New microstar and starmate reprise???

Please DO NOT swiss cheese the new "SpyderMite" I know it takes more effort to make a Rightie, Leftie configuration, but if your going to go ahead and make another colaboration, don't ruin the effort by cutting corners. The past colaborations are what they are because Spyderco didn't SKIMP.
One mans opinion...

Guys, PLEASE end this linerlock conversation and agree to make it with a compression lock. That's the only way I would buy it. A mid lock (or front) works great on a beefy knife like the Manix, but I think the Star(insert new name here) really suits a Compression.

PS: I'm definitely not a fan of the 4 way holes on some models (Stretch), but I'm a righty who likes all knives tip down. So it all comes down to how many people you want to please versus how many variations (lefty) you are willing to produce and see a market for.

If this is really going to be an update on the classic, I'd love to see the Compression lock and S30V on the new knifes. But if VG10 and a lockback in Seki is the easiest and most affordable, I'd go for that too.

The Starmate was my first Spyderco and remains one of the most beloved ones.
I like the Idea of a smaller version, because I edc mine not very often now due to its big size.
Front lock is ok, but something nicer than FRN would be cool, especially Micarta without bolsters if possible. Moki should have some experience with that ;)
I don´t like the "four positions clip holes" very much, to positions (for lefties and righties), doesn´t matter if tip-up or tip-down, would be plenty. As I´m a lefty, only one position would be ok, too :)

Sal,

I would love to see the Starmate again - and when the day comes, I will get both it and its little brother.

I see the new "Starlite" as a downsized, but NOT downgraded version of the Starmate. Both should be made in Golden, and both should have S30V blades.

I really like the compression lock, especially as implemented in the Paramilitary, and I think a compression lock would work without disturbing the aesthetics of the Starmate. If a compression lock is not to be, then keep the liner lock. Please DON'T go with a lockback - it just wouldn't be a Terzula.

For scales, it seems that either matte finish CF or G-10 would be in keeping with the Terzuola image. Perhaps G-10 for the Starmate and Matte CF for the Starlite - making it both "Gentleman's" knife and a good working knife at the same time.

I have always believed that with Spyderco knives, form always follows function. Wtih Bob Terzuola's knives, it seems that form and function are perfectly matched.

Soooo... Sal,

If I could be in charge of Spyderco production for one project, I would start with this one thought. "We already know that function is non negotiable, so that leaves form. And in this case form isn't negotiable either.

If you can afford to approach this one with that attitude, you will have an absolute winner.

Thanks for listening

Chuck

I'd keep the Starmate close to the original design, with enhancements. Keep the liner lock...its a terzuola, especially since Spyderco has improved it.

Concerning "do you prefer the full open access like the Military or the minimal access, supposedly safer, but more difficult to unlock?" I'd keep it minimal access as before.

Keep the closed back, it'll make it different than most and it protects the blade in case you take the clip off and carry it loose in your pocket.

Don't put in multiple holes, make a seperate lefty version if needed. Keep it tip down. The old starmate was designed for quick opening with the spyder drop. If you move to tip up...more terzuola-like, add the cobra hood so it'll be like a thumb disk, which bob uses on a lot of knives.

Keep the three hole triangular designed clip.

Upgrade to S30V and keep production in the US.

I'm fond of the lockback idea but lets switch to s30v and keep production here at the Colorado facility. I'm also not too crazy about the four position clip mounting. It leaves WAY too many open holes!

BTW: Hello Mr. Terzuola, we met at the 25th anniversity party for Applied Research Associates. I'm glad to see you doing another collaboration with Spyderco.

I think the G10 handle is perfect. A different lock would be nice, and a low profile clip. Other then that, I'm happy with my Starmate.

Blades

I'll buy anything with both those names on the blade...I've trying to get one for ages.

The return of the Starmate and the new Microstar are great news! I want the Microstar to be a liner lock or compression lock. I can't imagine a Terzoula lockback. I agree with Architect and Shootist that blasted or matte carbon fiber is best if Spyderco does not use G-10.

On second thought, a VG-10, lockback Microstar could be very nice. Afterall, the Persian came out very nice looking. If the Microstar is a lockback, I would like it to be either dull finish micarta like the Persian or black or gray G-10, In either case, I would like it without bolsters because all of my favorite custom Terzoulas are without bolsters. :D

This is sounding better as I think about it!!!

Well, since we are dreaming here, why not go all out?!!!

S30V Titanium handles, integral compression lock and open back  !

The Mircostar will Micarta handles.

Well, however they end up, I am going to start already with saving my money.
(But if they are not lockbacks, I would vote for an open back.

Hell, yeah!!!! :)

The Starmate was one of the best models Spyderco made. I really hated to see it go. I would love to see it brought back. The Micro Star would also be a welcome addition. Maybe a matching set?

What he said! But maybe silver G-10 instead of black

Someone on the other forum suggested giving the Starmate steel bolsters. Which would be cool.

OTOH, that would mean adding dual liners and making the whole thing thicker and heavier than before... :barf:

I still think the original Starmate design and materials were fine for the use I've put mine through the last couple years, same knife with S30V blade would be even better, Carbon fiber scales would be awesome, but the G10 on my old Starmate has really taken a beating with not much ill effect. It would be nice to have one smaller but exactly like the original .

Great idea to bring back Terzuola designs. I would buy one of each model.

boy, am i glad to be back watching concepts unfurl here. the excellent discussion with real results is part of why i have spydies scattered all about.

like the 4-way lock, sal. no opinion on liner style. seki and vg10 works well for me, since i'm not on quite the budget to be buying the golden knives. that said, i'm excited every time a project comes together, and i dig the starmate.

I only got thru the first page and now my excitement has got the better of me and I have to post. :D  :D WOOHOO!! WOOHOO!! The Starmate is BACK BAYBEE!!

I would just like the Starmate to have dual steel liners and blue G-10 handles would be nice too. Or some other color than black. OH! And S30V or BG-42 for the blade steel would be quite nice too. :D

Microstar needs a production name, eh?

Starbaby maybe. Starmate Jr. as mentioned before sounds good.

I'm just stoked about the Starmate coming back!! Sorry if these names have been mentioned already. ;)
