparently it was a very popular model during its run and I wondered what the forum folks thought about the idea???
Also, I wondered if their were any thoughts out there of names for the new Microstar. That's the name of my custom version ( Like the custom version of the Starmate is the Century Starfighter). we don't want to use the custom name for the smaller version so...... Any ideas for the new name? Thanks,BOB

I think you just made a lot of folks very happy with that ost. Me being one of them, so thank you for the update. We don't seem to go a week on this forum wihtout soe positive mention of the starmate and they seem to move pretty quick when they occaisonally show up for sale or trade.
I don't know about a name for the micro but I am very excited that there will be at least one more Terzuolo/spyderco.

Fantastic ! I would love the microstar ! And I'd be all over an S30V , Carbon fiber Starmate, same old config, single liner, same clip position ,new materials. As far as the micro star name, how about the "Star Mite".

The Starmate was one of the best models Spyderco made. I really hated to see it go. I would love to see it brought back. The Micro Star would also be a welcome addition. Maybe a matching set?

Please, Please bring back the Starmate. When I first saw it I was going through some hard times. Things are better now and I'd like the chance to get one. BTW I'm left handed and am considering ordering a knife from you. Do you have a web site or some way I can get in touch with you? Thanks

The Starmate is one of my favorite Spydies. It'd be real nice to see it return in an upgraded version, along with a smaller Starmate Jr.

Bob, Great news! The Starmate is a very good knife. I would love to see one in dark Maroon G-10. A Spyderco version of the Micro Star would be awesome!! How about calling it the "neutrino", "galaxy" or "nebula"...or maybe "Starlite"

How about using the compression lock on the new run? i think the comp lock has proven it's worth!

Hey! I was just about to post that. Bring on a compression lock Starmate. How about the Spyderco/Bob T "Meteor"?

While I'm not really keen on a smaller version of the Starmate, I am extremely pleased to see that the normal size Starmate may be coming back.

I don't really think that the Starmate needs to be changed much. Keep the liner lock and G10, but switch to S30V for the steel.

Spyderco just doesn't use Micarta enough. Make the handles Micarta and call it the "Micarstar". :D

I have a matching set of C-15/C-19 Terzuola Clipits with aluminum scales, now maybe I can get a knife to match my StarMate. Cool! :) :)

A new StarMate with an S30V or BG-42 blade and G-10 or even FRN of the Endura wold be nice, although the balance of the latter would be screwed up, I should think. After all, FRN is rather lighter than G-10.

Here's some possible names with their explanations:-

1. Quark - 2 syllables and 'cute" enough a name to pass muster, yetr with astronomical meaning to it still?

2. Satellite - which orbits around a larger astronomical body

3. Binary - another way of calling it "Starmate" because it means the stellar mate to another star, revolving in a twin star system

I would love to see a starmate in carbon fibre..also Stainless??

how about calling the Spyderco version of Micro Star

Nebula or
Orion

can you ship both to me tomorrow...

Ren

For Spyderco's version of the Microstar, I'd call it Nanostar.

As far as bringing back the Starmate: S30V with carbon fiber scales.

In both cases, make the knives tip-up, just like your custom knives.

That's really interesting... With what accent is this a two-syllable word? As far as I know, most native English speakers would pronounce it "kwark".

Neat. :)

edited 'cause I sounded too pedantic the fist time 'round :D

WOW! Great posts guys! With all of those neat names I'll have to design a dozen new knives! thanks for the input. SAL ARE YOU LISTENING ! BOB

Sal and Bob - if you will even consider doing carbon fiber scales - please, make it matte finish. Otherwise, Spyderco has the best G-10 finish, custom or production in the entire knife industry, IMO>

Also, lockback or compression lock is ok. Ball-lock could be exciting - who knows?

The other main criteria - no thumbstud please. Spyderhole only, if possible.
