new mini dyad jigged bone?

Thank you Paul.
I don't have any Dyad, so do not know how it is in a hand. I never was interested in Dyad before, but this one looks like very nice piece for collection and may be EDC when I travel out of state or go to the NYC. So, probably I will get one and than I will know better if I need second.

Paul,
Nice pics! See how your scales are somewhat oval and are just slightly thicker than the bolsters? That's what I'm talkin' about! :) Mine go straight across, are completely flat and do not rise above the bolsters.

I also noticed in Felly's pictures that his do the same. Both yours and his are more aesthetically pleasing to my eyes. Small complaint I know but slightly thicker scales don't add hardly any girth at all and will be stronger in the long run.

How sharp did yours come? Both blades on mine will definitely need a resharpening and especially the serrated blade. I can drag mine across my skin and it won't even scuff my skin much less cut me. This is a valid complaint to me as Spyderco has always been the leader in sharpness right out of the box. Rectifiable I know but shouldn't have happened.

I'm really not here starting a flame war concerning this little knife, I'm just stating facts about my example. It's a good knife and if folks are completely happy with theirs, that's great.

P.S. I visited your site Paul and what a wonderful collection you have! I owned about 95% of the knives you show over the last fifteen years or so but let them slip through my fingers as my interests moved on to other things.

Both blades one mine are the way I expect a new Spyderco's blade to be, sharp. If you dragged either of them across your skin you'd need at least a band-aid, and possibly stitches.

Was not looking to start a flame war either. I am sorry if you see the posts I made yesterday and this morning in that light. As I said earlier, I agree in general with your observation that the QC on Seki built knives is not as good as it once was. But, in fairness, out of all the issues you mentioned, I only saw two. The scales on mine, as you have observed yourself, could not be described as wafer thin, and I found both their fit, and that of the various metal parts to one another, to be quite acceptable. The sub-par finish on the blade well edges of the liners does appear to be an issue Sal might wish to speak to the maker about.

As I said above, both blades on mine are what I would call "Spydie sharp", but the points of the serrations are, as you observed, rounded. Not sure whether that's a QC issue or an intentional change. FWIW, when I compare them to those on the similarly sized Ladybug II, I would not say they are any more shallow. I was not questioning the truth of your observations, or your motives for expressing them, only trying to show those considering purchasing a Micro Dyad that your knife might be a lemon, rather than a representative specimen.

Nice pics Paul, thanx much.

On the piece, it is a first, we always appreciate all input.

Hi Gene,

If you are really unhappy with your knife, perhaps you should send it back where you got it or send it to Spyderco with an explanation of your problems.

K. Mine is like Paul's. Sorry, guess I should have looked closer. I'd post a picture, but Paul's is much nicer than what I would take. It's hard to get my camera to focus on such a small object.

Hi Paul,
No way was I eluding that what you stated in reference to my posts was adding flames to a flame war. If you thought that, then I apologize!

These boards are getting so huge and more and more company centralized and if you state that you have a problem with a knife, the latest generation of supporters come aboard and chatise you for you're opinion. I'm not saying you did Paul but if you read my posts above, I was supportive of the Micro Dyad but had some issues with my example.

Like I said, I used to have a collection of Spydercos that rivaled yours. No big deal but search the archives under "Gene" and you'll see that I once was a credible collector and the "ultimate" supporter of Spyderco knives as you.

Check the archives again and you'll see that Dexter Ewing and I put the Military Model on the map that is now in production in many different configurations and is one of Sal's best selling models. Sal designed it, (and what a great design it is!), but in due respect, Dexter and I put it on the map!

I was always amazed that Sal didn't award Dexter or myself a commemorative Military or whatever like he's done with so many of you guys that have done nothing but post tons of stuff over and over that you like his knives!

To prove my point, go to Fred Perrin's website, http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/2292/Militaryrev.html and read my short review of the 2nd Generation Military that I penned years ago! For you that don't know, Fred designed a couple of models for Spyderco.

When Sal was asking us for ideas for his knives in the early days of BladeForums, we all joined in. He is a generous man and CEO of one of the most successful knife companys. Some of Sal's success' was helped by our collective suggestions for many models that are still enjoyed today and even from the far, distant past.

If a knife doesn't meet your expectations, that doesn't mean it's the end all and do all of a certain company. Shout it out! That's how a lot of manufacturers are still in business today. Criticisim sometimes is a good thing!

For your information, and to give credit where credit is due and I'm sure most of you guys don't know, a abrasive guy like me, who's name is Mike Turber started this great forum.

Kevin, (Spark), who now owns this site was his webmaster. :). Mike and I had many arguments over the first few years but when he bailed, Kevin took over. These boards became the class act on the internet that it still is with Kevin at the helm. By the way, Mike also started knifeforums.com.

