dunno if this is the right place to post this (apologies to mod if not), but for Opinel fans, there's a new series with some interesting (IMHO) features:

http://www.opiknife.com/proddetail.asp?prod=opinel-No8-outdoor

i like my Coughlan's Opie, but had to drill a hole in end of the handle to attach a small lanyard and used a vinegar etch on the carbon blade to prevent rust
(live on a saltwater peninsula, so Spydie H1 Salts are my good friends)

but this Opie looks like a fit item to keep on the bicycle or in the tackle box when saltwater fishing:

WOAH! Frickin' SWEET! Is it just me or is the blade a little more "tip heavy" than the standard? It looks broader, which is a plus in my book. I just hope they release them in plain edge, too.

Oh--and their logo on the cord end is a nice touch. :D

Don't wait, looks like it's pre-order for this limited edition version. Interesting, but I'll stick with my traditional Opinels. Thanks for posting this though!

I doubt it's limited edition. Plastics molds are extremely expensive, so while the molded item is inexpensive to manufacture, you have to be planning to sell a crapload of them to offset the high up-front cost.

sorry to mod about the post - but the link was to the manufacturer, not a dealer? is that verboten as well? don't want to err on posting!

The dealers website didn't say Limited Edition, they said it's a new model and supplies could be short.
Estimated delivery time mid to late March 2012. VERY limited quantity available this spring - First come first serve -

Here's the manufacturer's website: http://www.opinel.com/

I just hope they release them in plain edge, too.
Same here. I'd also like to see a gift set so I don't have to order each color separately. :D

I'll probably wait until they are standard inventory items.

If that was the manufacturer, go ahead and restore the link. The website is ambiguous, though.

I think I'll stick with the traditional models unless they 1) lose the eagle claw hole 2) release in plain edge and 3) make them not so traditonal tactical cross over.

The hole allows for one-handed opening, and I wouldn't call them a tactical crossover. More modern camping/backpacking themed--think REI. Kelty, LMF, MSR, etc. That sort of style.

Well, lets hope someday they will make one without the serrations.

It would be nice to have an Opinel that doesn't swell and tighten up in the summer.

Or one handed SAK style. I like the new models. It would be nice to see that hole on their traditional knives as well. Maybe as an option.

You'd have to cut down some of the handle so that more of the blade is exposed. That might be a reasonable mod to do yourself.

The No8 outdoor is not going anywhere, it is not a limited edition. However, the quantities available on the first "spring" run are very limited.
Look like the orange #001577 will be the winner...

As far as we know their are no plans to release a plain edge blade. Since this is a brand new model for Opinel it would not be surprising if they have several variants in mind.
We will keep you posted if we hear anything.

I'm sure it'll depend on how well the initial ones do--and I imagine it'll be very well indeed!

Looking at international and US wholesale pre-orders the No8 outdoor look like a winner, no surprise here.
Several buyers from large retail chains have ordered the knife without even asking for a sample. On the retail side (pre-orders that is) they are flying so fast we may have to limit the purchase/pre-order to one per ship address and actually enforce it until we can have a study supply.
