New ZT0550 Thread !!!

Here is what Kershaw's customer service department just told me:

-- ALL 195 of the ZT 0551s in the first batch are being recalled.

"This is the first time in five years we've recalled a product," Kershaw's rep said.

-- Only two dealers have the affected knives: Kershaw Guy and Blue Ridge. Kershaw says it has called both dealers to notify them of the recall.

-- The recall does NOT affect the remaining 805 of the 1,000 limited edition 0551s -- because they have yet to be built.

-- What happened? Kershaw says a batch of liners didn't go through the final finishing process -- a tumbling process that smoothes the steel to remove and prevent corroision.

Without the process, corroison is the inevitable result, the rep said. Thus the rust that clearly shows up in the photos posted earlier in this thread.

-- The company said it was unable to determine which serial numbers were affected so it recalled the entire batch of 195.

-- "The guy who did it got let go on Monday," the rep said. The ZT line is made at the company's plant in Oregon by six employees; now there are five.

A personal note: Thanks and a tip of the hat to those posters here who brought this to light and a special thanks to those who posted photos of the rust.

You enabled all of us -- and Kershaw, IMO -- to find out what the problem is, and hopefully to deal with it.

I hope this report helps.

Okay, so I have spent a half an hour trying to read through all of this and see what the hell is going on, and I can't devote any more time to it. I got serial number 125 I think from kershaw guy. Sounds like I should send mine back. Is there anything else that I need to worry about or is this all current info?

It sounds like I should be worried about the liner non-finishing/rust or future potential rust issue and perhaps the lockup issue.

Since this shows my ignorance and is not even something that I was cognizant of, it probably won't matter, but will someone please explain to me what the "lockup" issue is? What does it mean to have 50% lockup. I have a good hunch, but I don't have the knife with me and I want to be sure, so please explain it to me like the idiot that I am.

Since you have so little faith in Kershaw it sounds like you just need to return your knife and get your money back because it doesn't sound like you will ever be happy. That or run down to your local knife store and hand pick your knife.

I only asked a simple VALID question and there's only one person who can answer it and he hasn't, so where do you get off "doubting my faith" in Kershaw??? You don't have a vested interest in this (that I can tell) yet you choose to attack/question me for simply voicing my concerns? Nice. I'll just chalk that up to... __________________.

Hmmm,Two different answers?

I looked inside with a flashlight & it all looks fine.No discoloration,No signs of rust.Like I said earlier, mine has NO flaws previously reported.Even the G10 & liners are matched up perfectly. In fact,I've never gotten a production knife this frikkin perfect before & believe me I'm picky(downright anal about certain things!:D).
I don't see any reason to send it in.Especially now right before Christmas, the mail is over burdened & slow enough. If I decide to sell it one day(which I can't ever foresee happening),I'll send it in to Kershaw for a once over first.

I'm just saying you can't truly know unless you take the liner off. The rust/patina/whatever is sporadic so I wouldn't trust anything other than taking the liner off...

On the other stuff, I think that's part of production knives. You could get one perfect while it's neighbor might not be so great! I'm glad you're happy with yours, I'm happy with mine!

Don't worry about the lock. If it locks up solid, you're good.

Use this number if you want to send it back if anything for the piece of mind if you want?

Just PM or call. I get your point but at this point it's cyber bullying Thomas almost and no one wants it done like that.

The silence from Kershaw and its dealers is deafening.

Time for you to speak up.

Great pics Jroden!^

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

let's see some more pics and stories of hard use like the man requested, remember the title of this thread? I don't like the direction this thread has taken, If you still find the need to bring up QC issue start your own threads

Okay.....no more discussions of the issues with the knife. I want to see more pictures of the knife in use and comparison shots to your other knifes to compare size. Post away.:D

Thank you for the great pics, sir! At least somebody is posting some.

I'm picking mine up tonight and I cannot wait.

I think that Kershaw has already done what they need to do to correct this situation. If your knife has a problem, they will fix it. But, we already knew they would take care of their customers from the beginning. Isn't that why we love Kershaw? Well, that and all the sweet knives they make.

Thank you Thomas, Rick, and Dave!

just talked to ZT. sending it back, hate to but i want it Right.... customer service rep was very helpful. sending ups label.. one more thing, will they adjust the lockbar? mine was about 60%. which was fine. would like it to be about 30-40% though.....

+1:thumbup::cool:

Mine has none of the 'flaws' previously reported.I couldn't be happier with it.:)

Question:
Were the rusty liners visible without taking it apart?

Yes.

Its a pretty "wide" knife and you can see all the way to the PB washers clearly. It was also visible at the butt of the knife and became my reason for taking it apart. It was at that time I found the extent of the rust.

I'm not really worried about it though, I mean yeah it sucks to send it back but that's the whole reason I bought a ZT right? warranty? I wanted a knife that had the best of everything and got it, were getting royal treatment on this so personally I'm very satisfied.
