NEW Spyderco released

This new kris blade Spydie is one of the few designs I don't like. :barf: It looks like someone tossed a more traditional Spyderco into a Dali painting.

Hmmm, I like it a lot. Then again I like the non-traditional looking folders. I like opening up a folder that looks different from the black handle, black blade, tactical stuff out there. I also loved the Kris bladed balisongs but could never afford them. With the Spyderco Kris I get a blade shape I like in a easy to carry package. Fine by me if more don't like it as it should be easier to get and then end up being a collector's item :)

Here's Spyderco's new framelock, but it hasn't been released yet..

That one looks like an early 80s station wagon. And the kris, that one is too ugly for words.

I wish Spyderco would 1) stop experimenting with crappy designs, 2) work on options with proven existing designs (like the ball-bearing lock for the Police for example) and 3) stop discontinuing promising designs (Ronin).

I'm not crazy about either new design.

However, the reason I chose to focus on Spyderco instead of Benchmade this year was because of the diversity in their lineup. There are a dozen different styles...when they do several three inch blades, they use radically different ergonomics, size, handle to blade ratios, etc.

Benchmade, in my opinion, makes a ton of realllly similar folders. And I love them.

So what I'm getting at is it's their weird diversity that seems to always ensure there's a Spyderco on my list. These two are not hits with me, but as long as Spyderco keeps being weird, they'll get some I really have to have.

I like the new Kris. I think it was designed by Ed Schempp. If it was designed by Ed it will be a pleasure to hold and use. His designs are very ergonomic.

Before dismissing a design you should at least hold it. Or even better use one. I've surprised myself by doing this. ;)

@ warden41272

N690 is an austrian made steel by http://www.bohler-bleche.com/ (site is in german)

Comp.: C 1,07; Si 0,40; Mn 0,40; Cr 17,0; Mo 1,10; V 0,10; Co 1,50

DIN: 1.4528

I have a BM Monochrome in N690 as EDC and I think it's pretty comparable to VG10 which has also some Cobalt in it.

Cheers

Hannes

I have a custom kris by Ed Schempp--on which this production design was paritally based. You may or may not like a kris blade, but this one is a reall slicer, and I know that the Spyderco will do just about as well. As to the aesthetics, to each his (or her) own, but I can tell you that this design fits very nicely into my hand, and in a way that is a natural postion for a working knife. The ergonomics are superb. This is what you would expect in a design by a guy who like to slice free-hanging manila ropes and such.

I don't think Spyderco has a framelock in their current lineup. I assume you are talking about the ATR with an integral compression lock?

Spyderco Kerambit is a framelock.

Me too, but for girlfriends, not knives. :D

Ok, ok, point taken :). I forgot about the Volpe and I admit I forgot (how could I :( ) the wonderful little Cricket. However, the Karambit has, AFAIK, been discontinued (it is at least not listed in the 2006 catalog) and hence is NOT in the current line up. (Where is that little smily that sticks out its tong, when you need it :))

I'll join in to say I like the kris blade too. Years ago I thought wavy blades were dumb, but now I like them. I will probably get one of these.

Ugly! Looks like someone left it in the oven too long. I wonder how much work it would be to straighten out that edge (top and bottom)?

I think they both have potential.

If that frame lock ends up looking in the flesh like the picture implies, it'll be on the get list.

I like the kris blade and if this knife fits the hand anything like the original persian from spyderco I think it will be a hit.

The blade is too crooked and too straight for my taste. I like the blade to be more inline with the handle, hence the blade is too crooked for me. I like more ripples in a kriss-style blades so it is too straight for me. This is more the kriss-style that I like to see:

Awesome design in my opinion. Bravo to Mr. Schempp and the Spyderco crew for bringing such an interesting and historical design to creation. IMHO it's the most interesting folder being brought to the market in '06 regardless of manufacturer. If it's anything like my Persian and mini-Persian it's ergonomics will be great and it'll cut like a demon.

I'll be getting one shortly.

Well my beloved wife has one purchased for me as a Valentine's Day gift. After I use it for a while I'll post a review. I knew I married her for a good reason. :D

I can't wait. This blade is definitely intriguing me. It looks like the handle will lock into your hand for a very secure grip. And the blade design, what more can I say but awesome grinds!
