New Southard is 'quiet'

It begs the question, if someone that works at the Taichung factory possibly sold the CAD files to a company with the ability to make knock offs. This is much too advanced for a simple trial and error that we've seen with the Military, Para2, Native, and other counterfeit models.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's something like that, they are probably making the fakes in a factory across the street.

They just have to get a hold of a real one and create the CAD files based on that. The challenge then would be to match the finish. Hence, the fakes have a satin-finished blade, a difference in the stonewash, and different scale material.

My goodness. Just took a look a few threads regarding the fake southards.
My guess is that they got a hold of older CAD files otherwise we'd be seeing direct copies including scale pins/etc.

I don't know if Sal is following this thread I do know I see him pop up from time to time.

My question is what would it take to go after the people selling and importing? I know the Chinese don't give two craps about it so it would be what could be done here. This is really bad for everyone not just Spyderco.

So really what would it take? I guess I am talking about a dollar amount to lobby Washington. Specifically targeting the Importers here is there a solution at all?
When you see something that ships from China it's more obvious but making examples of those who ship from here by confiscating inventory, civil litigation etc

Sal mentioned in another thread that one of the larger companies that imports that crap is going to become publicly traded on the US stock exchange.

There was a special on I think CBS about the battle to stop the counterfeit products pouring in from China. It cost the US economy billions and is a constant battle for US customs. They pull aside and open up to inspect suspicious containers but there are just so many shipments arriving at our ports each day they can't catch everything. Most of this crap is hustled by side street vendors and to stop each one seems to be another endless endeavor. The only way to ever stop it would be to cut it off from the source but China doesn't do jack.

There are also plenty of sites out there selling replicas/fakes which seem to ship from sellers outside the US and for whatever reason people want to buy them. For those selling fakes as legitimate the only real way to avoid getting burned would be to buy from an authorized dealer. It might not be bad to keep your original receipt for proof if you decide to try and sell it later on...

Well one first step is buyer awareness and skepticism. I generally don't buy anything out of China if I know it's supposed to be made somewhere else(thus, no Spydie Millies from the US, Enduras from Japan, or Southards from Taiwan).

Sadly, there's no solution if the buyer knows it's a fake and buys it anyway.

Legislatively there might be a solution if you impose an import tax "penalty" on the company, the dealer, and all related affiliates if they ship copyrighted designs(the original company owning the copyright must file a complaint). Say send a letter to UPS/Fed Ex to stop shipping packages for that eBay dealer selling counterfeits, or pay a price.

Would work great in theory. Sadly, the average American voter doesn't seem to give two sh**s about this blatant bleeding out of American jobs, so I wouldn't expect any miracles in my lifetime(a bleak outlook indeed at age 26:thumbup:).
