new Outdoor Opinel

I wish Cognet would respond to emails. A distributor of mine has been trying to contact them without any luck.

Nah--looking to carry Douk Douks in the shop, but I haven't had luck finding a distributor and the company itself won't even get back to me. :(

Thanks--I'm willing to bet it won't be any time soon, if I do. So many irons in the fire. Such a tangled web. It is a web full of flaming irons. And mixed metaphors. :D

I think the whistle is an excellent idea, if it's loud enough. "Signaling device" is one of the Ten Essentials for outdoor travel, and I suspect it's the most overlooked.

Victorinox also had a model with a whistle built into the handle.

I doubt it's limited edition. Plastics molds are extremely expensive, so while the molded item is inexpensive to manufacture, you have to be planning to sell a crapload of them to offset the high up-front cost.

Just looked this up, holy crap!

"6. How much does a mold cost?
Again, varying greatly on complexity, quality, and size, a mold can cost anywhere from $2,000-$3,000 for a simple, single cavity mold, up to $60,000-$100,000 or more for a high production, multi- cavity mold made with hardened tool steel. Typically, the molds we build are in the $8,000 -$20,000 range."

Yeah--it takes a pair to take a step in that direction when you've been working in wood for over 100 years. :p

The Spyderco Assist also has a whistle built in. So I can pipe myself along as I stroll down the trail! :)

I'll be impressed when someone puts an ocarina in a knife handle. :p

Ok--just took a crappy, poorly lit webcam video showing how I one-hand my Opinel No.8 so click the image below to bask in its glory. :p

You'll notice I have an "easy open" notch in the handle on mine. It's handy for when moisture swells the joint up so you can pinch the blade open instead of breaking your fingernails. :D

Did I miss something? That just shows a guy opening an Opi over and over with two hands.

Really? Well, seen as though you are struggling to make the leap from exposing more of the blade (arguably the hardest part of one handed opening on such a knife) so that you have a larger surface upon which to apply thumb pressure for full opening....
