New Survivorman begins Fri November 7, 2008

I really enjoyed this episode tonight. My favorite so far.

One thing though; why use the payute trap in that situation, what is wrong with the figure 4?

I was wondering the same thing, seems like a waste of what little cordage you have. I was pretty impressed that the main vertical piece in his 'failed' trap stayed in place enough to catch and hold the rock, too!

I wondered the same thing. Seems a figure four would be the way to go.

Ok so I am not alone on the trap thing.

J your not alone on the mirror either. That was great that we now know what the airial units are seeing while we are flashing.

There was alot of good info in that one!

It would have been neat to see more from the SAR units point of view, IE what goes into planning the mission etc. Like if they would have made it an extra hour long since it was the new season premere.

I laughed when les was talking about not running and jumping around *cough*Bear*cough*............

This was one of my favorite episodes.

Yeah Bear would of leaped across the deepest part of the stream and climbed a tree to signal the chopper!

Sorry for you guys north of the boarder, I hope we don't spoil it for you.

On a different note.

In what situation would a Paiute trap be best?

When you're trapping Paiutes, of course. :D

That link refers to his book. Two days ago, in Indigo book store, I saw the book. Nothing really new in it, but I thought it was pretty well done - a lot better than some of the others.

Damn, there's 3 of us. Good one, though, jw!

Here's a link, GS. And another one.

Doc

Sorry, GS, I misunderstood your question. The link I referred to was the one posted by d_filgate. At the bottom of the page, it mentions his book. The link again. (from the bottom of the page: "Stroud, who has a background as a producer of music videos, has released a book called Survive! Essential Skills and Tactics to Get You Out of Anywhere — Alive!")

I liked the fact that in this episode he had "hiking" gear. Seeing survival from the minimalist point of view is fine, but, sometimes it's nice to see what would happen if you had a backpack with some goodies.

They say that a signal mirror on a clear day can be seen 20 miles.
I think I read a while back that the farthest documented signalling for a rescue was 100 miles. That is just incredible.
I keep one in my pack, for sure.

Hindsight is 20/20, but, in the situation he was in (lost hiker) once he got fire, he probably could have grabbed some of those live evergreen branches and made some signal fires. Live Pine needles make thick smoke.

I'd like to see these shows stop and do specific episodes, one on variosu traps and trapping methods, one on orieteering and finding your way, another on fire starting.
I say this because in many scenarios, there are several possible ways to deal with them.
nice to know your options.

Every show, I find myself thinking (which is a rarity for me) what else is an option?

I agree, it was one of the better shows. I think being in North America it hits home with many us a little more than a tropical island or a barren polar cap.
