I just printed it yesterday and it already has two kills.

The One, True “Bugout Killer” is a paper clip in MacGyver’s hands.

My Mini is a regular rider in my pocket and I’ve yet to see anything that could replace it.

Where does the Delica stand in this battle? A bit smaller ,but 4 way pocket clip, about 30 % cheaper, similar weight.
Not at all similar to a bugout so I didn't mention it. But it's far more cutting horsepower in a little smaller package. That thin blade on the delica just sails through stuff.

Im surprised Civivi,or some other similar brands didnt come out with a rival for the bugout. Most of their offerings have steel liners.

The Bugout cost me $1000s of dollars. Hadn’t bought a knife since my large regular Sebenza in 2008. Bought the Bugout on impulse at a knife store around 2018 and it got me back into knives… bad. Now I have a mess of Shiros, CRKs, CPKs TRCs… I don’t even have that damn Bugout anymore 🤦‍♂️

That's usually how it works, right? 🤣 I've managed to refrain from new purchases since before Christmas but I'm waiting on my Hawk stuff to ship right now.

I think the Bugout is a fine knife and I bought one right after they came out and enjoyed it. It's a very pocketable, useful design and I think the design brief (at least as I understood it) for an ultralight utility folder was pretty unusual for a big name manufacturer back then.

That said, I ended up selling mine because I simply preferred my 940-1 for that role and liked it's construction and materials more. I do get a kick out of seeing all the customizations that are possible now. It's really remarkable the creativity and variation out there with all of the aftermarket parts available for the Bugout.

I think that reasonable people can disagree on whether it is priced fairly or if it fulfills its intended role well. I think it's a little overpriced but it doesn't bother me much. I buy most of my knives used anyways.

Here's the thing though, if someone is looking for a very lightweight utility-type folder for ultralight backpacking or survival or whatever I think there is a better option that is readily available: the Spyderco Salt 2. It has basically the same blade length and (crucially, I guess) weight. It also has a backlock, which seems more robust and reliable than an Axis lock, with no omega springs to fail. It also has either H1/H2 or LC200N steel which won't match S30V's wear resistance but will significantly exceed its toughness. For me, this is significant, since I can run it with a more acute edge if I want, I can worry less about chips or fractures, plus it's easy to sharpen in the field, unlike S30V. Finally, it's completely rust proof, which seems like another huge advantage and if you drop it, the bright coloured scales will help you find it.

If a non knife person asked me to recommend a folder to fulfill the stated purpose of the Bugout, I think the Salt 2 is a better choice. However, the Bugout is still a good choice and we are lucky to have so many choices on the market right now.

The Bugout has a thinner blade than some delicas and the same thickness as others. I can’t think of anything that is better about the delica, aside from the price.

i love benchmade.. bugout beat itself by being way overpriced for what it is... several "bugout killers" out there based on price point alone... its like buying a 35i bmw...