Some of the "rare" Spydercos and limited Spydercos that you're all after, started right here! I give that credit to Kevin after Mike bailed.

I know all this means little to most of you guys but by God, if we forget the past, we really don't know where we are and are deemed to repeat the past! :) BF has launched a thousand ships and is still the KING of knife forums on the net and especially when it comes to Spyderco knives!

Sal,
Thanks for posting and of course you have launched a "thousand ships" and I know I could return it to the dealer I purchased it from or return it to you to correct these issues. I'll have to decide what to do.

By the way folks, Sal started his business in my neck of the woods, (Redding, CA.), where he sold his sharpeners out of the back of his camper!

No apology needed Gene, just wanted to make it clear that I was not questioning either your facts or your motives for posting your observations. Merely wanted to illustrate that there was at least a reasonable chance others would not experience similar problems if they elected to purchase a Micro Dyad. If things had gone the other way, and mine had exhibited all the same issues as yours, rest assured I would have reported that as well.

As for collections, although I'm sixty one and have been carrying a pocket knife regularly for well over fifty of those years, I'm a relative newcomer to knife collecting and to Spyderco, having "found" both less than five years back. So, I would not be at all surprised if one or more of the knives in mine once belonged to you since almost all the older ones I have were "previously owned".

For those of you that didn't get a chance to go over to SF to see my pic's, here's a pic of the scale thickness that IMO turned out really well thanks to the super macro setting on my camera.

Also, both my micro's are typical Spyderco "shaving sharp". ;)

Hi Gene,

Some of us remember....and appreciate. Mike who? ;)

Regarding the model you received, they are all hand made so they are likely to all be a bit different. I know you've been around long enough to know.

Most important that you get what you want.

You also know that criticism doesn't bother me, we need it to improve.

Let me know what you want to do.

sal

Paul,
I know that and I appreciate your honesty. If yours had some issues, you would have said so. By the way, we're both about the same age and I too have carried a pocket knife for well over 50 years. I was a knifeknut way back in the '50's. Like you said, it's a large possibility that some of those Spyders in your collection passed through these gnarly mitts. Again, you have a very nice site and it's very informative!

felly,
Great pics and you have a gem there!

Sal,
I figured you memory would be somewhat hazy concerning MikeTurber! :) Thanks for your concern but I haven't quite decided what to do concerning the Micro. I waited a long time to get one. I may return it to the dealer or have your people sharpen it up for me. I'll let you know. Getting any time in on your motorcycle lately?

Hi Gene,

I was just kidding about Mike. We'd done a lot of chatting while he was around the industry. He's a very bright guy.

you might fair better sending the micro to us. We will have a larger inventory than the dealer. Call it to my attention.

Sold my bikes last year. Gail said I was too old to be "dragging my knees". Had a Honda "Hawk" and a Honda "Superhawk" (VTR-1000). the VTR was my "mountain ride". Very fast scooter.

My "mountain ride" is now a small Lotus. Also quite fast.

sal

Hi Sal,

I have fond memories of a "mountain ride" with you in your RX7.
Quite fast too!! :D

I love my new micro dyad, totaly Spyderco!

Best wishes,

Phil

Sal,
I knew your comment about Mike was tongue in cheek. He is very bright and we had some issues over the years but we remained friendly.

I guess your Lotus can somewhat take the edge off of not having a bike any longer! :)

I got rid of my Suzuki GS1150 awhile back but I still have my little Honda Hawk. It's a kick for these great mountain roads we have around Mt. Shasta. I will always have a bike no matter how small until I can't climb on one any longer. I've slowed down some but still love carving corners.

That's what I'll probably do with the Micro. I'll put it to your attention. Thanks much.

I'll look for it, Gene. Sorry 'bout th hassle.

Hang in there on the bike as long as you can.

Hey Phil,

get home ok?

Come on out and visit. we'll play on the mountain.

sal

Great idea Sal!

I'll see what I can do.
My best to the family.

Hi Sal and all.... .I am still alive.....
You guys still rock and I still have many memories of this place. 800-969-7771 rings to my cell. I make ATVs & motorycles now. Stay tuned. Maybe I will make a knife if Sal wants me too!

Hey Mike,
Glad to see you're still around! We had some great exchanges in the old days. You always made a dull day interesting. :)

Sal,
Sorry for the delay but the Micro Dyad is finally on it's way to you. Like I said, it's really not too bad but it definitely isn't up to Spyderco sharpness and I don't like the bone scales where they meet the bolsters. If you can't exchange it for a nicer example, please at least sharpen it up. I sent the package to your attention.

I also sent something else in the package that I need you to help me with. Thanks so much!
