New Rules for the Exchange forum - Feedback thread.

Spark, would it be possible to move all locked X threads to a forum in the Archives where they could still be searched but out of the way of the active threads? ...Or maybe a new sub-forum inside the X for these threads??

I imagine it would have to be done manually, so it would be work. Not to mention you'd get a flood of "needs a move" reports on every single thread when something sells.

In my own private notes, I have a folder for Products, which are purchases I have on the way to me. When they arrive, I move them to another folder, Products Arrived.

But this is a lot of work for BF, searching out finalized sales threads and moving them manually. I don't know if it would automate easily.

In Edit Options in your User CP, there is a setting Number of Posts to Show Per Page. I have mine adjusted to the highest available now, 40. I would be happy with the forum default as high as 100.

Yah, my posts per page is set up already. What I meant was threads per page. That's not user adjustable. Say there's 25 threads per page in the X right now. So the 86th oldest thread is on page 4 right now. With say a 100 threads per page setting, that thread would still be on page one. Threads would be on page one and two 4 times longer and have more time to be noticed without reposting.

I'm guessing that there is no option in the vb software to allow the OP to move (only) his/her thread(s) to an archive sub-forum themselves when they are done with it, no?

No clue. Kinda doubt it, but I don't know much about this stuff.

We can't get people to mark threads SOLD or to close them.
I doubt they'll be moving them any time soon.

I have mine set to 40, also. However, this only applies to posts within a thread. The number of threads per page is set to 25 threads and this is what displays per sub-forum.

I still think that 2 weeks to be able to re-list the item is too long. It should be one week. In addition, any thread that has a reasonable price change should be allowed to be re-listed since this is actually a new thread by changing a material element in the offer to sell.

[...]I think that many members are not aware of the change and do not know that you can change the view to last post date rather than the original post date.
It may yet be changed, but I think it's a bit too early to consider cutting the repost time in half.

As for reposting with a new "reasonable" price... I disagree. Not even going into how much more difficult that would be to moderate, allowing that would just be an invitation for exploitation. If you want something to sell fast, you should price it appropriately. If you want to eek out every dollar possible, be prepared to sit on it for a bit.

But as you said yourself, it is very likely that many haven't even recognized the change yet. Others still are simply confused as to what exactly is going on. Personally, I think many of the stickies in The Exchange could stand some pruning, replacing and rewriting. Perhaps this change is even warranting of a global email spam?

This is correct.
And having a quick look at the vB admin manager, I don't see any way to increase this.

PS, sorry Esav! I think I even mailed you with that misinformation. :(

On top of that, we can't change the number on a per-forum basis, just site wide.

I dunno about threads per page, but I have my posts per page set to the minimum of 10 so that when I'm on BladeForums on my Blackberry it won't take so damn long to load :D

Well I'm realizing that in order to be able to read threads by last post like we used to be able to I have to click on that option at the bottom of the page every single time I click into a for sale forum. That is way too much hassle to do every time to be considered an equal alternative to the default. I will see how this new system plays out, but so far I don't like it because I can't get the updates to people's threads without going down and clicking show by last post. If there's a knife on page 3 that just had it's price updated, how do I know unless I read through 3 pages of thread titles? I generally just scroll through pages 1 and 2 like everyone else. There are knives I don't consider until the price comes down, and I suspect many others do the same. Sure, I could subscribe to all of these threads, but again, that's an added step--instead of just scrolling down the titles-- and then I have to go to the section that allows me to check subscription updates, or get a bunch of emails. I'm skeptical, but I'll see how it plays out for me a few more days, maybe I'll discover what others seem to like about it.

So far it seems that those in favor are the type that check the forum every few days. Since I'm on multiple times a day, that may be one reason I prefer the old method of sorting posts.

You don't need to scroll down. Right above the first thread (the "Attention!!!" sticky) it gives you options to sort by date, title, rating, views, etc. Just click on "Last Post" right above Ken's name and it'll sort 'em the way you want.

You could always use the subscribe tool and get instant email notification. That's exactly what it's there for.

That's partly what I was saying, I like to log onto the forum and read through the threads, not clog my personal inbox with emails from the forum.

You could subscribe without emails and just check your User CP regularly, which is what I do.

As has already been suggested, clicking 'Last Post' at the top of the page will save you the hassle of having to scroll down and make three clicks. Much less hassle involved there, but yes, still one less click and load than you would otherwise have to have done. Hey, think of it like this... on your first visit, you get to check out any new threads. After that, one click lets you check all the new bumps. :p

No matter what you do in this case, it's an added step.
Even under the old system, if you wanted to check for a price drop, you'd still have to wade through dozens of thread titles looking for the one you want... hourly? Daily? Weekly? That sounds like a lot of work to me. With the subscribe feature, five seconds and a few clicks will allow you to, as Ron Popeil would say, "set it and forget it."

You could subscribe without emails and just check your User CP regularly, which is what I do.
Yep.
User CP > List Subscriptions

One more quick suggestion for those who still prefer the 'by Last Reply' sort.
Another thing you can do is create a new Favorites link that retains all of these filter options. Less clicking is never a bad thing!

Here's an example,
The following URL will take you to the 'For Sale by Individual: Production' with the 'by Last Reply' sort enabled.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=746&order=desc&sort=lastpost

To make one of these Favorites links yourself, simply go to the subforum you want, click "Last Reply" at the top and save as a favorite.

It's only been a few days but so far doesn't look to bad to me.

A couple things i think come into play are.

#1 this is a bad time to make changes because at this time of year alot of folks try to unload knives to raise extra cash for the holidays.

#2 Although many are journeyman on the P.C. and these clicks are simple, that does not apply to all.

#3 Educating all member's....Big highlighted sticky's at the top of all forums with simple instructions might help.

Just thinking out loud folks...don't beat me to bad. :)

I'll be making an announcement shortly. I should have done that already.

EDIT: ANnouncement up.
