New Southard is 'quiet'

aliexpress has a picture of their $59 "Spyderco Southard CF" taken apart. Zoom in on that photo. Google aliexpress + Southard.
My guess is that yours is this counterfeit copy.

Well Evilgreg, it seems that it is indeed a fake. The box you posted in your last pic was the EXACT same barcode number and everything. If that tells the deal. I've got an e-mail out to my buddy who got it for me for his input. The one thing I am noticing is that the blade in your fake pic looks a lot different than mine, my blade is stonewashed all over and has none of those striations in it like the pic you posted.
It sure sucks if my buddy paid full price for this and it's a fake.

A barcode is just an image. No big deal to copy the numbers or the bar symbols associated with them.

The bar code, numbers to the bar code, and model number/name/etc. are the same on my real Southards, but the letters and numbers over to the right (the LL and 1TQ01 on the image of the fake I posted) vary. If the letters and numbers to the right on yours are exactly the same, I'd be pretty suspicious . . .

Rycen, thanks for your succinct input--what put you in one camp or the other? And BTW Evilgreg, the other numbers are the same as well, still haven't heard from my bud who got this for me.

I'm planning on buying a brand new Southard myself in the near future from one of my fave reputable online dealers (GPK , KW , KC). I feel confident about these dealers having only genuine Spyderco Southards in stock.

Wow, that is the best fake I have seen. The cut out on the non locking side looks wrong on the know fake but that is the ONLY thing that stands out to me.

I noticed all of the fakes I've seen had an LL mfg date. Thanks Greg for the detailed info.

Didn't read the entire thread but I am 100% sure that is a fake... I also have a fake and that is identical. The pocket clip is very shiny, the lock side is not stone washed, the blade is not stonewashed well and markings are a slightly different brown and very light. Hope this helps if it was not solved already. If it helps I actually liked my fake better then my real one in hand but I still like to have both.

The couple of Spydercos I have also did not come with warranty cards only the edge u cation papers. All fakes on the bay have warranty cards.

Experience more than anything. I've been familiar with Spyderco for a very long time.

Pathetic, weak sauce..
Spyderco and everyone willing should contact Alliecoppiesalot .com (or whatever they call it) and ask them about their business ethics and whether or not they realize the majority of their customers are being lied to and let down.
Ebay won't get a dime from me either.

Aside from being a possible counterfeit, knives that use an internal stop pin typically don't have that "clack" sound/feeling when opening them.

Well it seems that this isn't going to be that simple. My friend assures me it's a real one, and he specifically had a CF scale made for it. He spoke with the guy he bought it from ($185 plus the new scale) and the guy told him he would give him his money back if he wanted. So I'm wondering, do I just send it to Spyderco and ask them what's up, or should I just send it back to my friend and have him get a refund? The knife actually works very well, looks fine and holds a good edge, I've done some light cutting with it only...soooo???

Sounds sketchy, take some better pictures can't really see anything in the ones you posted. I'd also talk to Spyderco Monday for peace of mind that would really suck if you friend paid all that money to some guy and your walking around with a fake.

Real have a plastic cage ad are blackish Fake are a metal cage and a copperish color..

As I am holding a fake in my hand right now. I am 99% sure that the one you posted pictures of is fake. But take yours apart and look at the bearings. If it is black, then gravy and I am wrong; if not, well yeah.

Wow...that's scary.

It begs the question, if someone that works at the Taichung factory possibly sold the CAD files to a company with the ability to make knock offs. This is much too advanced for a simple trial and error that we've seen with the Military, Para2, Native, and other counterfeit models.
