New ZT0550 Thread !!!

Stainless steel just 'stains less' than carbon steel. I've had several knives with various stainless steels develop rust on the liners, spacers, screws, or blades after putting them away wet or something like that. It's not because they're junk or something, it's because ALL steel will rust under the right conditions (even H1, although I heard it took someone dumping their knife in a bucket of powdered bleach or chlorine for a week or something like that to do it).

Anyone, I don't see the point in all this bickering. Reps from Kershaw have admitted that something went wrong in the manufacturing process and are doing all they can to correct it. It's a bummer that something went wrong in the first place, but at this point what more can you ask the company to do?

For all those that missed it, someone posted earlier that there has been a FACTORY RECALL on this first batch and the few distributors (Kershawguy & Blue Ridge) that received them should return them back to ZT/Kershaw.

I love how the apologists/fanboys suggest that we should just clean them up ourselves and get on with it and just be happy/thankful(!) that we got a knife in the first place! You gotta love blind loyalty like that, but here's something to consider...

MY PRIMARY CONCERN IS/WAS FROM THE BEGINNING...

These liners are supposed to be STAINLESS STEEL and shouldn't be rusty like that in the first place! Even if you "clean them up" what f'ing assurance do you have that they won't be rusting again?! If there was this kind of OVERSIGHT to have "missed" putting the liners in a tumbler why can't it also be a valid concern that whoever pulled a sheet of steel to cut the liner blanks out of didn't get the wrong piece of metal??? ..what if they received the wrong spec alloy from their supplier and nobody caught it or did anything about it????

I would like Thomas to chime in on this and set the record straight.

Stainless = stain less not stain proof. Most stainless steel can easily develop surface rust if it has a rough finish and subject to a humid environment. Is Thomas saying it is stainless enough or does it require a lab analysis? He couldn't possibly know if they were sent the wrong steel.

Since you have so little faith in Kershaw it sounds like you just need to return your knife and get your money back because it doesn't sound like you will ever be happy. That or run down to your local knife store and hand pick your knife.

And once again, I'd like to thank Rick for his design, Thomas for his professionalism and for being here for us, and Dave for getting these in to our hands so quickly. My hat off to the three of you.

+1:thumbup::cool:

Mine has none of the 'flaws' previously reported.I couldn't be happier with it.:)

Question:
Were the rusty liners visible without taking it apart?

I wanted to wait and see more pics before deciding on this knife. Wish I hadn't now, this thing looks awesome. If you have recieved yours put up more pics so we can see this thing. I would love to see it compared to some of the other ZT knives to get a feel for size. If you don't have any other ZT knives put it next to whatever knives you have in your collection. Looks like this one is going to be the top knife on my 2011 wish list.

At this point one of the biggest problems is with the new owners. Some of whom are unwilling to part with their shiny new knives, and may not discover hidden defects for months or even years. At which point they may well try to unload their rust buckets on unwary buyers (i.e., folks like us.)

KERSHAW HAS RECALLED ALL 0551s MADE TO DATE. THERE IS NO REASON NOT TO SEND YOURS IN.

Hidden defects. Rust buckets. Unwary buyers. All caps.

Really? All of your posts indicate your harsh loathing towards this knife, yet you don't mention even having one of the knives in your possession--why are you so emotionally involved?

You even got your questions answered by Kershaw on the phone.

If you're so concerned about getting a "defected knife," then just ask for the serial number when it's on BFC.

Your input really isn't appreciated.

I made it clear earlier that we are talking about a liner and NOT some kind of uber premium high carbon stainless tool steel. I would only expect a liner like this to be made out of a cheap/easily sourced Austenitic i.e. 300 series Stainless alloy and the very reason for their existence in the first place is CORROSION RESISTANCE!

If you guys are experiencing rust on the non blade parts of your knives then shame on the manufacturers for spec'ing such poor grades of STAINLESS steel! And for the record, I'm fully aware of the differences in these alloys and their various propensities for corrosion AND the difference between "less" and "proof". NONE of my Benchmades or CRKs have ever given me problems, even in coastal environments!

Question:

Yes.

Shining a flashlight at the G10 side liner showed my discoloration.

No, not in my opinion.

Hmmm,Two different answers?

I looked inside with a flashlight & it all looks fine.No discoloration,No signs of rust.Like I said earlier, mine has NO flaws previously reported.Even the G10 & liners are matched up perfectly. In fact,I've never gotten a production knife this frikkin perfect before & believe me I'm picky(downright anal about certain things!:D).
I don't see any reason to send it in.Especially now right before Christmas, the mail is over burdened & slow enough. If I decide to sell it one day(which I can't ever foresee happening),I'll send it in to Kershaw for a once over first.

Just got home and wiped the blade down with a little WD40, good as new, here's some glam shots

My knife is en route to me now. It will soon be on its way back, sad to say.

Loathing?

That's what you call shelling out $200 for a product none of us had yet seen?

My interest is solely in protecting consumers -- and that includes you.

If you don't appreciate that, I guess I'll just have to live with that.
