they had a show over here called 'last man standing', which i watched yesterday (it was unfortunately the last one in the series) on sky.
they had a number of survivors of the earlier shows wrestle in a local somali non-professional but deadly serious tourney, after two weeks training by a local coach. there were three in the heavy weight class that had to be whittled down to two, the favoured (largest) guy lost, but the winner hurt his knee & couldn't continue so the big guy wrestled the local along with the other heavy. the blonde haired blue eyed light weight won his bout against a local champ, all the others lost, the little guy won & became the 'last man standing'. he also was the one who had followed local pre-match rituals designed to placate the spirits, while the others either did not or did it pro-forma.
from the little they showed in the title sequence, they also had previously did stick fighting in another african tribal location, and other lesser known martial arts & sports, along with canoe racing the local papuans in dugouts in new guinea. i would have liked to have seen the other shows. they did not go for the well known martial arts like karate, kung fu, mui thai, etc. and thus were more interesting. they were all full contact, nobody from the locals were 'holding back' and a number of the contestants dropped out due to injury. maybe they'll replay it....
if they do these kind of shows, it must be true immersion learning - chuck them in the deep end & see if they can swim with the local sharks.
