New microstar and starmate reprise???

A lightly blasted CF would be great. I would also stick with a liner lock. That stays true to the original. Besides, Spyderco has some of the best liner locks in the business.

That's really interesting... With what accent is this a two-syllable word? As far as I know, most native English speakers would pronounce it "kwark".

Neat. :)

edited 'cause I sounded too pedantic the fist time 'round :D

A little too careless with my typing and expression there, so you're right - it's a single syllable word, even in my English! :D I was actually trying to say that "quark" works better than, say, "quasar" because the latter is a 2 syllable word.

Oh wow! A Starmate Jr. That would be awesome. I thought it wasn't gonna happen but this is great!
Just checked out the Microstar and that thing looks great!
I would LOVE Green Canvas Micarta. Otherwise G-10. CF is also good as long as it's matte and not shiny.
Liner lock is fine by me. My two starmate's lock-up rock solid. And, please keep the excentric pivot!

Name...uh...

SpyderStar
MicroSpy

When can we order? :D

YEEEEEEEEEEEES, Please!!!! I have a starmate and like it a lot. I would like 'em even better is the blade was 1mm thinner. It would cut MUCH better and S30V is tough enough on it's own.

Looking forward to both.

JD

To me, any configuration would grab me. Personally I wouldn't change a thing other than blade steel and making it a lockback. Just please keep the terzuola medallion on it.

s30v and colored g10, tan, drk green, grey, maroon keep the handle sedate and grippy please.

The Starmate is still IMO one of the most versatile and uncompromising Spyderco models. I'm glad to hear this is in mix again. As long as the handles aren't some bright color, I'm in for one when they are made.

take care,
Ken

Gotcha :)

Hi Bob. Welcome to the Spyderco forum. Thanx fer visitin', appreciate. This is a very knowledgable group. They know quite a bit about your knives.

On the Starmate,

The pattern would remain the same. I think improvement would be difficult ;)

We would re-engineer the lock to the latest geometry. Sorry Ted, the eccentic would have to go. We've advanced the design to the point where we don't think we need it any more.

I would prefer to go with an "open spine" in place of the full back spacer, opinions?

Blade material would be S30V.

Handle material is open.

On the Microstar, We would have to work with Bob to "Spyderize" the blade to fit the hole.

Easiest would be a VG-10 lockback in Seki. Thoughts?

THANK YOU MR GLESSER !! Open frame would be okay(standoff posts ?)instead off a full back spacer, Cabon fiber or G10, S30V (cool) but glad to hear there will be no pattern changes on the Starmate, it's perfect as it is. I have carried mine everday since they first came out. Really don't have a preference on the Microstar collab, because it's a new idea, and Spyderco will do it up right.

By this, are you saying that you are looking at a different lock, say a Compression Lock or are you talking about an improved locking liner system that precludes the need for the eccentric pivot?

I agree 100%

Blade material would be S30V.
Fine.

Handle material is open.
I had said that G-10 or FRN would work for me, but the truth is that I would MUCH prefer G-10 for balance purposes. Unless I am very much mistaken, FRN scales would make the knife incredibly blade heavy.

As I said, I really liked how my C-19 matched my C-15 in every detail but size and that would appeal to me in the Microstar. But I do understand the economic necessities and, so long as it very closely resembles its big brother, I would still be very happy to buy one.

Open spine for the Starmate -- CF or G-10.

For the Microstar, how about CF or Micarta using the same factory that makes the Persian?

I vote for a linerlock, CF handle.
I think Spyderco has enough lockbacks in its inventory, and Bob T. is somewhat known in the area of linerlocks.

I will definately buy the Micro-. I've always LOVED the Starmate but thought it to be slightly too big. The Micro would be JUST right.

I have a starmate and love it. It has one problem. A finicky liner lock. The lock had problems from the getgo and was sent back to spyderco on about day 2 of use. After it was "repaired" it lasted two weeks. The blade gets loose. I solved it by adjusting the pivot and using lock-tite. Now it just rubs against the handle scale, but I can live with that.

For a new starmate, I'd suggest keeping the price within range of a normal person. IF someone wants an expensive terzuola design they can go to Microtech or to bob himself for his production version. So, do it with G10 handles. Use the back spacer, there are too many open back knives out there. Use the liner lock only if it has been improved since the first version. I'd buy another.

The reason I did not buy a starmate, despite my complete admiration of Bob's work, is the cutaway for the liner lock, and the liner lock itself. I have a nasty habit of accidentally releasing liner locks. I would use a compression lock, g-10. Simple enough.

Edited to add:
lockback, vg-10 microstar seems like a winner.
