New Spyderco ATR is exactly what I've been waiting for!

While I'm wishing... I also wish that Spyderco would start making handles held together with user-disassemblable torx screws, as in Benchmade knives. I know I know about "voiding warranties." Some users don't care and would just like access to their knife's parts.

This seems to be a common mistake people make. Spyderco DOES make knives that can be taken apart. In fact, all of their non-lockbacks can be taken apart. So that mean all linerlocks and compression locks, (and the new DoDo ball bearing lock?). That is a lot of knives that can be taken apart. I think they use all standard phillips screws, like on my LUM Chinese, so that you can easily feild strip the knife. How many people do you know who cary torx screwdrivers in their pockets? How many people do you know who carry a SAK or Leatherman with phillips though? Quite a bit.

Near as I can tell, there's the Salsa, right? Is that a compression-lock? I can't stand that knife, particularly because it says "SALSA" right on the side. Goofy. Little graphic of a pepper... Silly.
The Ti-Salsa is the one with the integral compression lock. It does not have a pepper on the side. The Aluminum compression lock(non integral) has a pepper.

By the way, what can y'all tell me about CPMS30V? Is it a stainless steel, or a tool steel like everyone's going gaga over lately?
This is a stainless steel. The best out there at the moment. It can hold an edge longer than almost all stainless steels, possibly with the exception of S90V, but S90V isn't used in production knives. It is also very rust resistant. Better than VG-10 or BG-42 from what I've heard.

I do not believe that aluminum has enough spring tension to use as a frame lock of any kind.

Microtech uses S90V on the LCC and SOCOM in some cases. And didn't Spyderco offer it on the Starmate for a while?

I bought an ATR from New Graham Knives the first day Mike had them available ($187). It is the most expensive knife in my collection for the moment, but the price didn't bother that much. Spyderco did a great job with this knife. It all fits well (perfect machining, etc.), great materials as other have said, it's awesome in the hand, light for its size, and I dig the design. If you want the best of a certain brand, it is going to cost you. Bottom line - I'm glad I could and did buy the ATR.

Thanks alot. You reminded me about Microtech's limeted edition runs of S90V. You also told me something I didn't know, that Spyderco offered S90V on the Starmate at some point. Thanks again for the info.
